Requirements For Insulation Material
Part 2
Glass Fibre Products,
Double-Woven Glass Cloth
SCOPE
This NES defines the technical requirements for the double-woven glass cloth for overwrapping
thermal insulation in HM Surface Ships and Submarines.

MATERIAL
a. The yarn is to be of continuous filament Type E low-alkali glass complying with BS 3396
Part 1.
b. The yarn for both the warp and weft of the fabric is to be spun yarn with a construction of EC 9
136Z x 2S.

MANUFACTURE
Cloth
The cloth is to be double equal plain cloth stitched together by both warp and weft yarns and repeated
over 24 ends and 24 picks; the yarns are to be as specified in Section 2 and have 142 warp ends and 142
wefts picks per 10cm. A tolerance of 2.5% for both ends and picks is permitted.

Weight
The weight of the cloth is to be 800 10%g/m2 excluding the finishing treatment. The
weight is to be determined by the method described in BS 3396 Part 1 App C.

Length
The cloth is to be supplied in rolls of 50 meters nominal length, but lengths up to 60
meters will be acceptable.

Selvedge
The cloth is to be uniformly woven. The selvedges are to be either fully woven or
tucked feather, well made, substantially straight and even, and are to have the same
tension as the remainder of the cloth. A plain feather selvedge is not acceptable.

Finish
The woven cloth is to be given a finishing treatment that locks the weave so that the
amount of loose fiber released when the material is cut is reduced to the minimum.
The amount of weave locking is not to be so great as to seriously affect the handling
and draping qualities necessary to ensure the satisfactory use of the fabric as a
covering for insulation blankets. The finishing treatment is to be compatible with the
vapor barriers/coatings as specified in NES 703 and NES 805 Part 1.

Breaking Strength Test

The average breaking strength is to be determined as described in BS 3396 Part 1 App
D and is to be not less than 95kN/m or 4.75kN per 5cm width (equivalent to 95kN per
meter width) in both the weft and warp directions.

Packaging
a. The cloth is to be rolled tightly and evenly on to rigid tubes to produce a firm
package and to prevent collapsing or telescoping during transit or storage.
b. Both ends of the roll are to be suitably protected to prevent damage to selvedges of
the cloth.
c. Each roll is to be individually wrapped in a suitable, robust, moisture-proof
wrapping (NOT PVC film) and securely packaged in a carton.
d. A printed label bearing the following information is to be affixed to each carton.
