1- A 240V, 50 HZ voltage supply is feeding power to a 10 resistor through
a controlled half-wave rectifier operating at a firing angle of 120o as shown
in Figure 1.
a. Sketch the supply voltage, the load voltage and the voltage across the
thyristor (show all relevant magnitudes and angles).
b. Calculate the average output voltage and current.
c. Find the peak reverse and peak forward voltages of the thyristor.
d. Calculate the form factor and ripple factor of the current.

2- The battery shown in Figure 2 has a terminal voltage of 12 V and its


capacity is 100 W-h. The average charging current should be 5A. If the
battery is being charged from an uncontrolled half-wave rectifier
connected to a 60V, 50 Hz AC voltage supply, calculate
a. The conduction angle of the diode.
b. The current limiting resistance R.
c. The charging time in hours.
d. The rectifier efficiency.
e. The peak reverse voltage of the diode.

3- A 240V, 50 HZ AC voltage supply is used to charge a 20V battery with


internal resistance of 1 through a controlled half-wave rectifier operating
at a firing angle of 60o.
a. Sketch the waveforms for the output voltage, output current, and
thyristor voltage (show all relevant magnitudes and angles).
b. Find the input power factor of the supply neglecting the losses in the
thyristor.

4- A 240V, 50 HZ AC voltage supply is used to supply an R-L load as shown
in Figure 4. The resistance is 10 and the inductance is 0.1H.
a. Derive an expression for the output current in terms of the firing angle
and the extinction angle.
b. Sketch the waveforms for the output voltage, output current, resistor
voltage and thyristor voltage for a firing angle 110o (show all relevant
magnitudes and angles).
c. Calculate the average output voltage and current for the above
mentioned firing angle.

5- The 240V, 50Hz supply of the circuit shown in Figure 5 is supplying


power to a load composed of a resistance 15 in series with an inductance
0.12H. The firing angle of the thyristor is 0o (i.e., diode case) and the
operation is assumed to be continuous.
a. Sketch the waveforms of vo(t) , io(t) , vT(t) , vDF(t).
b. Obtain an expression for the output current.
c. Calculate the value of the output current at t = 0 and t = .
d. Calculate the value of the average current.

6- The single phase half wave circuit with free wheeling diode shown in
Figure 5 is used to supply a heavily inductive load having a constant
current of 15A from a 240V, 50 Hz ac supply.
a. Sketch the waveforms of vo(t) , iT(t) ,iDF(t), vDF(t) , vT(t).
b. Calculate the mean load voltage for firing angle 45o,135o,180o.
c. Calculate the value of the resistance in the load for a firing angle of 60o.
d. Find the peak reverse voltage and peak forward voltage for the thyristor
and the peak reverse voltage for the diode.
