Andrea Gutierrez has been
awarded a Fulbright-Nehru grant
for research in India in 2017. She

Badger Girls and Boys State
band concert
On Tuesday, November 15, the
Kohler Band Department will
present its Fall Band Concert. The
concert, which features the concert band, symphony band, and
jazz ensemble, will begin at 7:30
p.m. in the Kohler Memorial Theatre.
The program will feature music
selections sure to please everyone. The middle school concert
band will be performing Spirit of
an Eagle, a piece of music from
the Renaissance called Gates
of Destiny, and an exciting new
overture called Pentagram. The

high school symphony band will

perform a new fanfare called
Beyond the Ridge by Chris Ozley, Suncrest March by Wisconsin composer Rick Kirby, and a
transcription of Aaron Coplands
Appalachian Spring. The jazz ensemble will conclude the concert
with Gibsons I Cant Stop Lovin
You, and Maynard Fergusons version of Gonna Fly Now from the
hit movie Rocky.
The bands are directed by Richard Tengowski. The concert is
free and open to the public.

Orchestra
The Kohler band department
is proud to announce that Clara
Montes was selected to perform
with the 2016 Wisconsin School
Music Association High School
State Honors Orchestra. Lily
Montes was also selected to perform with the 2016 Wisconsin
School Music Association Middle School State Honors Orchestra. Both girls went through a rigorous audition process last spring
and both girls were selected as
one of the top violin players at
both the middle and high school
level in the state.

The 90-piece middle and high

school honors orchestras met in
Madison on October 26-27 for a
series of all-day rehearsals. Performances were in conjunction
with the Wisconsin State Music
Conference. When asked about
the performance, Clara stated,

Girls and Boys State programs.
Criteria for selection included
leadership, scholarship, service,
and participation in school activities.
The Delegate selected for Badger Girls State which is held on
the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Campus in June is: Lauren
Horth, daughter of Robert and
Tina Horth.
Badger Girls State is a week of
learning about local, county and
state government. American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State
is not a recreational or sports program. Citizens are divided into
two political partiesthe Federalists and Nationalists. They develop their own party platforms
and formulate their own issues.
Citizens learn by doing as they

function on city, county and state

levels by electing officials in the
manner prescribed by regular
election procedures and conducting business on those levels.
Every girl is encouraged to participate in some level of the governmental process.

Badger Boys State on the Ripon

American Legion Auxiliary sponsor these programs to foster an
understanding of American government. Students from throughout the state learn the principles

STATE OF EDUCATION ADDRESS
At the WASDA Fall Conference, State Superintendent Dr. Tony Evers delivered his final
address after a lifetime of service in education.
Dr. Evers thanked education leaders and the
school communities for their commitment to
educating all children. All across the state, he
sees innovation and a drive for excellence,
including at Kohler Schools. This is especially
impressive to see in our current education
reality, where there increasing political and
economic complexity. His address brought to
bear a truth: When one public school district
achieves, all districts rise. When one public
school district fails, all districts fall.
Dr. Evers foreshadowed priorities of the 201719 state budget request he will submit to the
governor this fall. He touched on the importance of:
1. providing resources to students that reflect
the need to increase equity and close
achievement gaps
2. providing mental health resources
3. building the teacher workforce to be both
well trained and compensated
4. paying for schools in ways that avoids
mounting inequalities
Dr. Evers specifically identified the need to
provide funding support to 3 student groups:
students with disabilities, students who are
English Language Learners, and students in
poverty. These students are important members of every school system, and especially at
Kohler Schools. We are proud of narrowing the
achievement gap for our students and of the
Department of Public Educations recognition
of the Elementary School as a Title I School of
Distinction.

New Family Breakfast

KSF hosted a new family breakfast. It was very
well attended, and very well organized. I had
9 parents join me on a school tour, which was
wonderful to be able to have that extra time
with some of our new families and have them
get to see our whole school community and
what a school day looks like here in Kohler.
Open House
On Monday, Sept 19th we had our Open
House. We had a new format this year, and received much feedback about it. We will gather
the Open House Task Force to meet to review
the feedback. We are excited to create a new
Open House format for next year, where we
will not be tied to the Middle School and High
School and can create an event that meets the
needs of parents, students and staff.
E-Newsletter feedback
Feedback is very positive. Constant Contact
gives us data as to the open rate and click
rates of each link, so over time, we can see
which articles are of most interest to parents
and tailor our communication around subjects
of most interest and of most help to them.
Safety Patrol
We are excited about our new Kohler Elementary Safety Patrol. We have 28 students
divided into 4 teams. We will use a rotating
schedule. Students will be on duty one week
each month. This program is supporting peer
leadership as well as school safety, and I was
please to see so many 4th and 5th graders
show an interest in the Safety Patrol program.
Coffee with the Principal-- Oct. 4 from 8:159:15 at the Woodlake Market Atrium. I am
looking forward to the opportunity to visit with
parents about important issues surrounding the
elementary school.
Elementary Principals Convention
I am very excited to be attending the Elementary Principals convention on October 12-14
being held at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart
Lake. The keynote speaker is Dr. Saphier who
will be discussing how to dramatically reduce
the achievement gap. Dr. Saphier has written
8 books about student achievement, so I am
excited to learn from him, and I am hoping to
meet some Elementary Principals from around
the state to form a nice network of principals
from which to learn.
MS-HS Principal Report (Timothy Brown)
I can only hope to explain how pleased we
are with the beginning of the 2016-17 school
year. We have had many exciting changes,
developments and accolades. I am looking

Through our e-Newsletter, the structural changes to Sneak Peek and Open House, as well as
Coffee with the Principal, we have instituted
procedures that lead towards increased transparency, communication and access. Furthermore, we have looked at our communications
from a user lens. Our Sneak Peek focuses
now on the student and their transition to both
middle and high school. Open House has a
focus towards the parent by exploring both the
academics and counseling services we offer
students, while Coffee with the Principal allows
a personal touch and insider view of that which
we are doing inside our schools. September
focus was Professional Development, and our
October focus will be School-Life Balance. All
of these initiatives stem from of the Strategic
Communication recommendations from 2016.
Professional Development
We are pleased to partner with CESA 7 in
developing a staff professional development
that focuses on the whole student. Over the
next year we will be breaking down academic
standards in all content areas as well as begin
to address future skills into the classroom, with
a focus on transfer of knowledge between the
curriculum. Along with academics we are also
focusing on social and emotional health of our
staff. We are partnering with Growing Minds to
work with our staff on Mindfulness. Concentrating on all aspects of our staff development will
lead to improved health of our entire learning
community and school life balance.
2016 College Board School of Merit:
We are one of 425 districts in the United States
and Canada to earn this 2016 award. This
award is a district-wide award that recognizes
our entire learning community for our efforts in
promoting high academic and social standards.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist
Recognition
Angela Schmitt, daughter of Bryan and Jill
Schmitt, and Nathan Waniorek, son of Lyle and
Judy, have been named 2017 National Merit
Scholarship Semi-finalists by qualifying on the
Preliminary SAT Qualifying Test.
Angela and Nathan are two of nearly 16,000
Semifinalists representing less than one-percent of U.S. high school seniors in the
nation. Angela and Nathan will continue in the
competition for the National Merit Scholarships
offered in the coming spring.

Brown and Lorne and Shannon Schlecht, and

Luke Silvestri, son of Scott and Amy, have
been named 2017 Commended Students in the
National Merit Scholarship Program
Elise and Luke are two students that scored
in the top five percent of more than 1.6 million
students who entered the 2017 competition. While Elise and Luke will not continue in
the competition, Elise and Luke are certainly
exceptionally academically talented students.

Review of District Finances
The Finance Committee reviewed enrollment, staffing, and the 2016-17 budget in the
9/21/2016 Finance Committee meeting.Administration has been monitoring all budget
variables that have occurred since the Board
approved the preliminary 2016-17 budget
on6/20/2016. No material changes have
occurred and the School District will have a
balanced budget for the 2016-17 school year.
TheDepartment of Public Instruction (DPI) will
release final revenue limit values and state aid
calculations on10/15/2016and these items will
be includedin the final 2016-17 budget which
will be reviewed and approved at the annual
meeting on10/24/2016.

Brush Pick-up
The Village crew picks up brush and tree branches that can be run through a chipper on Tuesdays.
The material must be in 4-foot lengths, maximum
of 6-inch diameter and piled neatly at the curb. No
thorny material or material with root balls is allowed.
Thorny material, root balls and all loose material
must go in the yard waste cart. Brush Pick up will
end on November 8th.
Leaf Collection
Leaf collection will start on October 3rd and continue
until December 2nd. Leaves should be raked into the
street along the curb in a three-foot (3) wide rows.
No grass clippings, sticks, or other garden debris
is allowed. The Public Works Department follows a
schedule for leaf collection. Each week, the collection starts on the south end of the Village where the
trees are more mature and produce more leaves. The
route continues to the west and north sections of the
Village. During the last part of October and early
part of November we may only be able to get through
the Village once a week due to the heavy leaf fall.

Fall Yard Waste

Yard waste must be put into the carts with the green
lid. On October 25th and November 1st , yard waste
may be put into additional containers after the cart is
full for these two special pickup weeks.

Illicit Discharges into the Storm Sewer

An illicit discharge would be the dumping of any
chemical, pet waste or hazardous substance into the
street or a storm basin inlet. The substance would
eventually make its way into the Sheboygan River
causing a pollution hazard. To report an illicit discharge, please call the Public Works office at 4593881.

Gunlocks
With gun deer hunting season right around the
corner, the Kohler Police Department is reminding
all those with firearms to use caution when handling firearms. Also, the Kohler Police Department
continues to supply Masterlock trigger locks for all
residents that want one. One free gunlock can be
obtained from the police department just by stopping
in. For those who have already obtained one in 2016,
another can be obtained starting in 2017. In addition to the Masterlock trigger locks provided by the
Kohler Police Department, a federal program, Project Childsafe continues to have locks available at the
police department, while supplies last. These locks
are the cable lock variety and anyone may request up
to three of those for their guns too.
