PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

02

On behalf of the NWS Board of Directors,

I am pleased and excited to share our 96th
Annual International Exhibition Catalog.
We hope you will be able to see the show
in our San Pedro Gallery from October 22
through December 18, 2016. We are proud
that this exhibition of 96 paintings includes
work from around the world and almost every
state in America.
This year NWS developed an entirely new
online jurying system, allowing our jurors to
deeply consider each piece in the comfort
of their own homes, rather than travel to the
gallery to make single-day assessments. Our
Jury of Selection Frank Webb, Paul Jackson
and Myrna Wacknov, did a terrific job. We
thank them for the time they took, because
the many entries were outstanding and their
task was difficult. Our thanks also goes to the
Awards Juror, Derrick Cartwright, Director of
University Galleries and Professor of Art at
the University of San Diego, for sharing his
time with such patience, expertise and deep
discernment.

or a Signature member, we are grateful for

your continued support and volunteerism. An
exhibition like this does not just happen. At
every stage, from acceptance of images to
the hanging of a show, talented artists on our
board and member volunteers temporarily
set aside their own painting concerns in order
to become facilitators in showcasing the
work of other artists. After all, the mission of
the NWS is to select and showcase the best
water-media artists in the world and the high
quality presentation of this exhibition reflects
that dedication.
Finally, we would like to thank our generous
donors and sponsors; they give for the love
and support of art and artists. Please take
note of the advertised sponsors in this catalog
and support them in any way you can. They,
along with artists who use their products, are
a mainstay of NWS exhibitions.

Ken Goldman
PRESIDENT, NWS

To all exhibiting artists and award winners,

congratulations for being chosen from such
a large field. To those of you who achieved
Signature status, we welcome you into the
lettered fold. Whether you are part of our

JUROR of AWARDS

03

Derrick R Cartwright
The approach to curating this years National
Watercolor Societys International Exhibition
was rooted in art history and steeped in
admiration for the wide range of work being
done by contemporary practitioners. My own
scholarly work has provided opportunities to
write about nineteenth- and twentieth-century
American watercolors by James McNeill
Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Charles Demuth,
and Eva Hesse, to name just a few artists
whose names might be familiar to readers of
this statement. I enjoyed those scripting tasks
but undertook them always with a sense of
awe for those legendary talents. The pleasure
I derived from reviewing the submissions
to this years exhibition was something
different, but not less humbling. The range
of approaches to this famously unforgiving
medium is impressive to behold. From purely
transparent to inventive applications of
opaque color, to bold and fine linear forms,
this body of work struck me as being effective
and smart, comprehensive and satisfying.
Congratulations to all the artists selected for
this exhibition, therefore.
In identifying the prize-winning entries, I
looked for works that achieved something
beyond technical competency, of which there
were perhaps many more examples than
awards. Specifically, I watched out for imagery
that either paid sly homage to past leaders
in this field or else moved decisively away

from the mediums historic,

representational roots. I found
much that Andrew Wyeth would
commend in the figurative
commitments of these painters.
John Marin and Marguerite
Zorach would have enjoyed
many of the seascapes and
cityscapes encountered here,
too. At the same time, I also
hoped to recognize more
experimental efforts on paper.
There were a surprising number of first-time
entries doing abstractions that I noted as
worthwhile. This is just to say that I tried hard
to recognize both familiar-seeming strategies
and innovative efforts. The results may appear
aesthetically divergent when viewed all at
once. I accept that and take it as a sign of
strength for todays watercolors.
What remained with me for days after jurying
ended was a sense of optimistic practice
spread across this truly broad creative
community. The works included in the 96th
Anniversary show suggest both earnestness
and bold hope for the future of the medium.
I am proud to have played a small role in
underscoring this larger effort.

Selection is a bittersweet experience. Bitter because we could not include them all, sweet
because excellence is to be paraded before the public. In choosing, I look for design, concept
and expression, whereas technique is only a means.
When beholding a painting, I want to respond, as did Charles Demuth, who said, A painting
should be the nth degree of whoopee. I was impressed with not only the art, but also the
societys efficiency and skill in presenting this international exhibition. Perusing these paintings,
you will have your own favorites.
- Frank Webb
With so many amazing entries, judging the National Watercolor Society is a difficult and
humbling experience. This was not about sorting out competent paintings, but about ranking
one masterpiece over the next. Selecting between them makes for an incredible exhibition,
but leaves amazing work out as well. With three jurors there are often three different opinions,
and sometimes a tug of war. The result is a wonderful cross section of our choices and an
outstanding display of the best our medium has to offer.
- Paul Jackson
It was an honor to participate as a juror for the 96th Annual NWS International Exhibition. With
so many entries of the highest caliber, we could have selected three or more shows but had to
narrow our choices to less than one hundred. Three different judges with three very different
approaches to making art and evaluating art made for an interesting process of accommodation.
This year the judges were able to spend as much time as we needed to carefully view each entry.
I hope everyone enjoys the excellent pieces that we selected for the show.
Congratulations to all the fabulous artists who entered the show. And, a huge thank you to the
NWS Board Members who spent so many hours selflessly putting this show together.

Chris Van Winkle (1929 2016)

NWS PAST PRESIDENT
The sheer act of painting was a joy for Chris.
His talent for drawing was evident early in his
life. An avid reader, he sought books on the
masters Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Turner.
How did they create those paintings?
In Toronto, he studied at the Ontario College
of Art; life drawing, art history, oil painting. He
loved it all. The Canadian Group of Seven were
his idols. Landscapes of Canadas bold scenery,
strong shapes and vivid colors amazed him.

As artists, we must be open

to all stimulation. When we
encounter a new site, we must
use all our senses. We sketch;
this is how we see. But when we
paint, we must invoke memory.
Memory of place is much more
than a collection of details.
Chris Van Winkle

In 1959, Chris moved his family to Southern

California. He set up shop as a graphic artist.
Now he was enchanted with new landscapes
mountains, ocean, palm trees and old missions.
At the Art Center College of Design, he
improved his graphic skills while he continued
to paint oil landscapes.

teaching immensely and shared his love of

watercolor enthusiastically with his students.
His demonstrations were informative and
entertaining. He loved to travel and paint,
and led workshops around the world.
Chris served as NWS president from 2005
2007. He organized the fundraising and the
construction to convert the warehouse in San
Pedro into the NWS Gallery. In 2009, the NWS
Member Show was the first exhibition in the
gallery and Chris conducted the first workshop.
The 2010 NWS National Exhibition celebrated
the gallerys grand opening.
Chris passed away in January, 2016. Perhaps
these thoughts from artists best tell the story:
He leaves behind a legacy of excellence
and good humor. We will miss him, but his
presence lives on to inspire many more.
Armando Ruiz

In the 1970s, Chris discovered Robert

Hallett who taught watercolor at Citrus College.
A challenging new world opened for Chris.
Watercolor painting took on a life of its own
magic! Chris took every class Hallett taught,
not once but twice. Meeting Milford Zornes and
painting with him broadened Chris knowledge.
Henry Fukuhara and Robert E. Wood added
to his growing mastery of watercolor. When
Hallett retired, he recommended that Chris
take over his classes. Chris humbly accepted
and taught at Citrus for thirty years. He enjoyed

You were the first teacher who cared enough

to push. I was eager and hungry to learn and you
fed me. You taught me to see with the eyes of an
artist. Not to copy what I saw, but to share how
the world made me feel through my paintings.
Your teaching gave me the courage I needed.
You gave me a whole new world I love.

George James (1932 2016)

NWS PAST PRESIDENT
This NWS Past Presidents (1995) journey began
simply enough, in an art class his senior year
at Newport Harbor High School in Newport
Beach, California. His teacher noticed he had
an aptitude for color. Throughout the next sixty
years, George James established himself as
one of Californias premiere artists.
A Michigan native, his family relocated to Costa
Mesa, California, in 1947. Early mentoring with
watercolor luminaries Rex Brandt, Phil Dike
and Joan Irving led him to The Art Institute
and CSU Long Beach.
Carving the dual paths of professional artist
and teacher, he mentored generations of art
students at Savannah High School, Orange
Coast College, Golden West College and
California State University, Fullerton, where
he joined the faculty in 1968 and retired as
Professor Emeritus of Art.
Early success placed him in a select group
of California watercolor painters contributing
to the body of American Art. Fueled by an
insatiable sense of curiosity, genuine wonder,
and work ethic (although work is a misnomer),
he preferred the term practice and the ritual
possessed a sense of happy anticipation.

HABOR TRAFFIC, 22" X 30"

George continued experimenting with

different subject matter, technology and
materials and combinations of all the above
throughout every phase of his career. The
result is a canon of work breathtaking in its
scope and diversity.
One of his most notable discoveries occurred
during an in-class watercolor demonstration
at CSUF, where he borrowed from a student
a piece of YUPO, a bright white synthetic
paper. This happy accident inspired a new
movement in the art form that watercolorists
now emulate and ushered in a new professional chapter. His YUPO paintings garnered
national and international acclaim. Hes the
recipient of the Gold (99), Silver (14) and
Bronze (98) Medals from the American
Watercolor Society and the National
Watercolor Societys Silver Star. His award
winning work is featured in magazines,
books, videos, collections and traveling
exhibitions throughout the world.

As a teacher, his infectious

warmth as a person was as
central to his success as the
sum of all he taught.
Pat Mudge

George, my longtime
friend and mentor, often
said that an artist is not a
recorder. He felt strongly

A cancer diagnosis and four years of

chemotherapy did little to curb this lifelong
love of craft. He continued to paint. Several
new works were in process, and through it all,
there was always a sketch pad by his bed.

that there should be a

piece of the artists heart
or spirit in each painting.

NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

Past, Present and Future
With an exciting vision and a new appreciation
for an old art form, the California Water Color
Society was founded in 1920. As the country
grew, painters found inspiration in the expansive
western lands and were, in their way, pioneers of
a new spirit.
The name of the society has changed twice
since that time: first in 1967, to California National
Watercolor Society; then in 1975, when the
members voted to become simply the National
Watercolor Society. The first exhibition was held
at the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science
and Art, which later became the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art. The first twenty-five
annual exhibitions were held there. From 1946
through the early 1960s, exhibitions were often
at the Pasadena Art Museum but also in Santa
Barbara, San Diego and the San Francisco area.
From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Laguna
Beach Museum of Art was most often the host
gallery, in addition to the Otis Art Institute and
the Palm Springs Desert Museum. Throughout
the 1980s until 2010, the annual shows were
held at the Brea Civic Cultural Center, the
Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton and
the Riverside Art Museum.
Throughout the 1950s, a biennial drawing and
print show was also presented. Most years there
was a show only for Signature Members. In 1956,
the Exhibit of California and Canadian Watercolours was held in both countries. In 1960, Mexico
City hosted La Sociedad de Acuarelistes de
California. The past presidents were honored
in 1976 and 1987 with shows at the Brand
Library Art Center. To broaden the collections of
watercolors accessible to the public, the Society
donated twenty-five paintings spanning the early
years (19251954) to the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art. The selections from 1955 to
1980 were on loan to the Laguna Beach
Museum of Art until 1989.
Although NWS is obviously an exhibiting
society, it is also an educating society. The
images of its annual exhibitions are available for
purchase on digital media as well as full color
catalogs. Its traveling exhibitions have visited
collegiate and public galleries and museums
throughout the United States and Canada.
Special written materials are often prepared
for these institutions. In conjunction with the
annual exhibitions, lectures and orientation
programs are made available to docents of the
host museums. As an additional service to the
public, an Associates membership category

was implemented. People who are interested

in watercolor, or art in general, may become
Associates and attend openings, shows and
society events. They receive all the NWS
publications and may submit work for the juried
shows for the same fees as Signature Members.
This membership provides an opportunity
for involved patronage by those who wish to
appreciate, encourage, and support the efforts
of the society.
The society also exhibited watercolors from its
permanent collection featuring award-winning
works from the 1955 to 1985 annual exhibitions.
This show was held in January 1993 at the
County of Los Angeles Century Gallery in
Sylmar, California.
In 1995, all available NWS archival material,
including slides of our shows, catalogs and
records, were sorted, classified and delivered on
August 30, 1995, to the Smithsonian Institution
Branch Office located in the Huntington Library,
San Marino, California. This material has now
been accepted under a Deed of Gift and
has become an official part of the Smithsonian
Archives of American Art. When processed, this
material will be accessible to everyone through
the information highway.
In 1999, the National Watercolor Society
purchased a building at 915 South Pacific Avenue,
San Pedro, California. This has become the
societys center for offices, gallery, workshops
and a place to house our growing permanent
collection. Since 2009, the NWS All-Member
Exhibitions and the International Exhibitions have
been held in this newly renovated gallery.
In recent years, NWS has continued to grow as
a global organization with members throughout
the world. In 2013/2014, NWS joined with the
International Society of Experimental Artists (ISEA)
and the Welsh Group of Wales for a small image
exhibition in venues in Florida and California,
and on to Wales. Then 2014 saw an exchange
with the Biennale Internationale dAquarelle,
Eau en Coulours, in Belgium, with the paintings
traveling to the NWS Gallery. In 2015, NWS
collaborated with the Shenzhen International
Biennial for a small image exchange exhibition
shown first in four venues in China and, in
August, 2016, in the NWS Gallery in San Pedro,
CA. This same year, NWS participated in an
invitational exhibition of plein air paintings at the
Muckenthaler Museum in Fullerton, CA.
