screen to install the software. Installation and un-installation require Administrator rights.
The following prerequisites are to be installed depending on your system environment:
MSXML 6 32- bit and 64-bit

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable 32- bit and 64-bit
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable 32- bit and 64-bit
Microsoft .NET 4.0

PaperPort installation comprises six elements that are installed in a single installation process:
PaperPort program (also includes ImageViewer, ScanDirect and Scanner Setup Wizard)

Nuance PDF Viewer Plus 7.1

PDF Create 7.1 (only in PaperPort Professional)
PaperPort Image Printer 14
Nuance Cloud Connector (optional component)
PaperPort Anywhere

PDF Viewer Plus is not installed if the top-line Nuance product PDF Converter Professional is
detected on the computer (version 7.1 or above) because it provides all the functionality of PDF
Viewer Plus 7.1, and much more additionally.
If you have downloaded the product, the executable will extract the content to your hard drive and
launch the product executable. In case of installing from storage media, such as a DVD-ROM,
launch the AutoRun executable from the media root.
Select an installation language if offered, accept or change the program target location. The
program location must be a local folder on your computer.
After installing prerequisites you need to provide a destination folder, defaulted to C:\Program
Files\Nuance, provide customer information and serial number. The following additional
checkmarks are presented on this form:
Set Nuance PDF as your default viewer for Windows and Internet Explorer
This sets PDF Viewer Plus as your system default PDF viewer. PDF files on the PaperPort
desktop are by default opened in a Nuance PDF product. If you select this option, PDF files
that are double-clicked anywhere on your system will open in PDF Viewer Plus. To later
modify these settings on a Windows XP, you can go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs
and select Change for Nuance PDF Viewer Plus. On Windows Vista and Windows 7 it is only
possible by launching the installer of Nuance PDF Viewer Plus. If you do not have an existing
PDF file type association already configured in the system, the checkmark is checked in by
default.
Install all Nuance PDF button and menu application add-ins
This places a Nuance PDF ribbon or toolbar in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,
Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and Corel WordPerfect, allowing PDF Create to make
PDF files from the current document or mail attachments or web pages. To later enable or
disable these add-ins individually on a Windows XP, you can go to Control Panel,
Add/Remove programs and select Change for PDF Create. On Windows Vista and Windows
7 it is only possible only by launching the installer of PDF Create.
AutoRun launches the installers of the software components. PaperPort installer offers a
Compete or a Custom installation. Choose Custom only if you want to add your own folders to the
supplied PaperPort Desktop folders during installation.
AutoRun installer provides the following additional installation settings (checkboxes):
Create PaperPort Icon on the Desktop
It will place PaperPort program icon on the desktop of the actual logged in user.
Enable Windows Context Menu within PaperPort Context Menu
This is an option only in the Professional version of PaperPort, turned on by default. This will
allow Windows Context menu items to appear and to be invoked directly from PaperPort for
the selected PaperPort files and folders.

Activating PaperPort
Most versions of PaperPort 14 require activation. For activation and deactivation you need web
access. You will be invited to activate the product at the end of installation. Choose from
automatic or manual activation. The recommended choice is automatic. Provided that your serial
number is found at its storage location and has been correctly entered, no user interaction is
required and no personal information is transmitted. Manual activation requires interaction.
If you do not activate the product at installation time, you will be invited to do this each time you
invoke the program. PaperPort 14 can be launched only five times without activation.
Activating PaperPort 14 on a computer without an established Internet connection
If you install PaperPort 14 on a computer without an Internet connection, when you launch
PaperPort, the activation wizard will appear. PaperPort can be activated if there is a separate
machine that is connected to the Internet. Select the manual activation option. The serial number
and the machine fingerprint will appear. Go to the website http://activation.scansoft.com/us/ on
the machine with an Internet connection; enter your product serial number and computer
fingerprint to generate an activation key. Write down the activation key that is generated, return to
the machine without the Internet connection and enter the activation key into the manual
activation dialog.
Upgrading from PaperPort 14 to PaperPort 14 Professional
Before installing PaperPort 14 Professional, uninstall the following components from your
computer:
Nuance PaperPort 14

Nuance PDF Viewer Plus 7.1

PaperPort Image Printer 14
Nuance Cloud Connector
PaperPort Anywhere

Invalid serial number message when activating PaperPort

If an Invalid serial number message appears during activation, the serial number may have
been keyed improperly or it could be an invalid serial number. Refer to the serial number on the
back of the DVD-ROM sleeve to ensure that all characters were entered in the proper order. If
PaperPort was ordered as a download, the serial number should appear in the confirmation
email.
For additional help, go to the following website: http://activation.scansoft.com/us/help/
Registering PaperPort 14
At the end of installation, you will be asked to fill out an electronic form to register your copy of
PaperPort 14. If you decide not to, you will be prompted again seven days later. The registration
process will navigate you to http://register.nuance.com.
Uninstalling PaperPort
For a full uninstallation, all three PaperPort components should be removed one after the other.
The components are as follows:
PaperPort Anywhere

Nuance Cloud Connector (optional component)

PDF Create 7.1 (only in PaperPort Professional)
Nuance PDF Viewer Plus 7.1
PaperPort Image Printer 14
Nuance PaperPort 14

Removing only one or more of the following components: Image Printer, PDF Viewer Plus or PDF
Create will cause PaperPort to function incorrectly.
For example (and not limited to the following functionalities): PDF Viewer affects FormTyper, PDF
Create affects the save and combine to PDF functionality in PaperPort.
To uninstall PaperPort from your computer:
1. Select Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs) from the Control Panel.
2. Select Nuance PaperPort 14.
3. Click Remove to uninstall the program.
4. Repeat this for the remaining components.
5. A computer restart might be needed to complete the removal.
A deactivation step is performed at the start of uninstallation, allowing you to reinstall the program
later without reactivation problems. Deactivation and reactivation require web access.
Note
Uninstalling Nuance Cloud Connector will remove the cloud drive from the system, so cloud
content is no longer available. Files that were not yet synchronized at time of uninstall with cloud
storage providers may be lost.
Failed uninstallation
Should the uninstallation of PaperPort 14 or PDF Viewer Plus fail for any reason, you can clean
up your system from all references to these products by using our Remover.exe application.
This application can be found on the PaperPort product DVD-ROM in the folder
PaperPort\Utility (for PaperPort 14) or in the PDFCreate\Tools folder (for PDF Create).
After running this utility, reboot the machine and the component will be uninstalled.
Note
On a machine with restricted user rights, log into the machine with administrator rights before
running this utility.
Launch PaperPort
You should launch the main PaperPort application at least once after installation, before
attempting to use other PaperPort applications, such as Image Viewer or ScanDirect.

Cloud connection
PaperPort Anywhere (paperport.com)
PaperPort Anywhere (powered by OfficeDrop) features a sychronization component that is
installed with PaperPort. It will not sychronize files or folders to PaperPort Anywhere
(paperport.com) unless you first create an account and then direct which folders you want to be
added to PaperPort Anywhere by using Sync Folder.
See the terms and conditions for details on account usage via the sign up screen or at
http://www.paperport.com. You may uninstall this component through the Windows Program
Add/Remove Control Panel at anytime without affecting normal PaperPort operation.
Sign on and folder synchronization features can be accessed within the PaperPort desktop
application in the upper right hand corner of the PaperPort desktop, from the PaperPort program
group in the Windows Start menu and also from the system tray when the component is running.
The synchronization component is configured to start after logon to the system and every
subsequent restart of Windows.

Once synchronized folders and files are automatically transferred between your local desktop and
cloud storage. Cloud content can be searched and accessed via the web and mobile devices.
Mobile applications can be found in the Apple App store for iPhone and iPad and in the Android
App store.
If you do not have a PaperPort Anywhere account yet, it can be created via user interface on your
local computer or online through the PaperPort Anywhere website: http://www.paperport.com.
PaperPort Anywhere accounts can be upgraded to PaperPort Anywhere Professional and
Premium account for more storage and additional features. Additional frequently asked questions
(FAQs) are available once you sign into your account at http://www.paperport.com.
Nuance Cloud Connector
If installed, the Nuance Cloud Connector component (powered by Gladinet) is started on first
PaperPort launch. After the first PaperPort launch, this component will automatically start after
system logon. This component can be installed and uninstalled later. Configuration of this
component is possible from Start menu and appears in the the system tray as well. Nuance Cloud
Connector creates an dedicated drive in the operating system, that will be automatically
recognized by PaperPort desktop application. The drive letter is N: by default or it can be
configured to any other drive letters in configuration.
The CloudConnector can connect to a number of cloud provider services like Windows Live
SkyDrive and Google Docs. Each connection has to be set up and configured individually through
Mount Virtual Directory wizard, which is available from Nuance Cloud Connector Management
Console and if configured it can appear as a One-Click-Mount link at the root of the mapped
drive.
Nuance Cloud Connector synchronizes its local content with the cloud service providers when
active. The synchronization requires Internet connection and the service provider to be available
at time of synchronization.
Synchronization is initiated by creating, deleting or modifying files or folders locally or at the cloud
provider. Each cloud service provider connection appear as a separate folder under the local
NuanceCloudConnector drive. Note that synchronization starts shortly after modifications and
cloud providers may change or convert the files once they are uploaded. PaperPort specific
hidden files are not synchronized.
Uninstalling Nuance Cloud Connector removes the drive from the system that may cause the loss
of unsynchronized data.
Nuance Cloud Connector can be upgraded by a professional licence to enable Professional
features.
Evernote Client
PaperPort Send To Link bar is extended with an Evernote link to be able to upload and download
attached documents. Evernote connection can be configured through the Send To Link Bar.

Scanner Support
Install your scanner before you install PaperPort 14
Your scanner must be working independently of the program prior to connecting it to PaperPort
14. Scanners to be used by PaperPort 14 should be installed according to the scanner
manufacturers specifications. Consult the documentation that came with your scanner for
information.
TWAIN and WIA drivers
PaperPort 14 supports scanners that are controlled by TWAIN or WIA (Windows Image
Acquisition) scanner drivers. PaperPort 14 supports any fully TWAIN- or WIA-compliant scanner
or other input device that can supply at least a binary (black-and-white) image in a supported
resolution (200 to 600 dpi). The recommended maximum scan resolution is 400 dpi.
If any scanning problem occurs with PaperPort, first test whether you are able to scan into
another scanner-enabled imaging application. Use the Windows Paint application to test WIA,
and any imaging application from some other vendor to test TWAIN.
ISIS drivers
In addition to scanning via TWAIN or WIA, PaperPort 14 also supports ISIS-scanning.
If any scanning problem occurs with PaperPort, first test whether you are able to scan into
another ISIS supported application.
Scanner Setup Wizard
PaperPort 14 includes a Scanner Setup Wizard that will automatically test and optimize your
scanner for use with PaperPort 14. You can find its shortcut next to that of PaperPort 14 in the
Windows Start menu. You can also launch it at any time by choosing the Select button on the
Scan or Get Photo pane (Scan Settings on the Desktop ribbon). The Scanner Setup Wizard is
launched automatically after installation when you first attempt to scan. This ensures that your
scanner is optimized before you start scanning documents.
Using more than one scanner in PaperPort
If you have more than one scanner installed on your computer, you may use the Scanner Setup
Wizard to use those scanners with PaperPort. Select button on the Scan or Get Photo pane
(Scan Settings on the Desktop ribbon).
Scanner compatibility
Since scanners change frequently, refer to http://support.nuance.com/compatibility for the latest
information about PaperPort and scanner compatibility. If you are having issues with your
scanner, contact the scanner manufacturer for assistance. Most scanner manufacturers have web
sites that provide the latest scanner drivers, FAQs and other information about their products.

Known issues
Installation
PaperPort 14 does not support Citrix or Windows Terminal Services (WTS) environments and the
installation on Shared Network Drives.
Note
Do not set troubleshooting or compatibility mode for the Paprport.exe.
Known issues with PDF image editing in PDF Viewer Plus

Editing an image in PDF files in ImageViewer has some limitations; this has been primarily
designed for simple image-only PDF files. More complex PDF files may yield unexpected results.
If you do not know the origin of your PDF file and you get unexpected results when editing
images embedded in a PDF, it is a complex PDF with image effects already applied.
In PDF Viewer, selecting an area of an image and choosing Edit Image is not working.
Instead, you should select the whole image and double-click it to initiate the image
editing of the embedded image in question.
PDF files with overlapping objects are not supported for image editing.

When a clipping path is applied to an image (in order to hide portions of the image while
displaying), after editing the clipping path is lost and the entire image will be displayed.
For PDF files with certain image transformation matrixes, the image editing operation
might result in improperly updated or rotated images in the PDF file.

Features not supported in Image View/ImageViewer but supported in PDF Viewer Plus
Primary PDF viewer application in PaperPort is PDF Viewer Plus. The following is a list of
features supported only in PDF Viewer Plus
Stamps are displayed as Draft in PDF file after changing the file in ImageViewer. This is
not prepared to handle other than its standard stamps.
Protection of annotation checkbox is unmarked after saving changes in ImageViewer.
Protection of annotation is supported only in PDF Viewer Plus, this feature will not be
loaded or preserved in ImageViewer.
Use of Annotations on PDF files
If you intend to use annotations on PDF files of any kind we suggest doing so in the new
PDF Viewer Plus. The annotations in the Image View and ImageViewer are primarily to
add text or notes to image files. Annotations on images (jpg, bmp, etc.) will become
permanently applied to the image.
PDF Converter Professional 7.1
When using PDF Converter Professional 7.1, image editing is started in a slightly different way
than in PDF Viewer. Instead of the Select Image tool, use the "Touch-up Object" tool to select
the object. Then the shortcut menu will offer Edit image.
Editing and saving certain files (DOC, XLS) will relocate the thumbnail on the PaperPort
Desktop
Some applications may create temporary files at time of save resulting in the thumbnail moved to
the end of the order by PaperPort.
The following features of PaperPort are not available with Office 2010 64-bit:
Desktop delivery, email polling.

Outlook 2010 email link

PaperPort Printer Add-in

Quattro Pro issue after OmniPage OCR in PaperPort.

This known issue occurs if you send spreadsheet PDF files to Quattro Pro X3/X4 using Excel
2003 file format, then open these files in OmniPage Page Image Editor and draw a table zone.
Lotus Notes
Some Lotus Notes clients in a Windows 7 environment require configuration of Lotus program
folder security settings for the current user according to new operating system security
regulations.
PaperPort functions affected:
Drag and Drop files to Lotus Notes on Send To Bar

Deliver files from your email folder from Lotus Notes with DesktopDelivery

MAX file support and conversion

Nuance Communications recommends that you use PDF instead of MAX file format. MAX files
generated by PaperPort 10 or above are supported in read-only mode for viewing purposes only.
To be able to edit MAX files, you need to convert them to PDF first. MAX files generated by Asian
versions of PaperPort are not supported.
The MAX to PDF converter tool helps you to find and convert MAX files on your computer to PDF
format. The converter is located in the Start menu next to the PaperPort application or can be
accessed among the program files named cvmaxpdf.exe.
