BatStateU ARASOF conducts K-12 grading system seminar

The basic education offered by Batangas State University ARASOF has started implementing the K-12
program as classes opened this school year 2012-2013 in line with the nationwide enforcement of the
Department of Education. However, as a state university, it is under the provisions of the Commission
on Higher Education, thus, BatStateU ARASOF is not included in the list of DepEd Batangas Divisions list
of schools. In effect, elementary and high school teachers of the said university do not receive
memoranda, and other information and policies from the agency. Also, they were not sent invitations
to seminars and workshops conducted recently to train teachers on the implementation of the K-12
curriculum. Thus, at the start of the school year, they were not that ready yet to teach under the new
K-12 curriculum.
Despite these problems, BatStateU ARASOF teachers and administrators find their own ways to be
trained and to understand the ins and outs of the new curriculum. Just recently, the universitys College
of Teacher Education Laboratory School conducted a seminar on the grading system, level of
assessment and selection of honor pupils and students under the K-12 basic education curriculum. This
was held on December 11 at the CECS seminar room. The said seminar were participated not just by
elementary and high school teachers, but also of the college instructors teaching general education
subjects, as well as 3rd year and 4th year Bachelor of Elementary and Bachelor of Secondary Education
students of the university and other neighboring schools.
As an introduction, the Executive Director of BatStateU ARASOF, Assoc. Prof. Enrico M. Dalangin gave
an overview of the K-12 curriculum and its impact to higher education.
The organizers invited speakers from the DepEd Divisions Office to discuss the different levels of
assessment and grading system for different subjects.

Students will not be taught and assessed on the aspect of knowledge alone, but also on other aspects
of learning such as the skills and the products, said Mr. David M. Nuay, OIC-Assistant Schools Division
Superintendent. He added that its not just their memory skills to be tested, but their understanding;
not just the what, but the how and the why.
Ngayon sa K-12, kung sino ang madaldal, sya ang magaling. Kung sinong magaling pagpaliwanag, sya
ang makikitang nakakaintindi, he added.
Other speakers were Mrs. Matdarena G. Marasigan, Bauan East District Supervisor for English and
Filipino, Mrs. Adela F. Aguila, Educational Program Supervisor 1- Science for Science, and Mrs.
Gertrudes L. Malabanan, EPS 1-Guidance for Araling Panlipunan, Values Education, and MAPEH.
In closing, Mrs. Malabanan discussed the selection of honor students and pupils on the K-12 curriculum.
This seminar gave light to the clouded minds of the laboratory school teachers of BatStateU ARASOF as
regards to the new way of assessing the learning and understanding of their students under the new
curriculum. Asst. Prof. Gregoria L. Bacit, Senior Head of the CTE Laboratory School promised that they
will continue to find ways towards faculty development to be able to cope with the continuous change
of the education system, and provide quality education to their students.

I consider this event newsworthy primarily because of its timeliness. The K-12 program, though
has been implemented for a couple of months now, still remains to be an issue that is
continuously being talked about today, specially of the different sectors and stakeholders
directly involved in the big change in the system. Aside from this, I also find the event
significant and it creates a big impact to the members of the academe, and the students that
they serve.

3. Readability of the Technical Paper
Interest in integrated coastal management (ICM) processes has increased throughout Southeast Asia,
and in the Philippines especially, as reflected by increased donor funding and published literature (Tobey
and Volk 2001; Christie 20o1; Olsen and Christie 2000). It is estimated that the World Bank alone will
have invested nearly $ 500 million USD in ICM initiatives for the period 1996-2004 (Tobey and Volk 2001;
Olsen and Christie 2000). This funding is critical to the implementation of ICM in developing countries
where national budgets are already strained. However, this dependence on external financial technical
support makes it all more important for foreign aid projects to be designed with sustainability criteria in
mind so that participating countries are able to sustain project activities following the termination of
external funding. This paper shares information from a recent study evaluating the success sustainability
of integrated coastal management activities in the Philippines, using the World Bank Central Visayas
Regional Project (CVRP) as a case study.

4. Layout of the Leaflet
In general, I can say that the leaflet produced by UNICEF
(http://www.influenzaresources.org/files/EAP_1497_FluWise_Flyer.pdf) has followed the principles of
good layout discussed in Module 5. To elaborate, the following are the characteristics I found present in
the sample leaflet:
-

The cover of the page is eye-catching because of its color, picture, and font size and font type.
Also, the picture is a cartoon, which makes it effective considering that the intended audience
are the children.
Big illustrations are used, thus, emphasizing the important details of the text. The pictures are
also pictures of people in action, enabling readers to imagine and have a clearer visualization of
the important points.
It has headings, subheads, and pictures.
The texts are short, and greyness of the page is avoided.
Pictures included are all related to each other, and are consistent with the colors, characters,
and sizes.
No picture was put across folds, thus no picture was distorted.
