TASL 503 Assignment 3

This test would be a summative final test given to ASL 1 students to be given at end of the semester (1st
semester of the ASL classes) covering all the different materials we have covered in class. The instructions are
in English text in the video and on paper as well. I want to see my students demonstrate that they are able to
understand me whether I ask a question or tell a story in ASL. The test itself should take about 30 to 45
minutes depending on if it is given to whole class at same time, or if students individually complete it on their
own in the chromebook in class. The total possible for this part of the exam is worth 70 points.

That is why I decided on an assortment for the assessment to cover the materials we have learned. First
we will do 5 questions that I sign in ASL and students answer in complete sentences in English on
paper/chromebook. Then there would be 5 questions for students to identify which types of questions they are.
Each answer for the 1st and 2nd part would be worth 1 point if the student answered correctly. For part 3, I
would create five short stories using the vocabulary they were exposed to over the semester. Then I would ask
them 5 questions about the story or 3 questions related to the story, and 2 true/false statements. Each correct
answer would give the student 2 points possible on the Part 3 of exam. I would wrap up with a map, giving
directions in ASL to see if the students do understand that portion and are able to comprehend where certain
rooms are and answer the following English questions below the map.

Reflection on Assignment 3
September 13, 2015- This is a lot more work than Ive ever put into any final exams over the past 2 years. I
feel good about the progress though because comparing this one to my first one that I did. For some parts of
this, I pulled up my old videos that I did last year for the final exam in the winter and some of the stuff on that
was still worth keeping for this so I applied it to the first part of this exam but I changed up the rest of it to give
it more variety in terms of analyzing students thinking and processing skills. I started thinking about the types
of questions and answers I wanted from the students to assess their receptive skills first and wrote those out. I
have changed how I evaluate and assess my students on summative evaluations by a lot. I didnt have clear
rubric expectations on my old exams so sometimes it was hard for me to keep track of how certain parts were
graded or how I would analyze students writing (from interpreting ASL questions asked of them). Basically,
the students would be reminded to be familiar with the signs we have used in class from day 1 to now, and I
would have given them plenty of opportunities to practice these signs, even going as far as to make sure I bring
the signs up every few weeks to refresh their memory by either bringing it back into the dialogue with what we
are currently learning or using game days to review those signs. They have practiced different forms of
dialogues that I created and they have had opportunities to create their own dialogues which I have recorded
during class once a week or so, and uploaded unlisted to youtube to show the class for analyzing. I know this
exam will be the one I will give this year, perhaps with some more revisions as I see more of what we cover
between now and December so Im aware this is a work in progress and I can expand on some parts of it or
change it depending on what students are doing before deciding on the final look of it. I do wonder sometimes
if it is too easy for the students or if I sign too slow in the video just so Im clear in what Im signing for the
exams.
October 2, 2015 - Based on the feedback from teacher, I realized that a few things werent appropriate for this
type of test like for example, giving directions in ASL even if English captions are provided is not good at the
ASL 1 level. Also, the expressive part had to be deleted (which means the rubric might be best for the
expressive portion of test, but not this one). My professor wanted me to include more stories so I included more

in this redo version. I tried to keep it simple as much as possible and the questions simple, thinking about my
students feeling nervous. I find creating my own stories difficult at this time mainly because I make it harder
than it should be. My students should be familiar with a lot of the vocabulary I chose for the stories and feel
comfortable enough while taking this one due to lots of in class practice using dialogue type conversations and
reviewing signs throughout the semester. The total points possible for this portion of the exam is definitely 70,
but without having completed a written portion for Deaf culture and expressive portion, it is hard to say for sure
how many points total for the whole summative exam, which is why I grade each portion separately so students
can see in their grade book where they did well and where they may need to work harder on the next semester.
Im not sure if my video satisfies me because I added in lots of slides with English text throughout the video.
Perhaps I should have done the questions for the stories twice one by one instead of the set of 5, then repeat
that. I know Im on the right track by making sure I either show the video twice if I keep videos separate from
each other, or edit in the creator to have the same video shown twice if its in a combined video like this.
