Case 3

Population: Seventh semester pre-service English teachers, private university in Bogota. Number of students: 28
students (14 young women and 14 young men). Age: 19 to 22 years old.

Classroom characteristics: The room is comfortable and looks neat. Equipment and internet available at times. Circle
Arrangement. Classes are from 6:00 am to 6:45 a.m. They study two times a week: Mondays and Fridays. Most
students have taken pedagogy and didactics classes. They are technology enthusiasts. Students are eager to try
innovating projects.

Language level: Students can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly
encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area
where the language is spoken. They can produce a simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal
interest. They can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and
explanations for opinions and plans.

In this lesson, students explore how magazines are
developed to reach specific target markets. They begin
with a class discussion about consumer magazines, and
deconstruct magazines they have brought to class. In
groups, students will learn about the publishing
industry by assuming the roles of editors, writers,
marketing staff and graphic designers to create a
magazine geared to adolescents, young parents or
seniors, taking to account the specifics experiences and
events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and explanations
for opinions and plans.

ASSESSMENT
They will design the development of training for teachers
following the basic steps that are being raised, and that this
same process is an example of how it should be implemented a
teaching strategy based on problem-based learning approach
including with use of digital literacy.

EXPECTATIONS/OUTCOME
It is expected to provide clear tools for the teaching population,
enabling them to exploit the potential of ICT to give life to
environments inclusive learning developed under the guidelines
of
problem-based
learning
and
production-oriented
educational resources digital open conceived, developed and
validated through interaction in learning communities.
Outcomes
Students will:

Demonstrate understanding of the ways in which


magazines, their sponsors and their advertisers target and
attract audiences
Adapt messages for different audiences and explain how
the characteristics of media forms and audiences influence
production decisions and shape content
Select and use the conventions of magazine publishing and
appropriate techniques to produce a magazine
Practice appropriate research and information handling and
processing skills, including locating, analyzing, evaluating
and communicating information from a variety of print and
non-print sources
Practice specific skills involved in reading (locating key
words, skimming and scanning, etc.), writing (a variety of
literary forms including formal and personal essay, poetry,
short story, report, etc.), listening, speaking, viewing and
visual expression.

LESSON AIM OR OBJECTIVE

LESSON 1

STAGES AND MAIN PROCEDURES

Teacher will explain to students that theyre


now going to assume the role of a small
publishing company. Theyve develop a

concept for a new magazine and have to


sell their concept to advertiser.

Divide the class into three groups


and distribute a magazine overview
to each group.
Mention the topic that they need to
develop.
Within each group, one person will
act as editor-in-chief and one person
as an assistant. All group members
are expected to contribute to the
magazine, but the editor and his/her
assistant will make final decisions
regarding layout, content, etc.
Decide on the individual articles
each member will write. Each article
should be approximately 500- 750
words and the author takes a define
stance on the topic to be investigated
(e.g., Teen Diets: Nutrition or Junk
Food?)
