Session One

1. Boanopstekkor Hello Dance (Shenanigans CD, Vol.I)

Dance once saying hello and waving (walk CW 16 beats, CCW 16 beats, in 3 steps and
wave, out 3 steps 2X, clap 4X, stamp 4X, clap 4X, stamp 4X)
Repeat using different languages for greeting and gestures. We used:
Salaam, Xin Chao, Hola!, Salve, Malo-a-leilei, Shalom


2. Twiddle-um, twaddle-um, twenty-one,
Tell me where do you come from?

Pat-clap-side-clap 2x (say and do)


Say rhyme with clapping pattern
Say where youre from, repeat, putting your answer on another beat
stretch it out for 8 beats (2 clapping patterns)

3. My name is... (a fun clapping game from Sofia Lopez-Ibor)

teach clapping pattern first: say and do, whisper and do, then just actions
explore different codes eg. addition (4,6 =10), multiplication, subtraction, colours
(red&blue=purple)

everyone tries their name all together and then individually around the circle
try with a partner, the second time repeating your partners name

magic partners
move around the room to drum, and repeat with new partners, making sure never to have
the same partner twice


4. Partner interview

with your final partner, return to the circle and learn things about each other. Then around
the circle, introduce your partner and tell something about them



5. Everyone Born in January Skip Around singing game from Trinidad

(same melody as There Were Three Jolly Fishermen.)

chant the months while patting a steady beat. When your birthday month comes, clap its
rhythm and then go back to patting the beat. (We listened a few times to determine the
patterns: no birthdays in June, lots in August, March
circle dance/game: everyone walks CCW around circle, while anyone

with a birthday in the called month skips around the inside of the circle in the

opposite direction

on "tra-la-la-la-la-la-la" outside circle stops, faces centre: pat-pat clap clap clap 2X

person(s) whose birthday it is can join others with same birthday to do the body
percussion

on last Everyone born in January walk towards center 4 steps and then walk back 4 steps
sing one more time, skip around and find all the people in your birthday month ending with a
connected shape
move with group into circle in correct order of months
short piece with your birthday group expressing something about that month, using holidays,
songs associated with the month, weather, etc. Begin and end with the name of the month
perform using voice and movement



Session Two

1. Gankogui two-tone bell from Ghana

parade into a circle, walking on the low sound, jumping on the high sound
discussion about the gankogui, how many different sounds it makes


Opening: Wel-come-welcome back today, welcome, lets sing and dance and then well play!
Clapping rhythms, by themselves, together intwo lines!

Whose Turn?
The Circle does the pattern, then says their name over four beats-(we echo)
pattern-then choose a new person

Each partner has the length of the pattern to tell each other what they did over the weekend
Back in circle share with everyone what your partner did (lots of haircuts this weekend!)

8. Lulu Game - a true story (see handout)
After playing the game we discussed various ways to help children match pitch.

In the Lulu Game, it helps to take away their sense of sight, put the tuning fork right
ear, and sing along with them. If they cannot match pitch you could:


*Have them sing whooo ee as high as they can with the whole class. If
they are able to use their head voice, have them sing the Lulu song on any

high pitch that they can.


*Play Paolas elevator game: holding both hands with the teacher, make the
elevator go up and down with your voices

*Ask them to use their Mickey Mouse voice

lo sa and all stop. Blindfolded person calls out Tonio and chosen person answers Tonio followed by
Claretta and chosen person answers Claretta.
Blindfolded person guesses who is Tonio and Claretta.

2. Doggie, Doggie game (in supplemental materials)

Doggie Doggie where's your bone? Someone stole it from your home.

Wee Willie Winkie runs through the town, upstairs and downstairs, in his nightgown

6. Second Story Window Gamesit in groups and make a list of all the nursery rhymes you know
An old campfire game, we used it to recall the many traditional chants and rhymes that we know.
Players from each team would say a rhyme, ending with

And throw it out the window.

1. Body Percussion warm up

Review of 3-5-7-9
We practiced Dougs canon (3377 517 51 931) and tried it after 33 and then after 3377, and also
after the first 1

Different people took turns sitting in the middle to listen to the different cross rhythms that come
out



7. Categorizing words by syllables

we made 4 categories and listed birds with 1 syllable, 2 syllables, 3 syllables and 4 syllables


8. Birds of a Feather

Birds of a feather, flock together
Birds of a feather, flock together.
In sunshine in rain-time whatever the weather,

experiment with different ways to say the poem everyone chose duple
we underlined the beats and notated the rhythm
We tried different ways of saying the poem in compound until it sounded the most natural, and
emphasized the meaning of the poem.
We underlined the beats and notated the rhythm in compound meter

Groups make up an ostinati-perform it with our poem Birds of a Feather
