MUS 150 Lesson Plan

April 3, 2016
Middle School Choir Lesson Plan Wed, 4/6/16 (lab day)
1. Objectives:
a) Students will analyze selected measures of their choral music and notate the
rhythms correctly using the "Rhythm application of the Chrome Music Lab.
b) Students will determine the note names of the tonic chord of each given piece in
order to determine which notes are do, mi, and sol using the Chords
application of the Chrome Music Lab.
c) Students will determine where every do, mi, and sol appears in the pieces and
mark them by writing the syllable above the note.
2. Procedure Part 1: Rhythm
a) Teacher open chrome music lab on projector screen and instruct students on
how to locate it (google chrome music lab).
b) Teacher will demonstrate the Rhythm application and give students 5 minutes
to try it out. After trial time, teacher will write measure numbers and their
corresponding time signatures from the pieces to be analyzed on the board and
have students notate them in the app.
i. Students will have 2 minutes to notate one measure after which the
teacher will come around and listen to individuals notation (correcting as
needed). Repeat with next 3 excerpts.
3. Procedure Part 2: Major triads (do, mi, sol)
a) Teacher will demonstrate the Chords application and give students 2 minutes
to try it out. After trial time, teacher will write Tonic Chords and their
corresponding piece names (2 pieces) on the board. Students will then find the
chords in the application and write the note names on the top of their music.
i. Students will have 4 minutes to find the names of the notes in the tonic
triads and write them on their pieces after which the teacher will come
around and check for accuracy (correcting as needed).

b) Teacher will review solfege syllables and remind students that the tonic triad
notes are do, mi, and so. Students will then have 10 minutes to go through the 2
pieces and label every do, mi, and sol.
i. Teacher will go around the room to make sure everyone has labeled their
music. Teacher will then go over music one page at a time and ask the
class as a whole to recite the measure numbers and beats where each do,
mi, or sol lie.
4. Assessment
a) Students grade for the day will be based on teacher observations during the
class:
i. Did the student pay attention and stay on task with the software (30%)
ii. Did the student accurately notate the rhythms assigned (25%)
iii. Did the student name the triad notes accurately (20%)
iv. Did the student label their music and actively participate in reciting of do,
mi, and sol (25%)
