INTRODUCTION

Costumes of Kashmir are known for their embroidery and elaborate detailed
designs.

They reflect the beauty and richness of the culture.

Most common materials used for the garments are of wool, silk and cotton with
detailed and beautiful embroidery.

4. TRADITIONAL KASHMIRI FASHION

The Phiran and Poots is the traditional outfit for both men and women in
Kashmir.

The Phiran and Poots are two gowns one worn on the other.

The traditional Phiran and Poots are floor-length and dont have side slits

5. COSTUMES OF KASHMIRI WOMEN

The Pheran is an important attire for the Kashmiri women.

The Pheran worn by women usually has embroidery on it.

Ladies prefer wearing suit and Burgha in summer and Pheran in


autumn.

Womans costumes in Kashmir are further enhanced by the use of


various accessories.

They use ornaments like earrings, anklets and bangles on top of


clothing.

Silver jewellery is very popular in Muslim women, and they beautify


themselves with the help of silver neck pieces, bracelets and chains.

6. WOMEN PHERAN

Both Hindu and Muslim women in Kashmir wear Phiran.

Hindu women wear long, floor length, narrow sleeved Pherans.


Muslim women wear long broad sleeved knee length Pherans with pockets

7. COSTUMES OF KASHMIRI MEN.

Both Hindu and Muslim men in Kashmir wear Pheran, a long loose
gown hanging down below their knees.

Muslim men wear a skullcap and close-fitting Shalwar and pandits wear
Churidar Pyjama.

The traditional Hindu male garment Pheran is always plain and has
narrow sleeves.

Fur skull caps with the Pashmina shawls worn by men often symbolize
royalty or is considered as a status symbol .

8. MEN PHIRAN
The Phiran is a typical dress of a Kashmir man both Hindu
and Muslim.
It is long, loose and hangs below the knees.
They pair up a Phiran with shalwar or chudidar pyjama.

9.KASHMIRI EMBROIDERY

Kashmiri design, with its traditional name Kashidakari, is one of the


most popular traditional embroideries in India.

We find Kashmiri embroidery on woollen garments, especially shawls


and some cotton salwar suits, on carpets, which are world famous

Crewel embroidery(aari)
Needle point embroidery(sozni)
Silver & gold embroidery(tilla)

11. CREWEL EMBROIDERY(AARI)

This is done using a pointed crochet (locally called Aari).


Crewel embroidery uses woollen or silk thread for embroidery.
It is used for embroidery work on cotton, velvet, linen and jute fabrics
