Steamdrum
Earlierthedrumofboilerswereusedtobemadefromrivetingmethod,butnowwithadvancementinthe
weldingtechnology,drumsaremadewithwelding.Andallthistypeofworkisdoneinguidanceof
differentclassificationssocietyandtheweldedpiecearetestedfortheirstrengthbyusingvarioustests.
Thewholemakingofsteamdrumemployedusingfourplatesnamely:twodishedendplates,athickwall
tubeplate(thickertoaccommodatethedrilledholesforinsertingtubes)andcompletedwithathinner
wrapperplate.Nowinordertoweldallplatestogetherweusetheweldingmethodtoaccomplishthe
same.Sinceweknowthatweneedtocarryputtestsontheplatesinordertoseetesttheirstrength,during
weldingsometestsplatesarealsoweldedlongitudinally.Thisinturnhelpsustomeasurethestrengthof
theweldedjoint.Generallyweshouldhavethestrengthoftheweldedparttobemorethentheparent
metal.Allthistypeofweldingdoesnotinvolvehumaneffortandonlysuestheautomaticmachineto
accomplishthesame.
Generallywedonondestructivetestingsuchasxrayphotographyandthisgivestheresultregarding
theworthinessoftheweld.Ifanyfaultcomesinthewaythenitisrectifiedassoonaspossible.
Inordertotesttheboileragainsttheleakage,weusethehydraulictestingandbythisweareableto
checkanytypeofleakageoccurringinthesteamdrum.Thespaceabovethewaterlineactsasreserve
steamspaceneededtomaintainplantstabilityandhelpsinseparationofthesteamandwateremulsions
formedinthewaterwallsandthegeneratingtubes.Itisusualthatwaterwillbegettingcarriedawayin
thesteam,soinordertoseparatethesamewehavetheperforatedsteamplatewhichseparatesthewater
fromsteam.

Waterdrum
Waterdrumactsasthemainstoragehouseofthewaterandthewholewaterfromthedowncomerscome
tothisonly.Butthesizeofthewaterdrumdependsuponthegeneratingtubesandthedowncomers.
Waterdrumsalsoactsastheplatformwherethecorrosions,wastematerialsettledownandtheyareblow
downfromhereonly.Butnowinsomemodernboilers,thewaterdrumisreplacedwiththedowncomers
only.

Headers
Ifweseetheworkingofheaders,thenwewontfindanydifferencebetweentheworkingofwaterdrum
andtheheaders.Yesbuttheydoworkingonasmallscale.Thatisthereasonwhyinsomemodern
boilers,theheadershavereplacedthewaterdrum.Thesameofthesecanbeinsquare,roundetc.

Generatingtubes
Thesetubesarethemaintubethatcomeincontactofthefluegasesandtransmitsheattothewater.
Althoughtheyarenotfoundinthemodernboilersastheyhavereplacedbytheeconomizertubes,but
stilltheyareusedinmanyboilers.

ScreentubesandWaterwalltubes
Screentubesarealsolikegeneratingtubes,buttheyhavemuchmorediameter.Themainpurposeof
usingthescreentubesistoprotectthesuperheatertubesfromunwantedheat.Thereasonforthisisthat
steamlatentheatofvaporizationisverypooranditcannottakemoreheatawayasthisisalreadyasteam
only.

Inordertoincreasetheinsulationofboilers,weusethewaterwalltubes.Inwaterwalltubes,waterflows
andtakesawaytheheatsurroundingit.Thustheheatinsidetheboilerdoesnotgettransmittedtothe
outsideoftheboiler.Theseareofthreedesignsnamely:watercooledwithrefractorycoveredstudded
tubesClosepitchedexposedtubesandmembraneWall.

DowncomersandRisertubes
Downcomersarethepipesthatfunctionsasthesupplyingwaterfromsteamdrumtothewaterdream.As
namesuggeststhewaterfromthesteamdrumreachesthewaterdrumwiththehelpofthesepipes
only.

Thesetubesreturnsteamfromthetopwaterwallheaderstothesteamdrum.

Superheatertubes
Superheatertubesasnamesuggestsaresuedtogeneratesteamofsuperheatedquality.Generallytheyare
protectedbyscreentubes.Thereasonforthishasbeenshownwiththeyellowcolorabove.
