FranoisRude(4January17843November1855)wasaFrenchsculptor.HewasthestepfatherofPaulCabet,
asculptor.
BorninDijon,heworkedathisfather'stradeasastovemakertilltheageofsixteen,butreceivedtrainingin
drawingfromFranoisDevosges,[1]wherehelearnedthatastrong,simplecontourwasaninvaluableingredient
intheplasticarts.[2]In1809hewenttoParisfromtheDijonschoolofart,andbecameapupilofPierre
Cartellier,obtainingtheGrandPrixdeRomein1812.AfterthesecondrestorationoftheBourbonsheretiredto
Brussels,where,probablyowingtotheinterventionoftheexiledJacquesLouisDavid[3]hegotsomeworkunder
thearchitectCharlesVanderStraeten,whoemployedhimtoexecuteninebasreliefsinthepalaceofTervuren,
nowdestroyed.
AtBrusselsRudemarriedthepainterSophieFremiet,daughterofaBonapartistcompatriottowhomhehad
manyobligations,butgladlyavailedhimselfofanopportunitytoreturntoParis,wherein1827astatueofthe
VirginforStGervaisandaMercuryfasteninghisSandals(nowintheMuseduLouvre)obtainedmuch
attention.
Hisgreatsuccessdates,however,from1833,whenhereceivedthecrossoftheLegionofHonourforhisstatue
ofaNeapolitanFisherBoyplayingwithaTortoise(nowintheLouvre),whichalsoprocuredforhimthe
importantcommissionforallthesculpturalfriezeornamentandonegroupontheArcdeTriomphe,inParis.This
group,Dpartdesvolontairesde1792(DepartureoftheVolunteersof1792),alsoknownasLaMarseillaise,a
workfullofenergyandfire,immortalizesthenameofRude.

AmongotherproductionsareNapoleonAwakeningtoImmortality(Mused'Orsay,Paris),thestatueofthemathematicianGaspardMonge(1848),
Jeanned'Arc,inthegardensoftheLuxembourg(1852),aCalvaryinbronzeforthehighaltarofStVincentdePaul(1855),aswellasHebeandthe
EagleofJupiter(MusedesBeauxArts,Dijon),LoveTriumphantandChristontheCross,allofwhichappearedattheParisSalonof1857afterhis
death.
AnimportantpupilofRudewasJeanBaptisteCarpeaux,whosubsequentlyexecutedhisowninterpretationofaNeapolitanFisherBoy,apopular
subjectatthetime).

TheMuseRude,Dijon,inauguratedin1947,isdevotedtoplastercastsofhisworksthatwereacquiredbythecityofDijon,between1887and1910it
ishousedinthetranseptofthe11thcenturychurchofSaintEtienneinrueVaillant.[4]
