respectively.

2. It is known that screws produced by a certain company will be defective

with probability 0.01 independently of each other. The company sells the
screws in packages of 10 and oers a replacement guarantee that at most
1 of the 10 screws is defective. What proportion of packages sold must
the company replace. (Ans. 0.4%)
3. A box contain 10 screws, 3 of which are defective. Two screws are drawn
at random with replacement. What is the probability that none of the
two screws are defective? (Ans. 0.49)
4. An unbiased coin is tossed ve times. The outcomes of each toss is either a
head or a tail. What is the probability of getting atleast one head? (Ans.

32 )
5. If X follows a Binomial distribution with parameter n = 6 and 4P (X =
4) = P (X = 2), then what is the p value? (Ans. 13 )

Problems Based on Poisson Distribution

6. Let a book of 600 pages contains 40 printing mistakes. Let these errors
are randomly distributed throughout the book and r, the number of errors
per page has a Poisson distribution. Then, what is the probability that
10 pages selected at random will be free from errors. (Ans. 0.51)
7. If the variance of the Poisson distribution is 2, then what is the value of
P (x 4). (Ans. 0.143)
8. A manufacturer knows that the razor blades, he makes, contain on the
average 0.5% as defective. He picks them in packets of 5. Then, what is
the probability that a packet at random will contain 3 or more defective
blades. (Ans. 0.000002555)
9. An insurance company found that only 0.01% of the population is involved
in a certain type of accident each year. If its 1000 policy holders are
randomly selected from the population, what is the probability that not
more than two of its clients will be involved in such an accident next year?
(Ans. 0.9998)

10. Records show that the probability of a car breaking down while driving
in a tunnel is 0.0004. What is the probability that out of 2000 cars that
4
drive the tunnel atleast one will break? (Ans. 1 e 5 )

Problems Based on Normal Distribution

11. Let X be a random variable following normal distribution with mean 1
and variance 4. Let y be another normal variate with mean -1 and variance
unknown. If P (x 1) = P (y 2), then what is the standard deviation
of y? (Ans. 3)
12. In the nal examination of the mathematics, the mean was 72 and the
standard deviation was 15. Determine the standard score of students
receiving grade 93. (Ans. 1.4)
13. If log10 X is normally distributed with mean 4 and variance 4, nd the
probability that X lies between 1.202 and 83180000. (Ans. 0.95)
14. Find the value of the integral using normal distribution function

(Ans. I = 1)
15. The mean height of 1000 students at a certain college is 165 cm and
standard deviation 10 cm. Find the number of students whose height is
(i) less than 172 cm, (ii) Between 159 and 178 cm, (iii) More than 173.2
cm. (Ans. 0.7580, 0.6289, 0.2061)
