@CUScarborough

Coventry University Scarborough Campus delivers an innovative approach to higher

education that is designed to integrate study into the life that you lead.
Gaining higher-level skills and qualifications is really important, but sometimes it can be difficult or virtually impossible to fit traditional study
into your life. Thats why we have designed this new approach to learning that opens high quality university education up to a wide range of
potential learners.
We provide a focused teaching and learning environment that will lead to academic and professional qualifications. And this is precisely where
our commitment lies.

Employability

Flexibility

As well as making sure that our courses

wherever possible we have designed

classes running in either mornings or
afternoons, depending on your course,
to help you study around your other

Coventry University Scarborough Campus

Part-time
study

12

fb.com/CovUniScarborough

@CUScarborough

At Coventry University Scarborough Campus we have designed our part-time courses to fit in
with the lives of busy adults. We have introduced a range of degrees that are available at times
specifically to suit the needs of our students.

Study programmes
All of the Foundation and Degree programmes
which can be found from page 31 are open
to part-time students. The main difference
between full-time and part-time students is
the pace at which they choose to study. Our
part-time students can now study up to four
modules per year, meaning you can complete
your programme much quicker e.g. a degree
programme can be completed in three years.
You can also choose to study your degree
more slowly at 30 or 60 credits per year if
that suits you better.

Top Up Degrees
If you have successfully completed a HND
(Higher National Diploma) or Foundation
Degree you can study further and progress
onto the final year of an Honours Degree
programme with us. A Top Up will typically
take one further year of study and we
offer a range of study options which you
could consider.

Day Release
Attending through day release enables people
to carry on studying whilst they are working.
You can be in work (usually full-time), but for
one day a week your employer may allow
you to attend university, so that you can
study for a qualification.

At Coventry University Scarborough Campus,

we offer a range of programmes as a day
release study option. Day release study can
have a direct benefit to your company
through projects which can be applied to
real situations.

Fully online
We offer students the chance to study for
two of our BA Honours Degree programmes
in either Management and Leadership or
Management and Professional Accounting
with our new online learning mode.
You will be taught as a distance learning
student, which means you wont have to
even leave your home to get that all important
qualification! You will still study in our block
structure and you will also get full support
from our Student Support Advisors and
tutors so you wont be alone!

Professional courses
Our professional courses are also designed
with part-time adult students in mind and we
offer these periodically, so we dont keep you
waiting for a course to start.

University in the evening

If like many people, you regularly find yourself
busy with other commitments over the
weekend, you will find the option to study
during weekday evenings the ideal solution.
Depending on the course selected and
subject to availability based on demand,
a typical evening course will run over week
day evenings (up to two per week) between
6pm and 10pm.
University in the day
We understand that not every prospective
student is committed during the week. In fact,
studying during the day can be better for some
students than at the weekend for example,
if you have children at school or nursery,
or have a part-time job in the evening. Our
day programme will be delivered during the
day from Monday to Friday on either mornings
(9am - 1pm) or afternoons (2pm - 6pm).
By studying part-time with Coventry University
Scarborough Campus, you will be getting
high quality courses and teaching by staff who
know how to meet the needs of adult learners,
in a university environment.

When can you study?

Saturday University
If you are working during the week, you may
find it convenient to study for your degree
on a Saturday. Many of our degree courses
are delivered all day on Saturday in addition to
online learning.

FUNDING AVAILABLE

All of our Foundation, HNC, HND and Degree courses are eligible for a student loan which covers the costs of the tuition fees, which means no
upfront payment. Funding does depend on your individual circumstances. Please visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information.

13

Coventry University Scarborough Campus

Assessment
Learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests which take place during and at
the end of each six-week block. There are also no traditional end of year examinations to
worry about.
Throughout your course, you will be
learning and deepening your understanding
of your chosen subject through a variety of
methods lectures, tutorials, self-directed
learning, textbooks, module webinars,
scenario-based learning sets, professional
libraries and resources, journals and case
studies, seminars, discussion forums and
peer-to-peer learning.
Naturally, weve also embraced technology
and online resources are integral to our
teaching and learning approach; we will
give you access to an online learning
network where youll be able to interact
with your fellow students.
At Coventry University Scarborough
Campus there are no traditional end of year
final examinations to worry about.

14

fb.com/CovUniScarborough

Instead, well assess your learning

through course work and phase tests.
Assessments take place during and at the
end of each six-week block. Tutors can
provide support through regular updates
and tutorials, either online or face to face.

No traditional
final exams
Professional qualifications
Our courses have been carefully designed
to help you gain the skills and knowledge
required to undertake the relevant
professional qualification within your
chosen subject area.

@CUScarborough

Assessment for professional qualifications

does vary for each professional body but
usually takes the form of coursework or
sitting an exam. This is normally
independent of assessments for your
academic award. Please note that all
examination fees and membership fees
are in addition to your tuition fees. Payment
will need to be made by you direct to
the relevant professional body. They will
send your results by post, and if you are
successful you will have the opportunity
to become a member of that professional
body an excellent addition to your CV.

Uni@Work is Coventry University

Scarborough Campuss new workplace
learning programme.
We deliver higher education tailored to the needs of individual
organisations entirely on their own premises. Uni@Work operates
in partnership with the employer to design a course which
embodies the culture of their organisation and is customised to
meet their business needs. Learners are then able to apply their
developing knowledge to real-life opportunities in their own
day-to-day experience.
Study leads to a Foundation Degree or Bachelors Degree (via
a top-up route) in a number of disciplines such as Management
and Leadership, Law, Accounting, Financial Services, Information
Technology, Tourism, Marketing, Engineering and Health. Learners
also have the opportunity to acquire professional qualifications from
organisations such as the Chartered Management Institute (CMI),
Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and Chartered Institute
of Legal Executives (CILEx) as part of their academic studies.
Programme delivery is centred on adapting to different learning
styles and preferences, and all our business coaches are skilled
in tailoring sessions and responding to individual needs.
For people who have chosen to go into full time paid work rather
than follow the traditional route to higher education, this is a way
they can still learn and gain qualifications, consolidating their
knowledge by practical application as they learn. Those already
established in their careers can develop new skills and enhance
those they already have to reach their potential.

I have learnt something

applicable to my role in every
module of the programme.
This is not an exaggeration.
From personal reflection,
to time management, to
managing staff, managing
projects and finance.
I believe that this programme
has made me a better
manager and has improved
my performance right from
the commencement of
the programme.

Coventry University Scarborough Campus offers a range of academic awards. For many of
our subjects you can choose the level you want to study. And the great thing about Coventry
University Scarborough Campus is that you can complete one course and then decide to study
further for a higher award, helping to improve your employability.

Access to Higher Education

(HE) Diplomas
Coventry University Scarborough Campus is
delivering OCN London Access to HE Diploma
programmes. These courses are designed to
provide the underpinning knowledge and skills
needed to progress to an HNC, HND or a
degree in higher education..
The Access Diploma enables those who do
not have the necessary level 3 qualifications
(such as A levels or BTECs) required to enter
higher education to acquire a qualification
which is equivalent in standard to these.

Foundation Year
Our Foundation Year courses offer an
introduction to your chosen subject and are
an ideal route to higher level qualifications,
helping you develop the necessary skills for
further study. You can apply for a Foundation
Year course if you have:

Studied for level 3 qualifications, such as

A levels or a BTEC National Diploma and

Certificate qualifications, but may not have
achieved the grades necessary to enter the
university course of your choice.

Studied for a level 3 qualification but have

decided to change subject area.
A Foundation Year course will comprise four
six-week learning blocks (120 credits).
Higher National Certificate (HNC)
A Higher National Certificate is a wellestablished qualification at level 4 on the
National Qualifications Framework.

Many employers like their staff to have this

qualification if they want them to operate at
a technician level within their organisation.
At Coventry University Scarborough Campus
you will be required to study and pass four
specified six-week learning blocks (120 credits)
at level 4 in order to achieve the HNC.
A HNC is year one of a degree course.

Higher National Diploma (HND)

The Higher National Diploma can be studied
from year 1 or you can join the course
after completing a HNC. With a HND
qualification you can expect to work at a
higher technician level.
The HND is equivalent to 240 credits or
eight specified six-week learning blocks:

four at level 4
four at level 5
A HND is year two of a degree course.

Bachelors Degree with Honours

The Undergraduate Honours Degree is a
widely recognised qualification offered by
the UK university system. Once you have an
honours degree you will be a graduate and
have better prospects ensuring you can work
at a professional level in an organisation.
The Honours Degree at Coventry University
Scarborough Campus is designed so that
you can enter at first, second or third year
according to your existing qualifications.

It is made up of 360 credits:

120 at level 4 (year one)

120 at level 5 (year two)
120 at level 6 (year three)

Each level is usually taken and completed

over one year for full-time study.

Professional qualifications
In addition to an academic qualification, many
courses at Coventry University Scarborough
Campus can lead to professional qualifications.
These are accredited awards made by
professional bodies after you have taken
and passed the examinations, tests and
professional practice requirements set by the
relevant professional body.
Professional qualifications are designed to
ensure that professional standards within a
whole range of fields are maintained and in
most instances, youll be able to apply for
membership of the professional body.
Where applicable our HNC, HND and Honours
Degree courses have been designed around
these standards and we have worked closely
with the relevant professional bodies to
achieve accreditation. Securing a professional
qualification could help set you apart from
other candidates when youre applying for
jobs, and it will show prospective employers
that you are a committed individual, who is
serious about what you do.

Please note that all professional

examination fees and membership
fees are in addition to your tuition
fees.

Employability
At Coventry University Scarborough
Campus we want to make sure that our
graduates leave us with the skills they
need to compete for graduate jobs
and be a success in the work place.
We plan to support you on your journey from student to
graduate and hopefully employment by facilitating and
encouraging work placements and internships to help
you stand out from other graduates.
Our courses will also give you the knowledge, skills and
expertise identified by employers in business and industry.
We do this through making sure that not only do our
courses meet the criteria for an academic qualification
wherever possible we have also designed them around
the standards for professional qualifications, so you have
the potential to achieve an academic qualification plus a
professional qualification, which could help make you
even more attractive to employers.
From year one of your studies with us you will be
supported and advised about careers and employability.
Many students feel it is too early to start thinking about
graduation, however learning what skills are needed to
secure placements in year two will be key to your success.
Placements can be in the UK or study and work abroad.
Through your weekly tutorials we will support you with this
and provide workshops to help build on the new skills you
have learnt.
In addition to helping with your long term career prospects
we also offer students the opportunity to apply to become
a Student Ambassador where you can earn money
representing the institution. Many local employers also offer

Early Years
The Early Years sector is undergoing radical
and rapid change. The 0 - 5 age range is
an area in which a well-qualified workforce
has been identified as the key to raising the
quality standards of early years provision
and has been highlighted as a government
priority. Reforms state that everyone who
works with children and young people must
have common core skills and knowledge
to help them work better together,
communicate better and have a firm basis
on which to build their career in childrens
services. This recognition demands that the
early years workforce is fully equipped and
trained to meet the holistic needs of young
children. Therefore, this course is designed
to prepare knowledgeable graduates with
the ability to work towards the changing
requirements for Early Years Practitioners
in light of the developments within the
Department for Education (DfE) (2013)
More Great Childcare.
