The following is a brief background sketch of Dr. Jeffrey D. Kamlet. Supporting materials for each
issue are attached and can be viewed using the expandable navigation panel on the left-hand side
of this PDF. In crafting any message based on the contents of this document always rely solely on
the attached supporting materials. If you have any questions, would like the information in an
alternative format, or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.
In 2002, Kamlets wife filed for divorce. Based on the docket, the divorce appears
to have been contentious, with more than 200 entries on the docket, including the
issuance of a restraining order. It is unclear who the restraining order was placed
against since these documents are not available online, however, they can likely
be obtained through a public records request, if needed.

Body
Oct 03, 2016( SaintPetersBlog: http://saintpetersblog.com/ Delivered by Newstex) The United for Care campaign is
hitting the airwaves. The group behind the medical marijuana ballot initiative recently filmed its first advertisement
and is expected to release it this week.
The 30-second spot features a Miami Beach doctor talking about the benefits of Amendment 2. 'Mypatients are
fighting cancer, epilepsy and other diseases. Right now, to ease those patients'pain and suffering, physicians
prescribe opiates and other dangerous narcotics that have significant risk,'says Dr. Jeff Kamlet, a practicing internal
and addiction medicine[1] specialist in the advertisement. 'Amendment 2 will allow me to legally recommend all safe
and effective treatments, including medical marijuana, to patients who are suffering. 'Yeson 2' means I can offer
compassionate, effective care and get my patients the help they need.'Kamlet has been a supporter of the
amendment, writing an op-ed in 2014[2] backing it. In it, Kamlet said doctors 'shouldbe allowed to recommend
medical marijuana to their patients suffering from debilitating conditions without interference from politicians.'The oped went on to say 'sickFloridians should not have to put their own freedom at risk in order to secure medicine they
need to dramatically improve their quality of life.'The 2014 amendment received 58 percent support, just shy of the
60 percent needed to become law. The current proposal allows people with debilitating medical conditions, as
determined by a licensed Florida physician, to use medical marijuana. The amendment defines a debilitating
condition as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, and post-traumatic stress disorder, among other things. In a
fundraising email to supporters this weekend, the organization said 'thanksto our donors and a big new $1 million
donation that came in on Friday, we'restarting TV ads in select markets very shortly. According to the Tampa Bay
Times[3], the ads are expected to air in Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach, Orlando and Jacksonville markets
Records show People United for Medical Marijuana, the fundraising group behind the amendment, raised $222,141
between Sept. 17 and Sept. 23. The committee, records show, spent $104,306 during the same time period. The

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 5:41pm The fate of Amendment 2 will be decided in less than five weeks, but one
group has already released its recommended framework for how a system that regulates medical marijuana would
work.
The 12-member Florida For Care Blue Ribbon Commission, which includes Democrats and Republicans, and
representatives of law enforcement, business, healthcare and other areas, has released proposed principles that
range from patient protection to professional licenses and packaging. It addresses issues like physician
requirements and continuing education, regulations on caregivers and a compassionate use registry.
Former state Sen. Alex Diaz de la Portilla, a Miami Republican, and vice chair of the commission, said he doesn't
plan on voting for the amendment but he joined the group to help devise a plan that would incorporate different views
and assist the legislature in determining safeguards if the amendment passes.
Constitutional amendments need 60 percent of the vote to pass. The polling average of the last major public
surveys shows about 64 percent of Florida voters favor Amendment 2.
"I am against the amendment because I don'think enough research has been done," Diaz de la Portilla said, "but if
the people want it and it passes, then we need to get it right. ... If you have people who are for it and against it, what
comes out is a better, well thought-out plan."
Despite his opposition, Diaz de la Portilla said Republicans and Democrats "have to be open-minded."
The proposal is a "starting point," said the commission'schairman, Jon Mills, who is the Amendment 2 author and a
former speaker of the House.
Mills, who supports the medical marijuana amendment, said the commission'sgoal is to provide information so the
legislature can get a head start after the election.
"The legislature has the important role," of determining the details, Mills said. The commission, with a "wide range
of folks" has been working over the summer to present "credible research" and will present a proposed bill in the
next few weeks.

Commission releases a 'framework'for regulating medical marijuana
If the amendment "were to pass, we want to make sure we have a plan in place and not do anything last-minute,"
Dan Rogers, Florida for Care'sexecutive director, said. "We want the legislature to have a springboard to work
with."
Florida for Care was founded in 2014 to advocate for a well-regulated, Florida medical marijuana system under
Amendment 2, according to the group'swebsite.
The group'sBlue Ribbon Commission also includes Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre; farmer Teena Borek;
addiction specialist Dr. Jeffrey Kamlet; Irv Rosenfeld, a federal medical marijuana patient; and caregiver Robert
Jordan, whose wife Kathy has Lou Gehrig'sdisease and Karen Basha Egozi, CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation of
Florida. If the amendment passes, the commission will sponsor public meetings in November in Miami, Orlando,
Jacksonville and Tallahassee.

A medicinal extract derived from the rain forests of West Africa that sends patients on an introspective addictionbreaking "high" is being hailed by some drug experts as the new miracle treatment for heroin addiction.
Ibogaine has stunned scientists across the world with its apparent ability to break addiction and wipe out withdrawal
symptoms in one day, but the drug is not without its critics.
It is banned in the US and treatment is only available in a handful of countries, South Africa being one of them.
Now local drug expert and Ibogaine specialist Dr Anwar Jeewa is determined to make the treatment more widely
available and push it to the frontline of the country'sbattle against drug addiction.
In 2006 there were reportedly 40 000 heroin addicts in South Africa. Today the number has increased at least five
fold with the proliferation of drugs like "sugars" and "whoonga" which have heroin as their core ingredient.
Jeewa claims Ibogaine can provide salvation for scores of heroin addicts. He came across the drug in 2006 and has
made it central to the treatment of his patients at the Minds Alive rehabilitation centre in Westville which he
oversees.
"It is going to change everything," Jeewa says. "It brings you to your pre-addiction state within one day."
Presently Jeewa'scentre is the only clinic in South Africa using Ibogaine. Since 2006, Jeewa says he has treated
600 patients with only 30 percent of them relapsing.
Ibogaine is created from the inner root bark of the tabernanthe iboga plant which grows in Cameroon and Gabon.
During treatment, symptoms of narcotic withdrawal virtually disappear, and patients report few cravings.
However, Ibogaine, sold in a capsule form, has not received approval from the Food and Drug Administration in the
US. Although approved for clinical trials - tests on people - in the 1990s, problems with financial backing have
hindered development.
Another problem is that Ibogaine is classified as a hallucinogenic drug. However, Jeewa and international experts
on drugs reject this perception.
"It does not cause the patient to hallucinate but instead creates a dream-like state. We call it a 'remogen'drug. The
patient sees visions or dreams while their eyes are closed but when the eyes are open, everything is normal - they
are aware of everything around them.
Cracking cold turkey
"These visions only occur in about 70 percent of users," Jeewa says.
Manufacturers of Ibogaine say the drug is a powerful tool for introspection, leading patients to an understanding of
their addiction and showing them a path out of it. They claim it allows patients to deal with the psychological causes
of their drug-taking behaviour.
Experts say the drug makes patients physically and psychologically receptive to rehabilitation.
"It helps to release repressed memories and emotions. When the person wakes up the day after the treatment they
are able to think better, they feel better," Jeewa says. "Within a day the person is like brand new. It'squite amazing."
While one day'sdosage of Ibogaine may eradicate withdrawal symptoms and cravings, Jeewa says that patients are
not immediately discharged from the clinic.
"We don'trelease a person straight away. When all a person knows is scoring drugs and then suddenly he isn't doing
that any more, it'sa lot to deal with."
Patients take part in a programme that includes counselling and life skills training.
"A great deal of what addiction is, is learnt habit. With Ibogaine the person'smind is clear, he is thinking logically and
rationally and is therefore receptive to rehabilitation it gives us a chance to work with him in unlearning the bad
behaviour and learning new behaviour."
On Thursday, the Sunday Tribune monitored the Ibogaine treatment of a heroin addict at Minds Alive.
Before receiving treatment Sunil (not his real name) complained of excruciating withdrawal symptoms including
severe back pain, hot and cold flushes and watery eyes.
"You can'tsleep because you are restless and when you lie down it hurts," said Sunil who became hooked on
"sugars" six years ago.
Like many sugars addicts Sunil said that he smoked purely to relieve himself of the withdrawal symptoms.
"It'snot even because it feels good. I smoke just to take away the pain - every few hours or so. I'ddo anything for my
fix; if it means I had to rob someone, I'ddo it, although I'dfeel bad about it afterwards."
When the Tribune returned to Minds Alive the following day to get Sunil'sfeedback after his treatment, he reported
that all withdrawal symptoms had disappeared and that for the first time in six years he did not have a craving for
sugars.
Jeewa says he plans to start clinical trials on Ibogaine, in conjunction with medical research bodies.
He says that the benefits of Ibogaine extend to the treatment of other addictions such as cocaine, crystal meth,
alcohol and even nicotine.
"What I like about it is it'snatural and you can'tget addicted to it," he says. "It'snot more widely used because people
are not aware of it and the rehab clinics don'twant to change."
Sam Pillay of the Chatsworth Anti Drug forum says many rehab centres were sceptic about Ibogaine because its
effectiveness had not been clinically proven.
"It is new, it hasn'tbeen tested in the market; there haven'tbeen any clinical trials and, of course, there are legal
issues," Pillay says.
"I haven'tpersonally tried it out on any of my patients, but if it does what they say it can do, I'llbe very excited."
Cracking cold turkey
Pillay says most rehab centres have a success rate of less than 10 percent.
Andreas Pluddermann, a researcher at the South African Medical Research Council, says Ibogaine was the subject
of international controversy and that no testing had been done on it locally.
"Internationally it is not a recognised form of treatment; it'sfar from mainstream. It'snot a banned substance, but it's
not registered medication either," Pluddermann says.
"It is quite controversial there is no real clear evidence, locally at least, showing whether it'seffective or not."
Reservations about Ibogaine often focus on its side effects, the worst and most rare being bradycardia - the slowing
of breathing and heart rate.
About a dozen cases of Ibogaine-related deaths have been documented worldwide but experts say the drug is safe
when administered under medical supervision.
"I attest that this is the most effective addiction-interrupter drug in the history of medicine," says Dr Jeffrey Kamlet of
the American Society of Addiction Medicine, an expert on Ibogaine.
"Ibogaine, given with proper screening and supervision, is almost always effective in preventing withdrawal
symptoms and takes a day to administer.
"Other forms of detoxification are always done with pharmaceutical substitution therapy - using narcotics in tapering
dosages to slowly wean patients off their drug of choice or using sedative hypnotic drugs in a like fashion to prevent
withdrawal, mortality and morbidity. It can take days to weeks to months," says Kamlet.
"Regular detox has a syndrome following detoxification called the PAWS syndrome (post acute withdrawal
syndrome). That means that after detox, it takes months for the cravings to cease and for the client to feel well,"
Kamlet adds.
Kamlet says that Ibogaine has achieved unprecedented success in the treatment of drug addiction.
"In general, with standard detox, only 10 percent are clean at a year and only 1 percent at five years. Yes, only one
out of 100 makes it long-term.
"With Ibogaine it'sas high as 20 to 50 percent, depending on what they do after Ibogaine treatment and what drugs
they were on in the first place," Kamlet says.
Because Ibogaine is not a maintenance drug, Kamlet says pharmaceuticals have been reluctant to back it.
"No pharmaceutical company wants to see a drug come out that people only need once or twice. There is little profit
in it and they like to produce and research drugs that people take every day.
"Big pharma is in business to make money. Not to help mankind," says Kamlet.
"If there was a way for someone to make big profits with Ibogaine, it would be researched because it works much
better then anything I have seen over my 30 years of doing this."

Leading 2 lives: civic leader's rise and hard fall; After Philip Blumberg
descended from civic eminence to a dark side of arrests and addiction,
he told friends: `I am fully to blame for what I've done.'

For at least a decade, Philip Blumberg led two lives, which he kept carefully and completely apart.
There was the Blumberg everyone saw -- the civic leader, the real estate investor, the son who climbed in his
father'sfootsteps to the top of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and then higher. Smart, witty and used to
being in charge, he was scheduled to chair the state'slargest business organization later this year.
Then there was the other Blumberg -- the one arrested for burglary, who had a romance with a chamber staff
member and fathered her child, who grappled with a drug addiction so vicious that one night police found him in his
Chevy TrailBlazer, sweating and naked from the waist down, surrounded by crack cocaine, two bags of marijuana
and open boxes of condoms.
It remains a mystery, possibly even to himself, what relentless demons could drive a man with so much to lose to
risk it all. Blumberg, 48, did not respond to repeated interview requests in person, by phone, through e-mail and
mail, including a request at his latest court appearance Thursday.
In an apology to friends after his latest arrest, in January, he wrote: ''Drugsare insidious and I am proof that they
care not at all about one'seducation, achievements, and business and civic activities. They are present in all circles
of life. Please don'tmisunderstand me, though; I am fully to blame for what I'vedone.''The undated apology was
written on his company'sstationery.
But because of Blumberg'svery public role in the community, his story goes beyond a personal tragedy.
It brings up the bigger issue of how a longtime drug addict with three arrests could have made it into the top ranks
of community and even state civic leadership. It raises the question of whether, of all the people who worked with

him, invested with him, appointed him and anointed him, anyone knew or at least suspected the truth -- and
whether it would have made any difference.
Nobody will admit knowing about Blumberg'saddiction. And yet, it seems, people did know. A former girlfriend,
Cindy Meyer, says she dated Blumberg for seven months starting in October 2002 and found out about his
addiction at the end of the relationship.
''Iwas surprised to learn how many of the people around him had long-term knowledge of his problem but felt
powerless to help, mostly believing that he is the only one who can help himself,''she wrote in an e-mail to The
Miami Herald. ``Philip agreed to get help, but our relationship ended.''
Adrienne Arsht, chair of Miami'sTotalBank, heard the whispers that not all was as it seemed but says they meant
nothing to her. Arsht, who counts Blumberg among the local leaders she affectionately calls her Lost Boys,
describes him as caring and sensitive.
''Iwas aware that sometimes Philip didn'treturn a phone call for a while,''Arsht said. ``I never experienced anything
like that. I heard about it from others.''
William Cullom, president of the Greater Miami chamber for more than 20 years, insists he never saw anything
suspicious. Cullom says that when Blumberg chaired the chamber in 2000-01, they talked every weekday and had
breakfast on Saturdays at the Tin Muffin on South Dixie Highway.
''Nota single person ever said a word to me,''Cullom said. ``There was never a discussion. It was not as though
people were looking the other way. It is still hard to believe. . . . He could be the smartest person I have ever met.''
BRILLIANT BUT TROUBLED
SON OF A DEVELOPER
STARTED COMPANY AT 22
The picture that emerges through interviews, police records and financial documents is of a brilliant but deeply
troubled man, one thoughtful enough to send a friend -- Arsht -- an orchid on her birthday, yet aggressive enough to
break the doorknob and barge into a stranger'shouse half-naked.
Philip Blumberg grew up as the eldest of three sons in a prominent Miami family.
His father, David, was a developer and one of the original civic leaders on the elite committee called the NonGroup. His mother, Lee Dickens, was a daring TV personality whose stunts included walking on the wing of a
biplane and tracking panthers in South America. Asked why she did such stunts, she said simply: ``I was bored.''
Philip Blumberg graduated from the University of North Carolina, just like his father. At 22, he started American
Ventures, which began as a contracting and construction-management firm, out of a converted garage. He was the
only employee.
''Ididn'twant to go into Dad'sbusiness. Part of it was youthful ego,''Blumberg told The Miami Herald in 2000.
He suspended his business to get an MBA from Harvard, again like his father. After he graduated, he built
American Ventures into a real-estate investment and management powerhouse. He served with the Greater Miami
chamber, the Orange Bowl Committee and the Downtown Development Authority.
As Blumberg's career blossomed, his father'sfortune was headed for a spectacular collapse. A real-estate recession
forced the elder Blumberg to file for bankruptcy in 1991. David Blumberg watched his net worth plummet from $50
million to a deficit within a year.
Leading 2 lives: civic leader'srise and hard fall; After Philip Blumberg descended from civic eminence to a dark
side of arrests and addiction, he told friends....
Meanwhile, Philip'spersonal life was rocky. On Nov. 17, 1997, just seven days after turning 40, he was arrested on
burglary charges. The story, according to a Metro-Dade police report: An officer spotted Blumberg just after 3 in the
afternoon ''wearing red shirt and no shorts and no underwear running through the backyards''near Northwest 100th
Terrace and 14th Avenue west of Miami Shores.
Blumberg broke off a front doorknob and entered a home, the report continued. Within seconds, a woman came out
and screamed for help. Blumberg told police he had left his shorts inside another home.
The report refers to Philip Bloomberg, but the Social Security number and birth date match Blumberg's.The case
was not publicized, and its outcome could not be determined because it was sealed or expunged.
Less than two months later, David Blumberg died of prostate cancer at 72. His assets went to his wife. There was
nothing left over for his sons, Philip, John and Matthew, in the family trust. Philip served as the personal
representative for his father'swill.
When his mother died two years later at 71, she intentionally left Philip out of her will. ''Ihave made this decision
without influence from any other person,''she wrote. Her assets, valued before taxes at about $3 million, were to be
divided equally between her two other sons.
Matthew Blumberg, the youngest, declined to comment. John didn'treturn calls.
A PROMINENT POSITION
HE LED THE CHAMBER,
PLAYED AN ACTIVIST ROLE
In June 2000, Blumberg became chair of the Greater Miami chamber, a voluntary position. It was a tumultuous
time, as his two lives tugged ever further in opposite directions.
Under Blumberg, the chamber took an active role in the community. He had ''alot of adrenaline,''as then-president
Cullom put it. When Blumberg talked, people tended to listen.
Blumberg, who once defined power as ''theability to motivate people to action,''lobbied for the community to get past
the divisiveness of the Elin Gonzlez saga. His remarks impressed Hodding Carter, then president of the Knight
Foundation, a Miami-based organization that gives money for journalism and community projects.
''Wethought the world of him,''Carter said. Carter pushed the Knight Foundation to invest in one of Blumberg's realestate funds -- a move that Carter says he would not make today knowing about the addiction.
Blumberg'spower circle included Spanish television executive Jos Cancela and politician Johnny Winton, with
whom he would hang out and talk in the swimming pool for hours at a time.
When Winton'sfather died a few years ago, Winton didn'ttell anyone about the funeral in Albuquerque, N.M.
Blumberg found out and went.
''Iam sitting in the front row of the chapel, and I look up, and I am shaking hands with Philip,''Winton said. ``That is
the friend I know. He just showed up, didn'tcall or nothing. He just showed up.''
On Nov. 29, 2000, after midnight, Blumberg was stopped for running a stop sign in Pompano Beach, according to a
report from the Broward Sheriff'sOffice.
At first, the gray Jeep SUV kept going, despite the attempts of sheriff'sdeputies to stop it. When it finally came to a
halt, a deputy spotted a broken glass crackcocaine pipe on the floor of the front passenger side, the report states.
Leading 2 lives: civic leader'srise and hard fall; After Philip Blumberg descended from civic eminence to a dark
side of arrests and addiction, he told friends....
Blumberg got out and began to sweat profusely. He admitted owning the pipe, and a ''smallcrack-cocaine rock'' was
found in the glove box. ''Def[endant]stated he does have a crack problem,''the report adds.
Blumberg was charged with possession of cocaine, a felony, and of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. He
pleaded no contest and was sentenced to a year'sprobation with random drug testing.
Once again, the case was not publicized, and he remained chair of the chamber. Cullom did notice that Blumberg
was going up to Fort Lauderdale a lot, but thought it was because he owned a building there.
Joe Natoli, who was active in the chamber at the time while president and general manager of The Miami Herald
Publishing Co., says the chamber would not have ignored a member'sdrug problem, had it known.
''Ithink Philip'sclose friends, if they knew, would have tried to help him,''said Natoli, now publisher of The
Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.
After the 2000 arrest, Blumberg managed to kick his drug habit, at least for a while. Court records show that he was
tested 36 times over a 10-month period.
While he was regularly providing urine samples for drug testing in May 2001, he was appointed to the University of
Miami'sboard of trustees. That November, his wife of 15 years filed for divorce. Lina Blumberg has declined to
comment on her ex-husband'saddiction, saying only, ``This is a personal issue. As far as I know, he is a good man.
He is a good father to our sons.''
About the same time, Blumberg had a relationship with a chamber staff member, an assistant in the public-relations
office. The woman gave birth to a child in June 2002.
There was a dispute over paternity, with both the woman and Blumberg filing suits. Blumberg eventually
acknowledged fatherhood and agreed to pay $1,300 a month in child support, court documents show.
In 2003, The Miami Herald ranked Blumberg among the dozen most influential business people in Miami-Dade
County. He cited as his proudest professional accomplishment the recognition of an American Ventures real-estate
investment fund with the top performers in the nation.
When asked at the time whether there was anything he would do over, Blumberg answered: ``Nothing
professionally.''
A TURN OF EVENTS
NEW SUCCESSES,
THEN AN ARREST
Last November, Blumberg was chosen chair-elect of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, which acts as ambassador
and lobbyist for 137,000 businesses. In January, he sold a building at 1401 Brickell Ave. for $61 million, doubling
his money -- and that of investors -- in less than a decade.
On Jan. 8, he was arrested in a remote area of Weston for possession of cocaine, marijuana and drug
paraphernalia, according to a Broward Sheriff'sOffice report.
This third arrest finally dragged into daylight the secrets hidden in the shadows of his accomplishments. Blumberg
resigned from the boards of the University of Miami, the Ransom Everglades private school and the Florida
chamber. He said he did not want to appear to compromise the chamber'sethical standards.
''Weaccepted his resignation with regret,''said chamber Chair Robert Edward White. ``He has been a terrific
supporter of the Florida chamber for many years. . . . He obviously has some personal problems that he needs to
deal with, and I'msure he will.''
Leading 2 lives: civic leader'srise and hard fall; After Philip Blumberg descended from civic eminence to a dark
side of arrests and addiction, he told friends....
Blumberg still serves on the Greater Miami chamber'sboard of governors, a lifetime position. The board advises
directors but does not govern.
He is now in a rehab program in Virginia, as confirmed during his Thursday appearance before Judge Jeffrey
Rosinek of Miami-Dade Drug Court. The two know each other from Coral Gables High School, where Rosinek was
once a teacher and Blumberg a student. Rosinek says he was ``a great kid.''
The judge gave Blumberg a hearty greeting and applauded his progress in rehab. The drug court requires offenders
to get treatment for a year and check back regularly.
For many who knew or knew of Blumberg, it'sstill a shock that a man who rose so high could at the same time fall
so hard. And yet it'snot the first time. In 1995, another member of the Greater Miami chamber'sexecutive board with
a cocaine habit -- Kevin Cohorst -- killed himself.
''Justas many high-end people have addiction problems as people of lower socio-economic status,''said Miami
Beach physician Dr. Jeffrey Kamlet, president of the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine. ``As things crash and
burn, the last thing to go is the professional life.''
But when the addict is as influential as Blumberg, the addiction can involve a community and a business. Some in
the community could easily have known because a crack-cocaine habit is so hard to hide, Kamlet says.
''Wealways think that nobody knows,''he noted. ``But they always know.''
Winton and Cancela, among Blumberg'sclosest friends, declined to comment further. Cancela offered a statement
calling the matter private.
As for Blumberg'sbusiness, it'snot clear what -- if any -- obligation he had to disclose his problems to investors.
''Itwould depend on a lot of facts and circumstances . . . including the extent to which it is affecting his business,'' said
Miami securities lawyer Richard Brodsky. ``It is at least highly arguable -- not beyond the realm of possibility -- that
under the law, it should have been disclosed.''
However an addiction starts, experts say, it often ends as a disease, a cancer that cannot be cured but only
controlled as it tries to eat up a life. But if Blumberg can face up to it and fight it, the community will forgive and
forget, predicts Edgar Jones, a fellow board member of the Orange Bowl Committee and an official of Miami's
Rockefeller Group.
Jones recalls how nobody held it against David Blumberg when he filed for bankruptcy. ''Davidkept his head up
high, and everybody was happy that he put it behind him,''Jones said. ``Philip can do the same thing.''
Miami Herald business writers Christina Hoag and Cindy Krischer Goodman contributed to this report.

Jill Shockett, a Children'sCancer Caring Center volunteer, was horrified: stray cats got into the garage of her
Normandy Isle home, soiling and ruining 1,000 shopping bags and some gifts stashed away for the center'sannual
holiday party.
"I was hysterically crying. Didn'tknow what I was going to do. It was my fault - it was my house."
Shockett, 47, had five days to come up with another 1,000 shopping bags to hold presents for 500 sick kids and
their siblings. "All I could think of was 'Burdines:The Florida Store.'"
Desperate to get though to an exec, she fibbed to a Burdines operator, saying she was late for an "appointment"
with a store honcho. She got connected to Jamie Allen, a tech systems manager. Shockett blurted out her bag lady
sob story, and Allen said she'dtry to help.
Minutes later, Shockett got a call from Carroll Kesinger, Burdines'purchasing, print shop and gift wrap director. The
next day, Shockett had 1,000 Burdines holiday bags.
"A perfect match," says Carey Watson, Burdines senior VP of marketing. "What they needed is something we could
help with right away."
Says Shockett: "I'venever gotten a donation that fast." Friends kicked in cash to replace toys. The event is at 11
a.m. today at Miami Beach Convention Center.
Shockett, already collecting for next year, is now searching for donated storage space.

HEADED FOR COURT?
A doctor who became a patient at Mount Sinai Medical Center is suing the hospital for medical malpractice.
Jeffrey Kamlet, 48, underwent an emergency cardiac catheterization in December '01."While sedated . . . a sheath
dislodged from his groin, causing him to hemorrhage into his scrotum," says the complaint, filed by Spencer
Aronfeld. The sheath is a short tube that gives access to the blood vessel. Kamlet is claiming "irreversible . . .
damage" and "severe emotional and financial loss."
Rare that a doc sues a hospital for malpractice, says prominent med mal lawyer Stuart Z. Grossman. "They fear
repercussions." Kamlet, who practices internal medicine, is on staff at Mount Sinai. The hospital issued a statement
that it has "one of the top 100 cardiac programs" in the United States, but could not comment further, citing federal
privacy regulations.
