Case Study 11-B

1. What type of a group do the seven nurses on the night shift represent? Does this
type of group improve the performance of the night shift?
This group is an informal group. This type of group can help the performance
because it can make the working environment enjoyable to the nurses creating a
fun environment that enables them to complete their tasks quickly because it is fun
to them, but this can backfire because if it is too fun they might not get work done
because they might not take the job too seriously, so you need a type of formal and
informal group of some sort.
2. Discuss the topic of group norms as related to this case. How might revising the
group norms improve this situation?
They were too used to hazing new employees who were bad because a new
employee might not like the conditions they were put through and quit. The nurses
should have only done the newbie hazing if it were an employee that they felt was
able to be put through that test and worthy of their group. They shouldnt have
done it to everyone because not everyone wants to play their game.
3. As the supervisor, should Paula work on improving the norms of the informal
group, or should she work on transforming it into a cohesive formal group?
I think Paula should just work on improving the norms of the informal group. The
group is very successful and they are very comfortable in their working environment
creating a perfect place to finish tasks and goals. There is no need for a complete
change, just minor improvements in certain aspects of the group.
