Course Outline and Objectives

The goal of this course is to provide the students with the mechanics of materials fundamentals
that form a central ingredient of engineering design and analysis. The course content emphasizes
the principles and analysis of equilibrium and deformation in structures, specifically the principles
of static analysis combined with the theory of linear elasticity. On these foundations, the capability
of carrying out the three-dimensional analysis of combined bending and torsion loading scenarios
will be built, with a view towards characterizing and identifying structural failure. The underlying principles and concepts are essential to modern engineering approaches in materials science,
nanomechanics and biomechanics.

Assessment and Grading

Quiz (%18): 9 quizzes will be held. The quiz questions will be based on the content of
preceding homework assignments. The homeworks will not be graded.
Lab Report (%12):
Two lab sessions will be held. Reports will be submitted via MOODLE. Late submissions
will not be accepted.
Examination (%70): Midterm 1 (%20), Midterm 2 (%20), Final (%30)
FZ Policy: To qualify for the final exam, the average grade for the two midterms should be
at least 35 out of 100.
