Teacher Candidate Goals and Objectives

Year: 2015-16
Academic focus:
Advisor: Luke Modder

Maths

Goal #1 - Academic
Objectives:
I want to be able to convince students that they CAN do math, that they have BEEN
doing math implicitly in their day to day lives and they just dont know it, and show
students that math really does apply to bigger concepts in the community.

Goal #2 - Interpersonal

Objectives:
I want to make an emotional connection with students. I dont want to just be Mr.
Mak the maths teacher. I want to be someone they trust enough to come to me
with questions and ask for help. I want to be a teacher that they see as human, as
a person who can make mistakes and isnt perfect, so they can see that they can
accomplish goals in maths or any subject or obstacle in their lives.
Goal #3 - Interpersonal
Objectives
I want to be entertaining. I want to make maths fun. I want students to look
forward to maths and see what crazy project or demonstration Ive come up with to
explain the lesson. I want students to love my classroom and miss it when they are
done. I want to be someone they come back to to update on how theyre doing and
what great things theyve accomplished.

Self-Evaluation
Personal
1. What are my strengths?
My strengths are my approachability, my charisma, and my ability to admit
when Im wrong. I feel that students could easily approach me with problems
with assignments or concepts in class. I feel like many students will come to
me with personal problems, which Im still learning the proper way to deal
with (probably mention this in the next question). I think my charisma will be
great for a maths class. I can bring new life into an admittedly and easily
boring subject. Admitting when Im wrong is a good thing to do, it makes you
human and it makes you humble. You cant learn if you think youre right all
the time and the world is wrong.
2. What would I like to work on?
Im finding it hard to draw the line of how to respond when students come to
me with problems. When do I defer to a counsellor? When do I defer to
parents? A lot of my high school teachers were there for students during all
their breaks and before and after school. They were basically counsellors. They
cared for their students and thats why I want to be a teacher. But the BEd
program is sort of suppressing that urge in teachers, and that worries me.
3. Why did I choose Education?
Oh I didnt see this question. I answered it above. Its because my teachers got
me through high school by being there for me and being trustworthy people
that I wanted to do good work for. My parents were there for me and were
motivators also, but not to the extent that the teachers were. They were
humans and they cared and were passionate about their jobs. I want to make
the same differences in students that they did for me and so many others.
Educational
1. What have I learned since entering the Education Faculty?

Ive learnt about how careful I need to be about how I present myself, and
exactly how I speak to students regarding tone and vocabulary regarding
gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, and culture. Ive learnt that ELL
students may actually be an issue. In my head, I thought that maths was
universal and I didnt have to worry about it, but there are some language
barriers that need to be overcome, and I never considered them until the
Education Faculty.
2. What questions do you have about education?
As stated above, where do I draw the line between teacher and counsellor?
How do I incorporate more Aboriginal and cultural education into maths? What
are the politics like?
3. What are my fundamental beliefs about education?
Education is ongoing and continuous. Its a process we all continually go
through every day. It doesnt begin at the school doors, and doesnt end when
you walk out them. Education is a life-long lifestyle. An educator is there to
serve the students needs and to prepare them for adult life emotionally, as
well as intellectually.
