Realistic Fiction
PARENTS Book reports are HOMEWORK. Reading and writing the report are done at
home and turned in on the due date. One day late 50% of earned credit. After that
0% NO EXCEPTIONS! Students are given 6 weeks to complete this book report and
VISUAL AIDE (for oral presentation), so begin right away!
DONT wait until last minute!

1. Students, choose a realistic fiction book from school library, classroom library or
home. (Must be approved by teacher) by November 8th
2. Read, Read, Read
3. Take notes as you read and keep the paper in your book. This is your prewriting
4. When book is finished hand-write DOUBLE-SPACE your book report. Include the
information below:
Paragraph 1 Introduce characters and describe them. Example:
In the book _________________, Samantha is a creative and inquisitive girl who
lives in Smalltown. Her sister, Sally likes to investigate. They solve mysteries with their 3
friends Jack, Mary and Stanley. Sometimes their science teacher, Mr. Smith, helps them.
Paragraph 2-4 Beginning, Middle and End. Develop the plot so that your reader will
understand what the book is about. Each paragraph should include a topic sentences, 3-5
supporting sentences and a concluding or transition sentence.
Paragraph 5 Opinion paragraph. Answer the following questions: Did you like the book?
Why or why not (2-3 sentences for the why)? Would you recommend the book to your
friends (or what type of person would like this book)?
VISUAL AID due December 6th
Student will do oral presentations of their book report (December 7-9). A visual aid is part
of that presentation. On the website are ideas for these visual aids. This is not an
exclusive list. Be creative. Research ideas. Or students may do a poster board if they
wish. Needs to include: characters, setting, plot (bullet points) and hand-made
pictures/designs that go with the book. PLEASE DO NOT PRINT PICTURES FROM THE
INTERNET.
GRADING
On the back is a Rubric that explains the grading process.
Written report is worth 100 points
Visual Aid is worth 50.
