So without further ado, lets get started in making 2015
the year you build your coaching empire.

1. Differentiate between end goals


and meansgoals.
One of the key aspects to creating your coaching
empire is to differentiate between end goals and
meansgoals.
An end goal is the bigger picture.
They are about the end result of beinghuman.
An end goal could look like traveling the world, being
in love, doing what you adore every day, contributing
to society in a big way,etc.

In other words, this has a lot more to do with what you


want out of life before youre no longer here.
Means goals are more like social constructs.
Means goals are those benchmarks society has told us
we need to hit in order to achieve the happiness
weseek.
Examples include getting into the right school, work
ing for a particularly company, having a certain amount
of money in the bank or living in a certainplace.
At this point in your personal development journey you
can probably think of a few examples in your life where
you confused a means goal for an endgoal.

Getting into your desired school and realizing


maybe college isnt for you afterall.
Getting into that company youve been dreaming
about since you were a child, only to realize that you
want the freedom to travel the world and you cant
have it while youre working nine tofive.
Creating business goals that seemed like the next
logical step for making money, but hating every
moment of it because your heart wanted to create
somethingelse.
When building your coaching empire youll want to
make sure youre focusing on end goals instead of
meansgoals.
At this point you may be asking yourself:

Furthermore, if you ask yourself questions based on
these three categories than you can ensure youre cre
ating end goals instead of meansgoals.
Below youll find each category explained in more
detail.
What do I want to experience out oflife?
What do you really want to do in thislife?
What would you do if time and money were not
hinderances?
Its common for people to confuse experiences with
means goals like money so we want to clarify
something.

Money is important to a degree. While we dont


measure ourselves according to money, there are many
experiences we can have because ofmoney.
So in this case experiencing world travel may be the
end goal. But in order to get there youll need a certain
amount of money, which is the meansgoal.
When it comes to building your coaching empire, trav
eling the world to speak may be the end goal. And once
again, you would need money in order to make it hap
pen, making money the meansgoal.
With that being said, dont answer this question with
resources in mind. The truth is you can figure out the
money if you really want to. Or, perhaps you win the
experience.

tion that you have unlimited resources.


How do I want togrow?
What are the various ways you want to be a more creative
humanbeing?
What books do you want toread?
What skills would you want tolearn?
What kind of character traits do you want to embody?
How do you want to perceive the world around you?
When it comes to building your coaching empire, per
haps there are certain skills or techniques youd like
tolearn.

For example, maybe youre a health coach and would


like to grow by undergoing yoga teacher training.
You know that this training will not only improve your
skills so you can help your clients, but it will also
expand your awareness and help you grow spiritually.
What do I want to contribute to the planet?
This is where you make a list of ways you want to con
tribute and give back to theworld.
What do you want to change in theworld?
Who do you want tohelp?
What are some ways you can contribute in your local
community?
Again, the contribution doesnt have to involve money.

It also doesnt have to be something largescale.


Even small contributions make a big difference in
making the world a slightly betterplace.
In regard to your coaching empire, how do you want
your coaching to contribute to the world and make it a
better place? What does that look and feellike?

2. Create your personal mission

nessgoals.
This is certainly necessary, but we would like to
encourage you to take it a step further.
Put your coaching practice aside for a second and ask
yourself what is your personal mission statement?

Not your companys mission statement.


Not the mission of your coaching formula.
Your personal statement.
The reason this is so important is because most people
do not take the time to examine the underlying reasons
for their behavior.
In other words, you may find yourself setting goals for
your coaching empire but you may not be clear as to
why you even want thosegoals.
If youre not clear on the why of it all, then you may
create goals that are out of alignment with your values.
It may also be more difficult to keep going when things
gettough.

By getting clear on your personal mission statement,


youll be able to identify the Big Why behind all of
your actions from private coaching sessions to cre
ating your next offering.
Furthermore, when you build your coaching empire
based on your Big Why it becomes more personal.
For example, a wealth coachs Big Why may be that
they themselves struggled with lack and they saw how
much it negatively affected every area of theirlife.
As such, they want to help as many people as possible
avoid being negatively affected by money so they can
build wealth and improve their ownlives.
A wealth coach knows that if they help others build
their own wealth, then that money can circulate within
the economy, their clients can take care of their fami

lies and they can give more money to charities they


careabout.
So essentially, building a coaching empire to a wealth
coach is a lot more about helping the world rather than
just hitting the next income goal.
Their personal mission statement may read I want to
build my coaching empire so that I can help people
improve their finances and provide for their families.
Another great example is that of a health coach.
Their Big Why could be that they witnessed family
members lose a battle with poor health and they saw
how it affected everyone around them.
So to a health coach, building a coaching empire could
look like coaching people to better health so they can
be around their loved ones longer.

Again, its not about building your coaching empire for


the sake ofit.
Its also not about typical business goals (though they
have theirplace).
Its about getting clear on why youve decided to build
your empire to beginwith.
This is where you will find the juice that motivatesyou.
If youre unclear as to how to create your mission
statement, consider asking yourself some of the fol
lowing questions:
How do you want to be remembered?
What legacy do you want to leave behind?

What do youvalue?
How would you de ne success?
By beginning with these questions youre doing what
Stephen R. Covey, author of 7 Habits of Highly Effec
tive People calls beginning with the end inmind.
In other words, youre thinking about the bigger
picture.
Youre not just focused on one aspect of building your
coaching empire, such as hitting a certain income goal
in the first quarter of2015.
Instead, youre focused on the overall mission of your
life and the vision that fuels your coaching empire.

It is from this place that you can begin to create goals that
will skyrocket your coaching business.

3. How do you want to feel


in2015?

Asking someone how they want to feel at any given


year may seem irrelevant to building your coaching
empire.
In fact, its the exact opposite of what traditional busi
ness advice would have youdo.
However, we are coaches here, and as coaches we know
the importance of looking at our goals from a holistic
perspective.
So really take the time to think about how you want to
feel in your business and then begin creating your goals
fromthere.
For instance, one feeling that often comes to mind
when thinking about business is abundant.
We have to be careful here though.

Its easy to fall back into the rigid business goal kind
of thinking that may cause you to forget about your
personal mission statement.
For example, if youre thinking rigidly, feeling
abundant in your business may look like any of the
following:
Doubling your monthly sales by the end of theyear
Creating an offering that doesnt require you to be
present such as an on-demand course.
Not working 80 hour weeks and still being able to
pay yourbills
Paying your bills period.
Starting to build yourteam

Again, all of these goals have theirplace.


Were not at all trying to say that more rigid business
goals are inherentlybad.
Its just that sometimes we put more rigid business
goals before our own personal desires and it can lead
to problems.
However, if youre remembering to keep your Big
Why in mind feeling abundant could looklike:
Being able to give money to causes you really care
about thanks to the proceeds you make in your
coaching practice
Waking up everyday to do what youlove
Being able to attract the support you need to reach

Being of service to your highest capacity
Of course, what abundance looks like to each indi
vidual willvary.
There is no right way of doingthis.
The key, however, is to get in touch with your own
feelings and your desires and begin building your goals
from thatspace.
Unfortunately, getting in touch with our own personal
desires is something that we havent been taught to
value as a society.
As such, dont be surprised if you happen to find your
self automatically gravitating toward more rigid busi

One of the most difficult things you may find about


building your coaching empire is taking your big dream
and putting it into smaller steps.
At this point it becomes easy for coaches to completely
overwhelm themselves.
After all, up until this point youve been doing all this
work to think big by creating personal mission state
ments, getting in touch with your desires and deter
mining your endgoals.
This is some major and necessarywork.
Now you need to determine what you can do in 2015

that will move you in the direction of your dreams.


You must remember that you dont need to build your
entire empire in oneyear.
You also dont have to achieve all of your big picture
dreams in oneyear.
In reality building your coaching empire a lifelong
process that will expand as you grow and experience
new things.
Besides, achieving big things is done in smallsteps.

suggests picking only five things to accomplish in
oneyear.
If this seems like a daunting task consider some of the

What are the key themes for your coaching empire
thisyear?
What goals would put a smile on yourface?
What would you be disappointed to not achieve

Notice how these questions always go back to how you
ultimately want tofeel.
Alternately, these questions focus on what would give
you the most fulfillment.

certain achievements.
Those are what we previously described as
meansgoals.
Instead, your five goals for the year are just smaller
steps in reaching your overall endgoals.

5. Create systems to hold yourself

As a coach, its likely that you hold your clients


accountable, make sure they check on their progress,
and help them refocus if its necessary.
Ironically, coaches dont always do the same for
themselves and this can be detrimental as they try to
build your coaching empire.
You already know that lacking these support systems
can lead to less than stellar results for your clients, so
why not take your own advice?
First, youll need to set up some sort of accountabil
ity system throughout theyear.

As a coach you already know the value of coaching, so


perhaps youll want to hire your own coach to hold you
accountable.
However, there are other options.
For instance, perhaps one of your coaching colleagues
will agree to check in with you periodically to make

Or, maybe a friend or a family member canhelp.
The point is to make sure youve built some sort of a
system in place to hold yourself accountable.
Just because its your job to hold other people accountable
doesnt mean you dont need some help yourself.

other people doesnt mean they dont need to see their


own doctor.
Second, youll want to schedule times throughout
the year where you can review your progress.
Theres a reason why people say what gets measured
gets improved.
Its because itstrue.
Granted, were not talking about measuring how much
money you made or how many new social media sub
scribers youhave.
Were talking about measuring your progress toward
your endgoals.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself to mea
sure your progress:

Up until this point have you done what you can to move
in the direction of your dreams?
If not, what can you do to refocus? What support sys
tems will help you achieve your endgoals?
Have your values changed? (This can happen. Values
arent always set in stone.) If so, do you need to reexamine somegoals?
How often you decide to check on your progress is up
toyou.
Perhaps this is something you and your accountability
partner can determine together.
Or, perhaps you come up with some other cycle that
works best foryou.

For example, in the previously mentioned ICF article,


the author measures her progress annually, quarterly
and monthly.
That may seem excessive to you or it may seem
justright.
It all depends on how much accountability you think
