Week 2 Lesson 1
Maths Time, duration - Lesson goal How long is 1 minute, what can you do in that time.
Resources I minute sand timer.
Introduction First lesson on time. Introduce the lesson and let them know they will be
learning about how to read a clock in the next 2 weeks. Explain what a sand timer is and ask
questions about how you might tell what time it is if you didnt have a clock and before clocks
where invented.
Activity Students do a variety of actions for 1 minute, timed with a sand timer. Stand on 1
leg, dont make a sound, pock out your tongue. Close eyes & put up hand when they think 1m
has passed.
Lesson 2: A & B Maths Lesson goal Tell the time to half-hour.
Resources Paper plates, coloured paper with some circles pre-cut as well as other shapes,
pipe cleaners, straws, scissors, sticky tape, glue sticks, long strips of paper. Manipulable
Clocks.
Warm up - Power point on fractions.
A. Introduction Pre-test I want to know how much you know about clocks and telling the
time. Let them know that they are working by themselves and they are not to help others
because I want to know want they know not some one else. Remove clock from wall.
Activity Pre-test Make a clock. Give them no guidance on how to make the clock just
what materials they can use, listed above.
B. Introduction - Using a Clock to demonstrate, 12 hours, 60 minutes and oclock.
Activity Whole group - Using clocks, students change the clock to particular times. Teacher
directed ask them to make a particular time then show what they have done. Give
immediate feedback and correct with explanation as to what they need to change to make it
correct.
Recap Recap lesson, ask how many hours, min in clock.
*If time play Whats the time Mr Wolf Time.
Lesson 3 Maths lesson goal- read analogue clock to the half hour.

Resources Clock stamps, stamp math books with clock stamps prior to lesson.
Warm ups power point on fractions
Introduction Discussion clock characteristics, how many hours & minutes are in an analogue
clock and length of hands.
Activity Practice making different times with clocks and record the times on clock stamps
in math book. Walk around and check students work to make sure they understand they need
to have both short and long hands
Recap clock characteristics.
Lesson 4 Maths- lesson goal - read digital and analogue clocks to the half hour.
Resources Paper plates, coloured paper cut into circles and some squares, long strips of
paper, pipe cleaners, straws, scissors, glue sticks, sticky tape.
Warm ups shape power point
Introduction AM, PM, difference in writing times in analogue & digital.
Activity Make a clock with explicit teaching on where the numbers are placed and different
length hands. Materials listed above.
Recap Students share their clocks with the class.
Week 3 Lesson 1 Maths - Lesson goal Describe duration using months, weeks and days
Resources Copies of days of week out of order work sheet, glue sticks and scissors.
Warm up Video of months of the year.
Introduction Talk about days of week, months of year and ask them if they know what
happens on particular months, eg Christmas, seasons and birthdays.
Activity Cut and past names of the week in order and draw a picture of something you do on
some of the days eg school, sport, weekend. Recap Days of week, months of year.
Lesson 2 Maths lesson goal Tell time to half an hour.
Resources Post-test on time, days and months sheet.
Warm ups Recite days of week and months of year.
Introduction Tell the students I want to know have much you have learnt about time. You
will be working alone and are not to help others, I want to know how much you know not the
person sitting next to you. I want you to fill in this sheet and stick it in your math book.
Activity Post-test on clock time, days and months of the year.
