Welcome to Drill & Blast Africa 2014

Dear Executive
Future economic growth on most of the African continent is based on mining forecasts and investment is pouring into this
sector. As a result, mines have to ensure efficient operations to remain productive and to meet the current and future demand
from global markets.
Mine houses on the continent are spending millions of dollars on explosives and drilling equipment as well as consultants to help
increase drill and blast efficiency. Error free drilling and blasting operations are important as they ensure the sustainability and
profitability of mining operations, and affect all downstream processes.
Our in-depth research has indicated that mines in the region are operating on a trial and error basis which is ineffective and
unproductive. It is important for drill and blast professionals to explore and share new ways and technology to optimise
drilling and blasting operations to increase efficiency and productivity thus positively impacting company bottom line.
IQPC is proud to announce Drill & Blast 2014 taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 20 21 October 2014. The

10.30 How We Increased Production From Targeted

9Mt To 10.8Mtof Final Product, Through Using
Effective Drilling And Blasting Procedures And
Downstream Processes
The success of the 3 year old Kolomela mine has been
beyond the expectation of Kumba Iron Ore. The mines
production was almost 2Mt above target for the year
ended 2013 and is on track to produce the targeted
10Mt for the year ended 2014 with figures already
indicating 2.5Mt produced in the first quarter. Mining is
done by conventional open pit mining and the
innovative drilling and blasting have formed an
important part of the production process. Presplitting,
precision in drilling pattern design as well as efficient
blast analysis have increased blasting accuracy at
the mine and improved fragmentation by more than
double. Hear about the success of Kolomela mine and
see what practical processes you too can implement
at your mine.

CASE STUDY

Wolter De Graaf, Blasting Consultant and Senior

Lecturer, University of Pretoria, South Africa

Magalakwena, the largest open pit platinum mine in

the world is targeted to produce 400koz of platinum a
year by 2017, a 100koz increase from the current
300koz produced. The first quarter of 2014 has
already recorded a 3% increase in production due to
efficient mining procedures and the maintaining of a
low operating cost per ton milled. Innovative drilling
and blasting techniques have contributed to the mines
success as have effective fragmentation analysis
procedures. The use of larger boosters for blast
operations in particular has proved to be efficient and
cost effective for the mine as will be highlighted in this
presentation.

The Target Mark Through Exploring New Ways Of
Conducting Drilling And Blasting At A Mine With
An Approaching Its Lifespan
Skorpion Zinc mine in the 8th largest zinc mine in the
world and has managed to maintain a production
target of 1.6 Mt of zinc per month. This has been not
easy as the mine is approaching the end of its life
span, while drilling and blasting has to occur
continuously. Skorpion zinc works with streamline
processes where multiple cost effective tasks are
completed before the whole drilling and blasting
process has occurred. Ore is continually sampled after
drilling to ensure that the blasted material is of the
required grade. Site specific drilling designs and
loading plans have been developed for the site to
ensure it remains competitive in its remaining years.
This presentation will give more insight into the stream
line procedures at Skorpion Zinc Mine.

09.10 What Not To Do When Transporting Explosives
On Mine Roads Outcomes Of A Recent
Examination
A blaster and his assistant were instantly killed, when
their vehicle exploded on a mine road, while
transporting explosives in an approved pick-up truck
and explosive box. At first, everyone believed that the
cause of the accident was directly related to mixing
high explosives and detonators in the same
compartment of the explosive box. But, the
contributing factors to the accident surprised
everyone. This presentation goes through the detailed
investigative and forensic processes by reconstructing
the damaged vehicle and explosive box, including
performing full scale simulation tests to duplicate the
accident. A video of the site immediately following the
accident will conclude with a complete set of
recommendations to eliminate similar accidents from
occurring in the future.
Frank Chiappetta, Explosives Applications Engineer,
Blasting Analysis International, United States of
America

Located in Botswana, Phoenix Nickel Mine has the

challenge of conducting drilling and blasting while
situated in an unstable environment. Blasting has to
occur with the threat of boulders rolling back into the
mining pit. Electric programmable detonators are being
used to counter this and to reduce vibrations through
controlling timing delays.
Mpho Poster, Acting Drill & Blast Engineer, Aveng
Moolmans - Phoenix Nickel Mine, Botswana
14.30 Afternoon Refreshments and Networking Break
15.00 Close-in Blasting to Protect a Multi-Billion Dollar
Bio-Tech Process
Blasting Analysis International (BAI) was commissioned
by a large pharmaceutical company overseas to
assure that blasting did not damage a number of very
close-in facilities and structures, which housed a multibillion dollar bio-tech process. Once activated, the
bio-tech process could not be disrupted or shut down
during the blasting period. The project involved
removing a large hard-rock outcrop area for
expansion, which was approximately 15 20m high,
and spanned an area of approximately 100m by
330m. Over 125 carefully controlled and continually
modified blasts were required to complete the project
safely and successfully.

10.00 Morning Refreshments and Networking Break

10.30 Poorly Drilled Blast Sites Result In Substandard
Outcome, Poor Fragmentation And Ultimately
Lost Production Get Your Drilling Right
Getting your drilling right is of paramount importance
as this affects the blast and fragmentation, rippling to
downstream processes. Human error is often sited as
the reason why drilling becomes inaccurate and
impact negatively on mine production. In this session
you will get more information on:
Matching drilling pattern to rock type
Factors to consider when deciding on drill rig fleets
to suit the mining geometry
Common angle errors and how to ensure they are
avoided
How to drill the correct depth for rock material
Strategies employed in ensuring correct drilling in
areas where drilling quality and measurement is
difficult
Examples from past experiences will be shared as well
as recommendations on what could have been done
to ensure correct drilling.
Kevin Landley, Blast Hole Drilling Consultant, Anglo
American Technical Solutions, South Africa

This presentation will include how to develop a

sure-proof method of assuring no damage to the
sensitive facilities, analysis of the test procedures used
to develop safe vibration levels and blast designs,
methods to monitor and evaluate small test shots, how
to develop continually changing custom blast designs
and delegates will view selected video clips of the
close-in blasting

Workshop B- 21 October 2014

Time: 17: 00 PM 20: 00 PM

Optimising Your Drill and Blast Strategy

Presplitting and Highwall Controls

(12 Rules) which Guarantee Results
100% of the Time

Workshop Description:
The introduction of precise electronic detonators has dramatically
changed the way we do blast designs. Initially electronic detonators
were introduced as a specialty application to control ground
vibrations, air blast and fly rock. But today, the primary application
of electronic detonators is in substantially improving fragmentation,
increasing the plant/leach pad throughput, and minimising system
cost. Very small changes in the blast design, with the use of
electronic detonators, can achieve substantial improvements.
Workshop Outline:
Necessary requirements to satisfy the fragmentation distributions
for processing plants
Stem charge and air deck blasting theories: applications and
example calculations
Determining the optimum hole, row and deck delays to increase
fragmentation, casting and to minimise ore dilution
Outlining problems with single hole signature analysis for
vibration predictions, and how to handle this effectively
Understanding blast design influence on the total mining
system costs
Combining electronic detonators with stem charge, air decks,
very short (1-3ms) hole delays, and very long (100-300ms) row
delays to increase drill patterns 8-15%, without affecting
fragmentation

Workshop Description:
Twelve cardinal rules have been developed to guarantee excellent
presplit results in medium to large diameter holes. The success of
this technique relies not only on the presplit design, but also on the
blasting sequence and in protecting the presplit charges.
Workshop Outline:
Presplitting theory and calculations
Types of rocks which can and cannot presplit
Blast design details (powder factors, spacing, charge placement
in hole, subgrade, buffer hole offset and delay timing
Mass blasting. This allows the presplit, buffer holes and all of the
production holes to be fired in one blast without damaging the
highwall, regardless of the size of the production blast
