The History Of Halloween

Halloween is not like other holidays like

Christmas that celebrates one event.
Halloween celebrates a lot of things
including the lives of people who arent
with us anymore.

The history of Halloween is not really a

clear one but here is how we think it all
started:

The History Of Halloween

Many hundreds
of years ago,
people called
Celts lived in
Europe and on
the British Isle.
The Celts believed that the souls of the
dead visited Earth on the last day of
October. They had a festival in honor of
these souls of the dead that they called
Samhain (sa mane).

The History Of Halloween

In time, the
Roman Empire
beat the Celts
in war and
took over
some of their
beliefs as well including Samhain and
combined it with their own festivals.
Since the Roman Empire spread across
a large part of world, the idea that the
souls of the dead visited Earth on the
last day of October spread quickly.

The History Of Halloween

Many ideas from the Roman days are

still around today in the United States
and other western countries. Halloween
is one of them.
How did we get the name Halloween?
th

In the 8 century, the

Catholic church declared
November 1st to be All
Saints Day. The church
calendar already had a
number of days honoring

saints so this was the day chosen to

honor all saints that didnt have a day
named in their honor.
The mass that the Catholic church
celebrated on November 1st was called
Allhallowmas. This meant mass of all
the hallowed (saintly people). It was
commonly called All Hallows Day.
And somewhere along the line, the night
before November 1st became known as
Allhalloween, which was short for
evening before All Hallows Day.

It was then shortened to what we now

call it, Halloween.

Why do we dress up as ghosts, goblins,

vampires, and other scary creatures on
Halloween?
The people who started all this
Halloween business so many years ago
believed that if they appeared scary,

they would scare away the

spirits of the dead who were
roaming the earth on All
Hallows Eve.
These people also carried food to the
edge of the town and left it there, hoping
the spirits would eat that food and not
come raid the village. This is how the
idea of trick or treating for candy came
about.
