Answer guide for O Level Chemistry (5070/3) – Paper 3 Practical Test June 1999

Question 1 (14 marks)

Accuracy (8 marks)
For the two best titres:
4 marks for a value within 0.2 cm3 of supervisor
2 marks for a value within 0.3 cm3 of supervisor
1 mark for a value within 0.4 cm3 of supervisor

Concordance (3 marks)
3 marks if all the ticked values are within 0.2 cm3
2 marks if all the ticked values are within 0.3 cm3
1 mark if all the ticked values are within 0.4 cm3

Average (1 mark)
Give 1 mark if the candidate calculates a correct average (error not greater than 0.05) of all
ticked values.

(b) concentration of sodium hydroxide, in mol/dm3 (2 marks)

Assuming a 25 cm3 pipette and a titre of 24.0 cm3

conc of NaOH = 24.0 x 0.1 (1)

25.0
= 0.0960 (1)
(correct to 0.0001)

Tests on Solution R

Test Acceptable alternatives Unacceptable alternatives

Test 1 + NaOH
3 marks
white ppt (1)
both ppt and colour substance, particles, deposit,
allow solid, suspension, residue, sediment, gelatinous,
in excess powder insoluble etc.

soluble in xs (1) ppt dissolves, turns clear partially soluble, partially

insoluble
colourless solution forms a colourless solution (2)
(1) solution turns colourless (1)

cloudy = (0), cloudy clears =

(1)
Test 2 + NH3
3 marks
white ppt (1) as Test 1 as Test 1

in excess

soluble in xs (1)

colourless solution
(1)
Test 3 + KI
1 mark

no reaction solution remains clear or no gas evolved

colourless any suggestion of a reaction
loses this mark
Test 4 + H2SO4

Tests on Solution S

Test 1 + NaOH
2 marks

blue ppt (1) both colour and ppt required

in excess

insoluble in xs (1)
Test 2 + NH3
3 marks
blue ppt (1) as Test 1

in excess

soluble in xs (1)
forms a dark blue solution (2) candidates who miss the initial
solution turns dark blue (1) ppt and only note the dark blue
dark blue solution solution can only score one
(1) solution must be darker or
deeper than blue
Test 3 + KI
2 marks

white ppt (1) allow a range of pale colours for not brown or red for ppt
ppt
brown solution (1)
brown or red
colour must be linked to
solution, not turns brown
Test 4 + H2SO4
1 mark

no reaction (1) stays blue or turns blue, ignore

dilution effect but not turns
colourless
