Research Question:
How does social conformity change over time ?

Wonder
What is the question you are
trying to answer?

Background information:
According to observations in P.E class, older students tend to try to fit in, while younger
students were very carefree.

Background knowledge
What do I already know?

Research shows that adults feel less impact from social pressure than younger people.
People usually get more confident as they get older - so the more confident they get, they
are less likely to conform to their peers.
According to various websites, younger children feel unsure of their judgements and will
agree to everything their peers say. Websites say that students who do not conform and
fit in with their peers are criticized and left out.
The desire to fit in and conform to societys standards is a uniquely human trait that
begins quite early in childhood, says a new study published in the journal Psychological
Science.
There was an experiment with four year old children where eighteen out of twenty-four
children conformed to their peers. In a second experiment, twelve four year olds
conformed out of eighteen four year olds.
In conclusion, younger children conform to their peers more than older children.
Aim
How will age affect social conformity?
Hypothesis:
If the Grade 2 students are given this stimulus, then they will conform to the other
students. On the other hand, if the Grade 5 students are given this stimulus, then they will
stay true to their answer rather than conform to the other students. This is what I predict
the results will look like:

Aim
What do you want to do?
How will ____ affect _____?

I hypothesise that Grades 1 and 2 on average, will conform to their peers three out of
three times that they are tested. Grade 3 on average, will conform to their peers two out
of the three times they are tested. Grade 4 on average, will conform to their peers one
out of the three times they are tested. Grade 5 on average, will conform to their peers
zero out of the three times they are tested.
Materials:

Test Papers - For the students

4 Students From Each Grade - to do the tests
Pencils - for the students
A Graph - so I can see how conformity has changed over time

Materials
What tools do you need to
complete this experiment?

Method
1. Draw up a graph ( bottom of doc)
2. Formulate three questions for each grade
3. Print the questions for each grade four times
4. Pre-write fake answers on the paper
5. Place an iPad and start recording
6. Ask one teacher from each grade (starting from grade 1,) if you can
borrow one of their students
7. Give them one of the tests and tell them to write down what they think the
answer is
8. Thank the student for their time and send them back to class
9. Go back into the same class and ask for one more student
10. Give the student another copy of the quiz
11. Send the student back into class and thank them for their time
12. Repeat steps 6 - 11 2 times until you have 4 samples from each grade
13. After finishing with the experiment for one grade, thank the teacher for
their time

Method
What are the detailed steps
to completing this
experiment? Be sure its
clear enough for others to
replicate.

I will be using a line graph.

Line graphs compare two variables, in my case, age and conformity. Line graphs easily
shows how something changes over time. They show trends easily, showing how one
variable affects the other; like age and conformity. If the line shows a positive correlation,
it means that conformity levels increases over time, and if the line shows a negative
correlation, it means that conformity levels decreases over time. I want to compare the
grades conformity levels, the boys conformity levels and the girls conformity levels and
a line graph can show the difference very accurately.

Data
What will you be recording?
How will you recording your
data?

I hypothesised that conformity rates decrease as you get older but according to my data,
conformity rates increases over time. My chart says that girls conform less than boys do.
Girls conformity age decreases over time while boys conformity rates increase over
time.
Grade 2 boys and girls conformed the exact same amount of times. Grade 3 boys
conformed the same amount of times that Grade 3 girls did. Grade 4 girls conformed
twice as much as Grade 4 boys did. Grade 5 boys conformed 66% more than girls of
their own grade. Boys conformed 33% more than girls.

The results of my experiment were surprising. My hypothesis was that conformity rates
(how many times a student conformed to their peers out of three times) decreased over
time, but my experiment says that conformity rates increased over time. I found out from
my experiment that older students conformed much more than younger students and that
boys conformed more than girls. During the experiment, the older boys looked at all the
other answers before answering, while the older girls ignored the answers. The younger
children quickly glanced at the answers before writing their own.
I think this is either because my test wasn't fair and I underestimated younger kids skills
and overestimated older kids skills. This could also be because older kids have learnt to
doubt themselves while younger kids are very carefree. Another reason could be that
older students have probably learn to doubt themselves and when tested, probably
doubted themselves and their answers and upon looking at the other students answers,
they conformed to their peers. It could also be that older students are lazier than younger
students and didn't try their bests. I might've not collected enough samplings from
younger grades.
As for the fact that boys conformed more than girls, it could be that boys are lazier than

girls or girls are more confident in their judgments than boys are.
Six months after Jose appeared to adjust to his new school, the eight-year-old suddenly
began protesting he didnt want to go to school and complaining he had no friends. His
mom noticed how often he reacted to situations by saying, I cant, or why bother?, as
though he assumed hed fail, Michele Borba says. Eight year olds (Grade 3 & 4) already
know how to doubt themselves. Dr. Borba says that if parents don't stop their childs
doubt, it will increase over time. Dr. Borba supports my theory that older children know
how to doubt themselves and doubted their answers.
According to Claire Murphy, boys aren't less intelligent, they're just lazier than girls. Professor
Murphy supports my theory that the older boys were lazy and didn't bother trying to finish the
test correctly.

There are a lot of things that I could've done to make my experiment better and more
accurate. I think that I made some of the questions too easy and some of the questions
to hard. I underestimated the younger kids and overestimated the older kids. I only got 6
Grade 3s and 3 Grade 2s. I would definitely change the questions to make them more
suitable for the grades. I would also try to get a bigger sample size. I think it might have
been better if I would've recorded the students reactions to the test. I also should've
taken notes of how the students reacted during the experiment so that I could look back
later on. Another one of my limitations were that there were only three questions per test.
I want to see how ISHCMCs conformity rates compare to other schools. I think that other
schools, conformity rates will be higher than ISHCMC because the students at ISHCMC
are usually confident in their own thoughts.
