Gardens of the Sea: Coral Reefs

If you look at a globe, you can see that more than two-thirds of
Tubelike animals
the Earth's surface is underwater. Many sea animals make their
homes in this water. Some of the smallest sea animals help
form coral reefs. Coral reefs are formed by tiny tubelike
animals that are less than 1/2 inch across. As each tiny coral
animal dies, its skeleton gets left behind. Other coral animals
attach themselves to these skeletons. In this way, over time, the
reefs can grow as tall as cliffs. Some people call coral reefs the gardens of the sea.
Coral reefs grow in warm ocean waters. Some coral reefs began growing around the
edges of ancient islands formed from volcanoes. Hot lava may
no longer flow from the craters of the volcanoes, but the coral
reefs keep growing. Many other sea animals like seahorses,
mollusks, and small fish live among the coral reefs. Coral reefs
need warm water and sunlight to keep growing. Pollution can
harm the reefs. People must take care to keep the oceans clean.
