INTRODUCTION TO WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY

What is wireless?
WIRELESS means having no wires.
In Network Terminology, wireless is the term
used to describe any computer network where
there is no physical wired connection between
the sender and the receiver.
Rather, the network is connected by radio waves
or microwaves to maintain communications
Wireless networking utilizes specific equipment
such as NICs and Routers in place of wires
(Optical fibres).

PREVIOUS
GENERATIONS OF
WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY

1st GENERATION
Analog voice-only cellular telephone standard.
1G networks use analog signals.
Voice itself during a call is only modulated to higher frequency(150

MHz)

Speed of 1st generation of analog cell phones is up to 2.4kbps.

Allows users to make voice calls in 1 country.
1G standards

NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone)

AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System)

2nd GENERATION
Commercially launched on the GSM standard in Finland (1991).
2G network allows for much greater penetration intensity.
Provide the services such as text messages, picture messages and

MMS.

Text messages and voice conversations are digitally encrypted.

2G uses either time division multiple access (TDMA) or code

division multiple access (CDMA) standards.

GSM technology help to establish international roaming.

Speeds up to 64kbps

3rd GENERATION
Make use of TDMA and CDMA
The spectral efficiency of 3G technology is better than 2G

technologies

Transmission speeds from 125kbps to 2Mbps.

Data is sent through technology called packet switching .
High clarity in Voice calls.
Applications: Mobile T.V, Video Conferencing, Video Calls,

MMS, 3D gaming, Multi-Gaming

4th GENERATION

high-speed data access

high quality streaming video

combination of Wi-Fi and Wi-Max
SDR,OFDM,OFDMA and MIMO standards
are used .

WHAT IS 5G?
5G is a packet switched wireless system
with wide area coverage and high
throughput(rate of successful message
delivery over a communication channel.)
5G wireless uses OFDM and millimeter
wireless that enables data rate of 1Gbps
and frequency band of 2-8 GHz.
5G is going to be a packet based network.

OBJECTIVES
5G being developed to accommodate QoS rate

requirements set by further development of existing

4G applications.

Flexible channel bandwidth between 5 and 20MHz,

optionally up to 40MHz.

Data rate of at least 1Gbps between any two points in

the world.

Increase system spectral efficiency of up to

3bit/s/Hz/cell in the downlink and 2.25bit/s/Hz/cell

for indoor usage.

5G WIRELESS STANDARDS

WiMAX formed to provide quality and interoperability of the

IEEE 802.16 standard. It aims to provide wireless data over long
distance from point-to-point link to cellular mobile type access.

WiBRO a part of IEEE 802.16e in process to provide

collaborative and generic mobile WiMAX.

3GPP LTE a project aims to improve the mobile phone

standard to cope with future requirements.

5GPP 2 UMB a project to improve the CDMA2000 mobile

phone standard for next generation applications.

WIBRO WORKING

IPv6 SUPPORT
IPv6 increases the IP addresses size from 32bit to 128

bits, to support more levels of addressing hierarchy

(order) and much greater number of addressable
node.

IPv6 support large number of wireless enabled

devices.

IPv6 Extend the IP address space enough to offer a

unique IP address to any device.

IPv6 Improve support for IP Mobility.

BENEFITS
High speed, high capacity, and low cost per bit.
Support interactive multimedia, voice, streaming

video, Internet, and other broadband services ,more

effective and more attractive ,Bi directional ,accurate
traffic statistics.

5G technology is providing large broadcasting of data

in Gigabit which supporting almost 65,000

connections.

Through remote management offered by 5G

technology a user can get better and fast solution.

BENEFITS
1 Gbps speed simultaneously to many workers on

the same office floor

Spectral efficiency significantly enhanced

compared to 4G

Coverage improved
Signalling efficiency enhanced
Latency (Delay in data Transmission) reduced

significantly

RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

2013
12th May: South Korean technology giant

breakthroughs in the development of next
generation networking technology, and was
able to transmit data @ 1Gbps speed through
28GHz band
6th November: Huawei announced plans to
invest a minimum of $600 million into R&D
for generation of 5G networks which are 100
times faster than the Modern LTE networks

2014

THE METIS PROJECT

METIS : Mobile and wireless-communications

Enablers for Twenty-twenty(2020) Information

Society
METIS is co-funded by the European Commission as
an Integrated Project under the Seventh Framework
Programme (FP7) for research and development
The Project will provide an important platform for a
European-lead early global consensus on
fundamental questions connected to the
development of the future mobile and wireless
communication system, and pave the way for future
standardization of systems such as 5G.

CONCLUSION
Migration to 5G networks ensures convergence of

more applications and services.

5G can serve as a flexible platform for data usage

with less hardware.

Wireless carriers have an opportunity to shorten

Investment return, improve operating efficiency

and increase revenues.

5G - a promising Generation of wireless

communication that will change peoples lives.
