education, we offer a number of free programmes to help residents along their way and
achieve their absolute potential.
Many of the programmes are offered within the Idea Stores themselves and provide you
with an opportunity to access online learning, books and a range of other free activities
that will inspire you. Our tutors are experts in their fields and will give you the best learning
experience. Inspiring and passionate, many of them continue to work in their occupations
and so will provide you with the most current knowledge and skills.
As you browse through this guide, you will see we have continued to develop the range of
our courses to include Cookery, Dance, Community Interpreting, Family Learning classes,
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and many more.
You can study just for fun and pursue your own interests, for qualifications that enable you
to get a job or just develop your skills further. We welcome everyone at every level.
Student satisfaction with our service is outstanding. We are proud to say that 94% of all learners
judge their experience with us to be good or excellent. Staff will welcome you warmly and
help support you to be successful. Id like to encourage you to enrol with Idea Store - now is

Excellent satisfaction with classes

Every year we ask for feedback from our
learners through surveys and the results show
our learner satisfaction is very high. Last
year learners said that they were made to
feel welcome, they would recommend their
courses and that they felt safe.
Achievement levels are high and learners
are very satisfied with the way they were
taught, the group of people they met and the
challenges learning placed on them.

Learners told us that their skills improved, their

personal safety was treated as a high priority
and that they learned what they wanted to
learn.
In all of the categories we asked learners about,
over 92% of responses said that the experience
of learners was good or excellent.

Khaleda Akter Ethi

Entry 2 ESOL
When Khaleda came to the UK from
Bangladesh 2 years ago she was desperate to
learn English and integrate into the country.
She joined an Entry 1 class in September 2014
at Idea Store Whitechapel and quickly achieved
the full Entry 1 ESOL qualification. In September
2015, she progressed to ESOL Entry 2 at Idea Store
Bow where she passed her Entry 2 Speaking and
Listening award in February 2016.
Khaleda says: I joined ESOL classes at Idea Store
Learning to further develop my English. There
I met many people from different cultures and
made friends. Later, as my English improved, I got
a job as a carer. Caring for people is something I
really like, my English helps me to communicate
with clients and do my job properly.
As Im working, I feel Im part of society and I can
speak for myself and feel independent. My plan for
the future is to further improve my skills in English
and work so that I can get a skilled job like a nurse
or work with children in school.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Skills for Life and Work

ESOL classes are for UK residents who do not speak English as their first language.
Our ESOL classes are taught by our ESOL specialists. They aim to improve speaking, listening, reading
and writing skills and can help you to:
Find work and gain further skills
Improve your grammar and literacy
Take part in everyday life in the UK and your community
Talk to doctors, teachers and other professionals
Use computers
We deliver ESOL classes at Idea Stores and learning centres across the borough from Pre-Entry to
Level 1.
You will be in a class of learners of the same level as you and when your class ends we will support
you with your next steps.

How to join an ESOL class at Idea Store Learning

Before you can join any of our ESOL classes, you must attend an assessment and enrolment session.
At assessment we will guide you onto the right class through a one-to-one interview with an ESOL
specialist.
Your speaking and listening skills will be tested and we will ask you to do some reading and writing.
We will also discuss your needs and availability.
Once we have agreed a suitable class for you, you will need to enrol and pay any fees that are due as
soon as possible.
You will not have a confirmed place in the class until you have enrolled.
Please note that due to high demand for ESOL courses, we cannot guarantee a place for every learner.

IT for ESOL
We run IT for ESOL classes at Idea Store Bow, Idea Store Chrisp Street, Idea Store Whitechapel and the
Shadwell Centre. Classes take place once a week for two hours, either in the morning or afternoon.
Whatever your level you will learn to work safely with computers, use the internet to find information,
send and receive emails, and create documents. You will discover how to save time by doing
things online - for example taxing your car, looking for a new flat to rent or finding a job. You can be
assessed for these classes at our Skills for Life and Work assessments.

I originate from Argentina but spent most of
my life growing up in Spain until moving to
the UK fifteen years ago.
I am eager to improve my skills to get a better
job. Upon doing research I found out about the
European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
course, through the Idea Store website. I am
really enjoying the course and have now almost
completed it. I have been given good support with

I went to the Womens International Day event at

Idea Store Whitechapel, where I found out how to
apply to become an Idea Store Learner Volunteer.
I have been successful and have now started a
placement as an Administration Volunteer with
Idea Store Learning. I enjoy being valued and
having an opportunity to contribute my skills in
an office environment. My experiences are taking
me closer to being able to apply for the kind of job
that I want to be doing in future.
I am very grateful to Idea Store Learning for the all
the opportunities they have given me to progress
on my personal development. They do not just
offer courses, but so much more in terms of
events, networks and volunteering. I look forward
to seeing what the future holds.

Family Learning

All parents want their children to do well at school and to succeed. However, many parents simply
do not know where to start. We run family learning classes that give parents and children the
opportunity to learn together with their children, as well as a chance to share ideas with other
parents and develop their own skills.

Arts and Creative Industries Workshops

Whilst we will provide basic materials, you will be
expected to provide your own specialist materials.

Photography
Upholstery
Ceramics
Printmaking
Fashion

You should have the necessary ambition and

drive to self-direct your own study and be active
in raising your own profile or be pursuing a
career within the creative industries sector.

The aim is for you to further your work and

raise your profile within the creative industries
sector, either through producing work for
exhibition or competition or for employment
potentially as self-employed entrepreneurs
producing work for sale.
You will develop your existing knowledge and
skills through full access to a wide range of
specialist equipment together with professional
support from a member of staff.

If you wish to enrol on a workshop class you

must have completed at least 20 hours on one
of our intermediate or improvers course, within
the last three years or hold an equivalent level of
knowledge and skills.

Workshops

This year we have introduced a series of Creative

Industries Workshops in the following areas:

To join the workshops you may be directed

to have a short telephone interview with a
manager to assess your skills and knowledge.
These workshops are an exciting addition to
our portfolio of courses and we look forward to
seeing successful learners progress through them.

The class has a

lovely atmosphere.
The ability to
decide upon my
own learning
supported by an
open minded tutor
has been really
enjoyable.

Fashion and Textiles

This course has been brilliant for me; not
just because Ive learnt so many new skills
but also because the support and friendship
of my classmates has meant so much.

36

The standard of instruction is excellent and

the resources weve had access to have
been great however the best and most
amazing component has been our tutor
without whom I may well have given up
weeks ago.

The lining for my jacket used one of the

Japanese Shibori techniques. A method of
resist dying that uses tying, twisting, pleating
and binding as a technique to resist dye, so
that the resulting fabric has areas which are
dyed and undyed.
I used silk crepe, this was iron pleated then
zig-zag folded into a box pattern. Squares of
mount board were then inserted before it was
clamped tight and immersed into a dye bath.

Before I came on this course I had absolutely

no confidence using a sewing machine.
I also had no experience with cutting fabric. I did a
fashion course elsewhere, around seven years ago
but was not able to complete it. This course has
given me back so much confidence. I was taught
so very well by my tutor, who has so much patience
and tolerance. I have really enjoyed every bit of it!

Katie Wignall,
Walkie Talkie Introduction
to Guiding in Tower Hamlets
Having lived in the area for a year I wanted to
feel more in touch with both the history and the
community in East London.
Walkie Talkie appealed to me because it seemed
to be a good introductory level for non-accredited
guides like myself.
The course gave me a very good, broad
understanding of the history of Tower Hamlets. We
covered many aspects of guiding; what it means to
be a good guide, how to create a great experience
for your audience and what to avoid. These were all
tips I found easy to put into practice. There was a
good mix of history and practical skills.

Learning to use Exercise to Stay Healthy

and Fit
If you want to stay healthy and fit through
exercise, then we have lots of classes for
you ranging from Yoga, Pilates and Zumba.
You could also choose from Circuit Training,
Cardioblast and Exercise for Healthy Backs.

Cardioblast

Case

study
Our group was very friendly and I felt unintimidated
when giving presentations or asking questions. In the
second part of the course we were required to work
in groups and this was a very helpful exercise. The
walks and trips outside of the classroom were also a
huge bonus.
With thanks to the Walkie Talkie course I now run
my own independent walking tour company. I am
currently researching further London walks having
put together a successful and well-received walk
in Spitalfields. With the confidence gained from
completing this course, I have also successfully
applied onto a further guide training course in
London, the prestigious Blue Badge Course.

I decided to enrol on Reiki Level 1 as I am

a nurse and wanted to learn something
new. The other reason was to help my
little boy who has health problems and
from my research I felt that Reiki would
be helpful to use with him.
On the course I learned to meditate
which I have never done before. I learned
to heal myself and others. All in all my life
has become more tranquil and relaxed.
Each week I looked forward to every
class with my tutor as every lesson we
learned something new. I cannot really
say what I enjoyed the most as Reiki is
just wonderful in many ways both for
healing others or healing ourselves.
My plans are to progress onto Reiki level
2 and go further. I would like to thank
my tutor for the amazing experience and
opportunity she gave me learning Reiki.

How do I Apply for Level 3 Accredited Courses?

Step 2: Once you have attended an

assessment session for the Prepare for
course and enrolled, you will need to book an
appointment with the Learner Support Team to
apply for your 24+ loan. If you wish to pay for
the course without a 24+ loan, you can do so
in two equal instalments or in full through the
Learner Support Team.

If you are unable to pay the new fees, then the

government has created a new 24+ Advanced
Learning Loan which can help you to pay your
tuition fees.
The loan is easy to apply for, your household
income is not taken into account and there is
no credit check. You only start to repay the loan
when your income is over 21,000 a year.

On a recent trip to Northern Spain, travelling to

Bilbao and Asturias, Cheryl was surprised how
much she could understand when asking for
directions. As tourism is less common in this

Josie Munro
Ballet Improvers
I have been attending Ballet classes at
Idea Store Learning for over three years
now. I find them very inspirational. I learn
a lot, and the classes are always fun.
I have taken part in all the summer shows
since I started, this year being the third
time. Last academic year, the Friday
performance took place on my 82nd
birthday. What better way to celebrate?
I find Ballet not only helps to keep me
physically fit; it also keeps my brain active.
Attending classes are also a good social
outlet. There is always a happy atmosphere
in class, and I have made new friends. I
went through a very difficult period in my
life when my husband became disabled,
and I became his full time carer for six
years until he died. Ballet classes were the
only thing that kept me going at this time,
and through my period of bereavement.
I think adult education classes are a good
thing generally for society. They give
purpose and motivation to people. Life
would be very sad without them.

Intensive Dance Training

Do you want to engage in intensive dance
training, pursue further professional
dance training and develop a dance
related career?
This might be the course for you. A one
year dance programme which was originally
developed in partnership with Birkbeck,
University of London.
The programme is mainly centred on regular
technique classes and creative workshops in
Contemporary dance and classical Ballet.
It aims to prepare individuals wishing to
audition and progress onto Professional
Dance Training courses and or just wanting
to engage in more intensive training. This
course offers particularly good structured
training for people in full time work. As well
as one Ballet class and one Contemporary
dance class a week (Mondays 6-9pm); you
will be given performance opportunities
including a fully staged production in a
theatre at the end of the course.

Entry Requirement:
You should have some experience as a
performer, who has received training in
dance, and be presently capable of working
at Improvers level (fundamental technical
skills clearly understood and embodied) in
Contemporary Dance and/ or elementary
level (Confident grasp of the basic movement
vocabulary) in classical Ballet.
To enrol on this course all interested
participants must attend an audition.
To attend the audition, please contact us at:
ideastorelearning@towerhamlets.gov.uk

I really enjoyed the

class! I have learnt to
control my body and
muscles more. I love
the teachers approach
and the fact she is
well prepared and
welcomes very well
people with no ballet
background.

Vanya Ivanova
Photography
I have studied photography at Idea
Store Learning for two years now.

The tutor was

inspiring and
encouraging;
I learnt a lot
of different
darkroom
techniques.

72

I started with Photoshop course, and went

on to study, street photography, darkroom
techniques and recently studio and portrait
courses. I have had an amazing time with
amazing people, always encouraged by
my tutors.
I have learned to improve my photography
skills to a higher level and now I cant stop
thinking and working on new photography
projects. I get very excited that I am able
to share my vision to the World.

BEFORE

Hazera Begum
Upholstery Beginners
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment
of this course. Silvia is a great teacher,
very skilled.

Technical and DIY Skills

(TSCR) Upholstery Workshops

Her teaching method is very relaxed, patient

and she always works at your own pace. She
makes the learning process very much fun. I
feel I have been given a great insight into the
craft of upholstery.
I never expected I would be able to achieve
the work I did as a Beginner. I am very proud
of my Master Piece.
I always looked forward to attending my class
each week. I intend to enrol next term and
look forward to starting on my next project.
I would highly recommend this course to
anyone whos got an old chair, stool etc. that
needs some love and attention. Idea Store
Learning is the place to go!

Printmaking

78

I have studied several printmaking courses at the

Shadwell Centre which has enabled me to develop
a way of working that has allowed me to produce
prints that I now sell on-line and at local craft markets.
The social aspect of the studio space is also hugely
important as feedback from fellow printmaker has been
very beneficial.

Katerina Dipla
Printmaking Learner Volunteer
For over two years I have been a learner volunteer
at the Shadwell Centre.

The chance to be
amongst other people
trying to do the same
things as me and to
talk about relevant
issues as well as
receive feedback on
my work has been
fantastic.

I very much enjoy my time at the centre as I engage

with a diverse range of people, exchange ideas and we
encourage each other to develop our artistic practise.
My introduction to the Centre was the starting point of my
thinking about how community can benefit from art, and
the importance of art within society; this has led me to
make a bid to the Arts Council to support my work further
hopefully culminating in exhibitions across London.
