Directions: Circle the verbs in the paragraphs.
The children in the park told us about the story keeper. They said she lived in this part of
the city. A boy named Carlos took Mom and me to her place. He waved his arm at a
window high above the street. She lives there! Carlos said. Then he darted away. I
liked her as soon as I met her. We sat in a large room.
The lions and the tigers in this zoo were so docile that I could not but treat them as
domestic animals like the dog and the cat. I went very close to them, but they showed
little interest in me. I then began to think of how the animal or even human spirit could
be broken by confinement. Confined to their cages, these animals had become spiritless.
Even the sight of food did not see to excite them much.
My brother and I were then spending our holidays in an estate where our father was
employed. In the afternoons, my brother, who loves fishing, and I would go out to catch

Wherever the water was shallow, we got down into the streams and searched for holes

or drinking inside. We enforce the no food and drinks rule very strictly. This
is because we want to keep the place spotlessly clean.
Dont worry, sir. Well make sure we dont bring any food inside the
museum. What about children? Ive been told they must be accompanied by
adults. Is that true?
Well, children under eight must be accompanied by an adult. This is to make
sure that they will behave when they are inside.

Ecotourism

Ecotourism is the opposite of mass tourism.

People travel to remote areas and visit faraway
places without destroying
or ruining the environment. Ecotourism is
intended for small groups of tourists who want to
learn more about nature in a certain area and help
people who live there. Eco tourists travel to places
where plant and animal life is the main attraction.
They want to know more about how people live
side by side in a natural habitat.
Ecotourism makes people aware of how beautiful the land and countryside is. Local tour guides show visitors how
important our environment is. They know how the region has developed over time. Tourists stay in small local
houses, as opposed to gigantic hotel complexes in mass tourism regions.
Other aims of ecotourism are

helping conserve nature in a faraway place

educating tourists about the place they are travelling to

respecting the culture of people who live there

the conservation of animal and plant species that are in danger of becoming extinct

minimizing the impact of tourism in the area

helping people who live there

leaving a small carbon footprint

Ecotourism started out in the 1970s as an alternative to mass tourism. Today it is one of the fastest
growing sectors of the tourism industry because more and more people are becoming aware of it. As a result, some
countries are using ecotourism to gain money and profits. In some areas, it is operated by foreign investors who
are only interested in their own profits. Bringing too many people to a remote place could, however, damage local
culture.
