ST.

COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH

SAN DIEGO

November 6, 2016
Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners:
This week our nation celebrates Veterans Day in which we are
invited to pause and offer thoughts and prayers of gratitude for
the many men and women, past and present, who have served
our nation in the Armed Services. In 1999, while speaking to a
gathering of Military Chaplains, Pope John Paul II offered the
following reflection regarding the good that these men and
women accomplish: In democratic societies there is a growing
conviction that the Armed Forces are called to be instruments of
peace and harmony among peoples and of support for the
weakest. In this regard, how can we forget the numerous
missions in which the Armed Forces were on the front lines in
offering their generous help to peoples struck by natural
calamities or humanitarian tragedies? How can we not admire
the dangers and sacrifices that are faced by those who carry out
peace-keeping missions in countries destroyed by senseless civil
wars? With these interventions, the Armed Forces gain more and
more credit as defenders of inalienable human values such as
life, freedom, law and justice. This conception of military life is
in harmony with the Gospel message that offers many pastoral
opportunities for the Military Ordinariate Church.
Beginning with the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls, the month
of November has traditionally been a time in the Church when
we are encouraged to remember and give thanks for the holy
men and women who have gone before us as well as pray for our
departed loved ones who still await the fullness of the Kingdom
of God. With this in mind, I would like to share with you a brief
passage from a reflection by Pope John Paul II in 1998. The
Holy Father wrote: The prayers of intercession and petition
which the Church never ceases to raise to God have great value.
They are "characteristic of a heart attuned to God's
mercy" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2635). The Lord
always lets himself be moved by his children's supplications, for
he is the God of the living. During the Eucharist, through the
general intercessions and the Memento for the dead, the
assembled community presents to the Father of all mercies those
who have died, so that through the trial of purgatory they will be
purified, if necessary and attain eternal joy. In entrusting them to
the Lord we recognize our solidarity with them and share in their
salvation in this wondrous mystery of the communion of saints.
The Church believes that the souls detained in purgatory "are
helped by the prayers of the faithful and most of all by the
acceptable sacrifice of tile altar" (Council of Trent, Decree on
Purgatory), as well as by "alms and other works of
piety" (Eugene IV, Bull Laetanturcoeli). "In fact, that same
holiness, which is derived simply from their participation in the
Church's holiness, represents their first and fundamental
contribution to the holiness of the Church herself, which is the
'communion of saints'" (Christifideleslaici, n. 17). I therefore
encourage Catholics to pray fervently for the dead, for their
family members and for all our brothers and sisters who have
died, that they may obtain the remission of the punishments due
to their sins and may hear the Lord's call: "Come, O my dear
soul to eternal repose in the arms of my goodness, which has
prepared eternal delights for you".
Finally, it is not too late to start thinking about Thanksgiving and
I hope you will plan on starting your Thanksgiving holiday by
joining us to offer the greatest prayer of gratitude we have, the
Eucharist. Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 9:00 a.m.
Fr. Ed

Recyclables
What are you doing with your plastic bottles and
aluminum cans? The Youth Group has been
collecting them to help fund their Confirmation
retreats and their attendance at Steubenville. This
is an ongoing fundraiser and has helped send youth
who would not otherwise be able to attend to
experience either of these very important events.
You can help easily by dropping off your plastic
bottles and aluminum cans at the storage container
in the gravel parking lot. The youth sort and bag
the recyclables each Sunday and an adult volunteer
transports them to the recycling center. Thank your
for your continued support.

NOVEMBER 6, 2016

Tuesday, November 8 is Election Day. St.

Columba Parish Hall is an official polling
site. Dont forget to go out and vote!

A Prayer for our Nation as We

Prepare to Elect our Leaders
O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord,
Not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.
We thank you for the privilege
Of being able to organize ourselves politically
And of knowing that political loyalty
Does not have to mean disloyalty to you.
We thank you for your law,
Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged
And recognized as higher than any human law.
We thank you for the opportunity that this election
year puts before us,
To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote,
But to influence countless others to vote,
And to vote correctly.
Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened.
Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,
Their response to you requires that they be politically
active.
Awaken your people to know that they are
not called to be a sect fleeing the world
But rather a community of faith renewing the world.
Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in
prayer
Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth;
That the same eyes that read your Word
Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot,
And that they do not cease to be Christians
When they enter the voting booth.
Awaken your people to a commitment to justice
To the sanctity of marriage and the family,
To the dignity of each individual human life,
And to the truth that human rights begin when human
lives begin,
And not one moment later.
Lord, we rejoice today
That we are citizens of your kingdom.
May that make us all the more committed to being
faithful citizens on earth.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
