Diegetic sound: In order to not distract the focus not dialogue

is within the opener. However, the points of interest grow to

show the development of the cities and they move in a
clockwork-like motion. There is sound of the gears moving and
the city taking shape.
Non-Diegetic sound- The opening is edited with the theme
song so it would flow rather than cut in an out of the main
focus. It also provides a certain relation of the show so that an
audience will automatically connect the tune with the show.

Typography- The font used in Game of Thrones is like an ironforged lettering to express the fact that it is set during a middle
age like time.
Mise-en-scene- Characters are dressed in royal garbs and fur
pelts due to the time being centered around a fictional version
of the Middle Ages. Knights armor can also be seen.
Action Code- A camera pans over an artistic representation of
the known world. Showcasing the major cities, castles, and forts.

Camera Angles/Editing- The camera uses a combination of

panning, tracking, and zooms to follow the lay of the land and
focus on the points of interest. It also switches back and forth
from slow and fast paced for emphasis.
Colors- Colors are mainly bronze, golds, yellows, and silvers to
express a metallic or postmodern effect. Some green and white
are used to give an environmental effect.

Genre/Theme

In the opener there is no characters as

it is showing the layout of the entire
world with all of the major cities.
However, as the pilot episode opens we
have a glimpse of a major house that is
present in all seasons, house Stark.
What can be assumed is that this house
will end up being the leading
protagonists due to their honorable
attitude and their continuous upholding
of traditional morals. The major
antagonists are the Lannisters. This can
be understood by their portrayal and
their regard for anyone other than
themselves.

Game of Thrones follows the different houses of

Westeros and Easteros and their different struggles.
However, the main story line is based on the war of
the roses. This is what gives the show its title, for, the
main focus is the different powers fighting over claim to
the throne.
The main enigma has a true right to the iron throne.
Events from the past have a probable impact in the
events currently happening.

House vs. House

(Lannister vs. Stark)
(Baratheon vs Targaryen)
(Bolten vs Stark)
Moral vs. Immoral
(Whether a house should kill or spare
one another))
Living vs Dead
(Humans vs White walkers)

Narrative Codes

Game of Thrones is not televised on public television

because of a plethora of adult themes. However, the
opinion of HBO is that the audience be at least 15+.
Harsh themes include: nudity, profanity, gore, and
extremely graphic content.
The plotline calls for war, sexual themes, and violent
confrontations. This explains the use of many visuals
not appropriate for young children. However, both
young and old audiences are interested in the cinematic
performance of the actors and the intense plotline that
the show provides brilliantly.

1. Knowledge about the world is

shown.
2. A god like view of the world,
which is also present in the
actual show as well.
Different readings of images due to
the technical codes and visual
codes.
