This
is a
stepbystep
tutorial on how to weave your very own basket out of paper
Step 1: Cutting out the pieces
Cut out 128 pieces of paper (5cm by 12.5 cm).
Step 2: Folding horizontally
Fold each piece of paper in half (horizontally).
Paper Baskets
This Instructable shows how to make a paper basket that is approximately 4" x 4" x 4". I created this to use as an
Easter basket, but it will of course work for other purposes.
If you'd like to see this in video form, click the video above :)
You will need:
- 3 colors of paper (heavier weighted paper will work best - construction paper, cardstock, etc.)
- Glue (A glue gun works well for this)
Step 1: Cut the paper into strips
You'll need to cut the paper into 1" wide strips. You can measure the first one, then use it
as a pattern and trace it to create the others.
- Cut four 14" long pieces of the first color of paper.
- Cut four 14" long pieces of the second color.
- Cut five 18" long pieces of the third color.
-Set one of these aside to use as the handle for the basket.
If you don't have paper that is long enough, you can tape two pieces together.
Step 2: Arrange 4 pieces
Arrange the first two colors (14" pieces) in the pattern above.
Step 3: Weave in 4 pieces
Weave in 4 pieces (14" ones) horizontally so it looks like the picture above.
Step 4: Adjust everything
Adjust the pieces so the inner square is about 4" x 4", and the outer pieces are at least
4".
Step 5: Glue down each corner
Step 6: Fold all pieces inwards
Fold each piece inwards towards the center.
Step 7: Mark and fold the 18" pieces
On 4 of the 18" pieces, measure and make a mark every 4". Then fold the paper on each
mark.
Once you've done this, glue the ends together on each piece.
Step 8: Weave each of these 4 pieces in
Weave in each of these pieces to form the basket. Follow an under / over pattern with
the outside pieces. If the 1st piece goes under, the next piece should go over.
After this, the leftover paper at the top can be folded over (if long enough), or just
trimmed an glued to the side.
Step 9: Glue on the handle, and you're done!
Glue each side of the handle to the inside of the basket, and you're done! You've just
made a paper basket.
To make this basket you'll need a round piece cut out from
cardboard and strips of 0.5 cm width. Use super glue to stick 12
strips with the round cardboard plate. Now hold few strips up as
shown in the picture. Take another strip and start weaving by
circling around. After weaving the first strip you won't need to hold
the paper strips up as they will remain straight themselves. Keep
weaving around the basket, but keep about half to 1 inch of the
strips at the end. Fold the remaining parts of the strips inside and glue them. You can use extra papers
to make borders to. This basket turns out really cute!
Step 5: Paper Basket - 4
Take even number of strips to make this basket, it
makes it easier. Lay out 4 strips (regular strips as
I've shown at the first step) vertically and 4 strips
horizontally. Tighten the weave carefully and make
sure the strips are even. I've shown the folding lines
in the first picture of this step. Fold up the strips of
any one side and start weaving by placing one strip
over the other (as shown in the second-1 picture of
this step). This kind of weaving will form a corner as
you can see in the second-2 picture. Continue weaving like this and after
few a steps it'll form a figure like the second-4 picture. You can fold the
remaining strips inside or cut them into smaller parts and then fold inside.
Use glue while folding , so that they don't come out.
These are the 5 easy and simple paper basket weaving. I'll be crafting
more paper baskets using different patterns very soon and try to add more
details in the crafting.
Step 6: Paper Basket - 5
To make this
basket you
can use all
the remaining
strips, so that
they don't get
wasted. Stick all the remaining strips together vertically with glue or scotch
tape.
Cut out an oval shape from cardboard or thick paper. Now take the strip
and glue it with the oval shaped cardboard plate (as shown in the picture).
Start coiling up carefully and continue gluing the strip until its finish. When the strip comes to an end
fold it inside and use glue to make sure it doesn't come out.
Decorative bowls from recycled paper
Step 1: Materials needed
Below are the step by step on how we can reuse the newspaper to make souvenir or gifts to
friends and loved one.
Materials Needed:
1.Newspaper, magazines or papers
2.Scissors or knife
3.Paper Glue
4.Small rattan or stick
5.Wooden or rattan varnish
How to prepare the stick:
1.Cut newspaper into size which you want. It can as small as photo no.1. For me I choose A4 size. So I
cut the newspaper into A4 size paper.
2.Roll the paper so that it become as a stick (refer photo no.1&2) using small stick as a guide to get
small stick.Use glue at the end of the paper to stick the paper together. Take out the small stick from the
paper stick.
Note: The paper stick has 2 egde, one must bigger than other one so that we can joint it together.
3.Two type of sticks short (for base/bottom part) long stock (for weave).Long sticks we can produce by
joint 2 short sticks together using glue.
How to start weave (Bottom part)
1.Use always odd number of stick such as 7,9,11,13. I used 13 short stick for my basket.
2.Allocate 13 short sticks in star shape (refer picture 3). Use paper glue to stick them together.
3.Start to weave from bottom to top(wall of the basket & lastly the holder). There is many type of
weave, but I choosed easier one which one part on top and below (refer picture 6).
4. For bottom part, use 4-5 sticks weave together (its depends to how big the basket you want). For
wall, use 8-11sticks (depends on how tall you want too)
5.Lastly, make the holder by plait the stick together.
6.After finished (as picture 7), we can paint it using varnish. The basket will look like as made from
rattan instead of newspaper.
We also can make other things such as pencil holder, vase plate, basket with cover, vase and many
more.
