emergencypreparednessactionplanspecifictotheSunsetDistrict,calledResilientSunset.

WealsoencourageresidentstosignupforfreedisasterpreparednesstrainingtaughtbytheSan
FranciscoFireDepartmentsNeighborhoodEmergencyResponseTeam(NERT).NERTtraining
helpscitizensdevelopmultifunctionalteamsthataretrainedinbasicemergencyskills.Through
thisprogram,individualslearnhowtopreparethemselvesandlovedonesforadisasterwhilealso
creatingaresilientcommunity.OurstaffmembershaveallbeenNERTcertified,andweencourage
youtobecomecertifiedaswell.ThetrainingswillbeheldatHolyNameSchool(1560

Autumn Moon Festival will be scaled
down due to the Irving Streetscape
ImprovementProject.Itwilltakeplaceon
Saturday, September 10th on the
corner parking lot at 22nd Avenue
and Irving Street, from 10:00am to
3:00pm.Thisholidayisatimetoreflect
upon the bounty of the summer harvest,
thefullnessofthemoon,andthemythof
the immortal moon Goddess, ChangO.
The Moon Festival is often considered a
Chinese Thanksgiving because of its
celebration of gratitude and inclusion of
abundant food including the popular
moon cake. The Autumn Moon Festival
will be a fun, familyfriendly event where
attendees will get a taste of the cultural
diversity of the Sunset District through

MEETDISTRICT4YOUTHCOMMISSIONER:JOSHUAPARK

Joshua Park has been appointed by Supervisor Tang to serve as our District 4 Youth
Commissioner for the 20162017 term. Josh formerly attended Alice Fong Yu Alternative
School,andiscurrentlyasophomoreattendingLowellHighSchool.Hehasbeenworkingon
important issues in the community for several years, beginning with a civic engagement
project for his eighth grade class at Alice Fong Yu Alternative School. Since then he has
become very civically engaged and is focused on providing our youth with a voice in city
government.HehasspentthelastyearworkingonVote16SF,whichisaballotinitiativethat
willgive16and17yearoldstheabilitytovoteincityelections.AsaYouthCommissioner,one
ofJoshuasmainprioritieswillbetoassistSupervisorTang'sofficeinlaunchingtheDistrict4
YouthCounciltodevelopwellrounded,civicallyengagedyouthintheSunset.

ThegoaloftheDistrict4YouthCouncilistocreateopportunitiesforyouthtoshare
their ideas on how to address issues facing our community and San Francisco as a
whole.Ouryouthoffervaluableinsightsandideas,andtheDistrict4YouthCouncil

will work closely with members of the Youth Council to ensure their ideas and

MONTHLYMUNIPASSFARES
INCREASESTARTINGSEPTEMBER1ST
MonthlyMunipassfaresincreasedonSeptember1st.TheAdultMPass,whichisMuni
only, increased from $70 to $73. The Adult A Pass, which includes Muni and Bart,
increasedfrom$83to$86.TheYouth(1517),Senior(65+),PeoplewithDisabilitiesand
Medicare Pass increased from $24 to $25. The Adult Lifeline Pass, for lowincome,
increasedfrom$35to$36.Children4andunderwillcontinuetorideforfree.Thisfare
increasewasapprovedbytheSFMTABoardofDirectorsaspartofthisfiscalyearsbudget.
Fares are determined by the SFMTA Automatic Fare Indexing Policy. For more

CONSTITUENTSPOTLIGHT:KYLETREFNY

KyleTrefnyisayoungDistrict4residentwithapassionforsavingsnowleopards,an
endangeredspeciesoflynxsizedcats.Kylesinterestwassparkedwhenhereceiveda
picturebookonsnowbirdswhenhewas6yearsold,andwatchedadocumentaryon
snow leopards on Planet Earth. With the help of his parents, he started a website
sellinggreetingcardsandpaintingsfeaturingsnowleopardsthathecreatedhimself.
HiscustomersrangefromfamilyandfriendstostrangerslivinginWyomingandNew
York. He donates all of his proceeds to the Snow Leopard Conservancy, an
organization headed by Dr. Rodney Jackson, one of the worlds leading experts on
wild snow leopards. Kyle hopes to restart his website after showcasing his work
through San Francisco Open Studios on October 29 and 30 at Three Fish
Studios(4541IrvingStreet).HewillalsobeparticipatinginWorldSnowLeopard
DayonOctober23rdatOakHillFarminGlenEllen.Inthefuture,Kylehopes
totraveltothemountainrangesofCentralandSouthAsiawheresnowleopardsexist
andseethemindigenously.WethankKyleforhisworkprotectingsnowleopards!

The Recreation and Park Department issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the
leaseandoperationofLakeMercedWest(520JohnMuirDrive)inJanuaryofthis

September 1217. Transit Week celebrates transit riders and operators, promotes

MERCHANTSPOTLIGHT:HUNTER'STHREADS

Asmallbusinesswithabigmissionhasopenedupat2124TaravalStreet. Hunters
Threadssellsusedclothingforchildrenandwomen,aswellasnewHuntersThreads
merchandise, with a portion of sales going toward providing free physical, speech,
andoccupationaltherapyforchildren.Eventually,HuntersThreadswouldalsolike
to provide music and art therapy. Hunter's Threads is building their big vision
beginningwithabrickandmortarintheOuterSunset,butthereismoretocome!

HuntersThreadsisalaboroflove,andisnamedforthesonofMichelleandJody
Scott. These San Francisco natives were blessed with the birth of their first child,

life,Hunterwasshowingsignsofdevelopmentaldelaysandhisfamilyspentalotof
their time seeking answers to the many questions they had about their sons
undiagnosedcondition.MichelleandJodysurgentdesiretofindanswersalongwith
muchdedicationandpersistenceledthemonaquesttohelptheirson.Afterbeing
constantlyreferredouttothirdpartyresourcesforevaluation,andafullyearofback
andforth,theScottsfinallywereabletogetHunterenrolledinspeech,physicaland
occupationaltherapy.

Watching Hunter thrive and develop skills under the direction of the therapists
impactedbothHunterandhisparents.ThisverytryingtimebroughtMichelletothe
realization that she wanted to give back to families like hers. The goal of Hunters
Threadsistobearesourcetoparentsthatcannotaffordtherapy,tobeanavenuefor
familiestofindplaygroupshostedbytherapists,andalsotobuildacommunitythat
advocatesforkidswhohavedevelopmentaldelays.InseveralshortmonthsMichelle
made this dream a reality, and opened Hunters Threads on September 3rd. In
additiontoattractingcustomersintheOuterSunsetwhohavedesiredtohaveaplace
to purchase thrift and retail clothing, Hunter's Threads also wants to partner with
other clinics, therapists, and small businesses that want to advocate for this brand.
