What is the relationship between craters, calderas,

vents, and magma?
Crater- is around the vent and is a bowl shaped
depression
Vents- opening where lave erupts through
Calderas- are like craters but much larger
depressions
Magma- what erupts from volcano
How does a crater lake form? (words and pictures)
It forms as a result of many volcanic eruptions

What two factors does a volcanos appearance

depend upon?
Type of Material and Type of Eruptions that occur
What characteristics vary among volcanoes?
Size, shape, and composition

How do the volcanoes compare in terms of size and

slope?
Smallest are cinder cone and they also have the
steepest slopes. Shield volcanoes have the gentlest
slopes.
What factors cause differences in size and slope?
Different kinds of materials that make up each
volcano, the vegetation, local climate, eruptive
history.
What is tephra?
Rock fragments thrown into the air during a volcanic
eruption
What is a pyroclastic flow?
Violent volcanic eruptions can send clouds of ash,
gas, and other tephras down slopes at incredible
speeds. This is pyroclastic flow.
Where are most volcanoes found?
Most volcanoes form at plate boundaries.
Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific
Belt and the Mediterranean Belt where convergent
volcanism occur and (2) the Hawaiian Emperor Volcanic
Chain.

How do hotspots form?

Unusually hot regions of Earths mantle where high
temperatures plumes of mantle material rise
toward the surface
What do hotspots tell us about tectonic plates?
