OVERVIEW:
TheoverallstructureoftheIIFTexamunderwentsomechangesthisyearvisavisthestructurelastyear.InIIFT2015,theDataInterpretation
sectionwasclubbedwiththeLogicalReasoningsection,unlikeinIIFT2014,wheretheDataInterpretationsectionhadbeenclubbedwiththe
QuantitativeAbilitysection.Thenumberofquestionsalsoregisteredanincreasefrom118in2014to124in2015.
Theoveralllevelofdifficultylevelofthequestionsintheexamwassignificantlylowerascomparedtothatofthepreviousyearsexam.Mostof
thequestionswereeasytomediumlevelsofdifficulty.
Theanalysisofeachofthesectionsisgivenbelow.
LOGICALREASONINGDATAINTERPRETATION
ThissectionwascharacterizedbysimpleandstraightforwardLogicalReasoningquestionsandsomewhattimeconsumingDataInterpretation
questions.Therewere20questionsonLogicalReasoningand18questionsonDataInterpretation(2setsof5questionseachand2setsof4
questionseachfortheDataInterpretationsubsection).QuestionsintheLogicalReasoningsubsectionweredominatedbyquestionson
Arrangements(total2setswith10questionsinall).Additionally,intheLogicalReasoningsubsection,therewerequestionsonNetwork
diagrams,Grouping&ConditionalitiesandVerbalReasoning.OnequestionpertainingtoGrouping&Conditionalitieswasambiguous.
Ideallyoneshouldhaveattempted2224questionsinabout40minutes.StudentsshouldhaveideallyattemptedmostoftheLRQuestions.The
expectedcutoffforthesectionisaround1011marks.
VERBALABILITY&ReadingComprehension:
TheVARCsectionconsistedoftwosubsections,withthe16RCquestionscarrying1markeach,whilethe20VAquestionscarried0.75marks
each.Thissectionwasmostlyveryeasy,andprovidedampleopportunitiestoscore.ThevastmajorityoftheRCquestionsweredirect,andeven
theinferentialoneswerestraightforward.Therewerefourpassageswith4questionseach.Twoofthepassageswereverysimple,andshould
definitelyhavebeenattempted.WhiletheRCpassageswereonthelongside(1.5pageslongeach),asiscommonintheIIFT,theywereallfairly
easytounderstand.OnlyacoupleofRCquestionsweresomewhattricky.TheVAquestionswerealsosimilarlyquiteeasy,thoughtherewerea
smallhandfulthatyoumighthavehadtroublewith,suchasthequestionsthataskedyoutoidentifytheoxymorons,ortheonesthataskedthe
meaningofFrenchwordsusedinEnglish.OutofthetwoJumbledParagraphquestions,onlyonewassomewhattricky.Theotherquestion
typesCorrectmeaningofidiom/phrase,inappropriateuseoftheword,fillintheblanks,analogiesandantonymswereveryeasyandprovided
ampleopportunitiestoscore.TheVAquestionsshouldnothavetakenmorethan15minutestoattempttwooftheRCpassagescouldeasily
havebeensolvedin1520minutes,orperhapsthreein2025minutes.Consideringthedifferenceinmarksbetweenthetwosubsections,itwould
havemademoresensetotrytoattemptmoreRCquestionsratherthanfocusingtoomuchonVA.Onthewhole,ifyoudevotedaround35
minutestotheVARCsection,youcouldhaveattemptedaround1015VAquestionsand812RCquestions.Theexpectedcutoffforthis
sectionis810marks.
GENERALAWARENESS
TheGKsectionthisyearwaseminentlydoableascomparedtothatofpreviousyears.Therewere28questionsintotalcomprising19staticand9
currenteventsquestions.Furthermore,outofthe28questions,23questionswereonworldaffairsandonly5onnationalevents.Therewerea
fewMatchtheColumnquestionswhichwereeasybecauseidentifyingonlyonecorrectpairwouldhavegivenyoutheanswer.However,the
Currenteventquestionspertainingtonationaleventswerequitedifficultasitaskedforanswersintermsofnumbers.Fortunatelytherewere
onlytwoquestionsofthistype.Thethemesofthequestionsweremostlyonbusiness,science(inventor),headquartersandappointmentswitha
couplefromGeographyandHistory.Onthewhole,ifyoudevotedaround1820minutestotheGKsection,youcouldhaveattemptedaround
1820questions.Theexpectedcutoffforthissectionisexpectedtobearound34marksconsideringthefactthateachquestioncarries0.5
marks.
QUANTITATIVEABILITY
Therewere22questionsintheQuantitativeAbilitysection.ThissectionwasdominatedbyModernMathematics(8questions)andArithmetic(7
questions).ThequestionsonModernMathematicsinvolvedquestionspertainingmainlytoProbability,Permutation&Combination,
Progressions,LogarithmsandSetTheory.ThequestionsonArithmeticweremainlyonPercentages,Time&Work,AveragesandMixtures.The
remainingquestionswereonGeometry(3questions),Algebra(3questions)andNumbers(SurdsandIndices).
Mostofthequestionswereeasytomediumlevelofdifficulty.Someofthequestionsrequiredsomewhatlengthycalculations.Anumberof
questionswereamenabletooptionelimination.
Ideallyoneshouldhaveattempted1820questionsinabout40minutes.Theexpectedcutoffforthesectionwouldbearound78marks.
WeexpectthecutoffforIIFTDelhicampustobeabout4850marksandforIIFTCalcuttacampustobeabout4548marks.(Note:Usuallythesum
ofoverallIIFTcutoffissignificantlymorethanthesumofindividualsectionwisecutoffs.Beststrategywouldbetoscoreatleastenoughtoclearthe
cutoffsofallsectionsandmaximisethescoreinthesectionofyourstrength).
