Rationale:
The Need
We recognize that the Staff Handbook is a lengthy catalogue containing a lot of
information. A clear, concise summary of conduct-related policies was needed. To that
end, we have written a summary of some of the most salient points. Most organizations
call this a Code of Conduct. You’ll find that most of the summary paragraphs point to
the full policy. There are a few new items: non-fraternization, personal business, and
substance abuse are added. And one of the items points to a new document, the
Theology of Human Sexuality. This document will be rolled out later in the year.
In our effort to summarize the Handbook, we found that the document felt heavy, and
rule-oriented. That’s why we added the preamble of the Code of Conduct, which
emphasizes InterVarsity’s posture of grace toward all.
Why are we doing this?
• To clarify and simplify a very complex Staff Handbook. This distills the conduct-
related policies in the Staff Handbook to 2 pages.
• To clarify the theological foundations of our standards of conduct which are grounded
in a Christian view of humankind, and of our relationship with God and with our
neighbor.
• To articulate InterVarsity’s policies so that our organization can stand with integrity in
a changing legal landscape.
