ALLIANCE UPDATE
ZigBee, the IoT and Global Growth
By Tobin Richardson, President and CEO ZigBee Alliance

Just as multitudes of analysts have predicted, the Internet of Things (IoT) has
arrived, a vision that has long been the
dream of technology enthusiasts everywhere. Businesses and consumers alike
are quickly noticing; theyre checking
out the hundreds of products that claim
to be smart, made for homes, businesses, retailers, utilities, agriculture the list goes on. The world is preparing for a new reality, a futuristic, intelligent environment that improves the comfort,
convenience, and security of everyday life.
The IoT and the Past

With all the excitement over the growth of the IoT came a flurry
of solutions working frantically to provide consumers with the
most intuitive, interoperable wireless network possible. Unfortunately, this led to a fragmented and confused industry, with
many companies eager to deliver finished products to a primed
market but unsure which standard to choose. Some opted to
choose one standard, some chose multiple, and others created
their own proprietary solutions to cope with new standards announcing their inception seemingly every month.
This natural course of events, while inevitable, is not the final outcome of the industry. There is no need to wrestle with
confusion, to certify products with multiple wireless networking standards in the hope that one will win out. The ZigBee
Alliance has been developing IoT standards and certifying
interoperable products for more than a decade, and the rise
of the IoT has been built on the solid foundation of global,
open, established ZigBee standards developed and supported
by hundreds of member companies.

The IoT and the Present

ZigBee 3.0, the most anticipated initiative of the IoT industry, is

the combination of multiple ZigBee PRO application profiles that
have been developed and strengthened during the past 12 years.
ZigBee 3.0 enables communication and interoperability between
devices for a wide variety of IoT markets, and the hundreds of
member companies that comp ose the ZigBee Alliance have been
eager to certify their products with this standard. No other wireless network for the IoT offers a comparable open, global, interoperable solution.
ZigBee, the IoT, and the Future

Recently, ON World reported that annual shipments of IEEE

802.15.4 chipsets nearly doubled in the last year, and they have
predicted that these shipments will increase by 550 percent during the next five years. They also predict that ZigBee standards
will be used in eight out of 10 of these units by 2020. This is the
latest in a series of reports that forecast the dramatic growth of
ZigBee Certified products in the next few years. As the percentage of IoT products certified with ZigBee standards increases,
the industry will begin to experience a more reliable, stable IoT.
By extension, this rise of a unified IoT will deliver on the promise of consumer-friendly solutions, providing a more accessible
market to consumers, and finally unleashing the full innovative
power of the industry.
This world of interoperable products is well on its way; right now
hundreds of ZigBee Alliance member companies are working to
shape the future of ZigBee standards. So join us, and you too
can certify your products with the most widely used wireless networking IoT standard in the world.

MARKET DEVELOPMENT
A Year of Change for ZigBee
By Lee Ratliff, Principal Analyst , Low Power Wireless IHS

The ZigBee standard is just over 10

years old this year, but its quite possible
that 2015 will turn out to be among the
most pivotal years for the technology.
Thats because the rest of the world is
finally catching up to the vision that was
outlined by ZigBees supporters back
in 2004 and 2005. Technology, economics, and consumer acceptance have finally begun to align, making many applications
within the Internet of Things (IoT) practical for the first time. A
host of smart applications have begun to take shape in mainstream markets smart homes, smart cities, smart industry, smart
grid, smart cars and many others.
Yes, the IoT has been one of the most hyped buzzwords in the
tech industry in recent years, but that doesnt mean its not real.
Advances in wireless semiconductors, solid state sensors, and
microcontrollers have made the technology of the IoT possible,
while Moores Law and other manufacturing advancements
have made the economics work. Finally, the rise of the smartphone, advances in broadband, and the ubiquity of Wi-Fi have
raised consumers expectations for connectivity and provided
the backhaul needed for successful deployments of IoT networks. The IoT has arrived, but the vastness of the opportunity
still lies ahead of us.
As a mature technology with applications across the breadth
of the IoT, ZigBee is well positioned to reap the rewards of the
IoT market. However, any great opportunity brings competitive
threats and potential market disruptions, requiring nimble adjustments to navigate the shifting market.
For ZigBee, the primary threat comes from other networking
standards which are scrambling to address the same markets.
Bluetooth Smart and the recently released Thread standard have
been especially aggressive in addressing the consumer market
and they pose the most serious threats to ZigBee in low-power
networking applications.
To counter these threats and better address future applications,
the ZigBee Alliance has had to reassess its position in the market
and the key concerns of ecosystem partners. This reassessment
has led to some exciting changes that will help prepare the standard for the next 10 years and beyond.
ZigBee 3.0

Announced in late 2014, the upcoming ZigBee 3.0 specification

should be largely complete by the end of this year.
One of the primary goals of ZigBee 3.0 is to improve interoperability and minimize confusion by consolidating the ZigBee applications library, removing redundant profiles and streamlining

the whole. Over the course of 12 years of standards work, the

application library has become one of ZigBees most valuable
assets and something that is conspicuously missing in less mature competing standards. However, after years of piece-by-piece
organic growth, the library needs to be re-evaluated in its entirety
with the goal of making interoperability a natural outcome rather
than an intentional afterthought. This much-needed reassessment
of the application profile library will further strengthen this critical asset and address weaknesses that have invited criticism in
the past.
Renewing and reinvigorating this asset is especially important
now, as the chasm between application frameworks (such as AllSeen, Brillo, HomeKit and IoTivity) and the networking layer
becomes more apparent, especially for mesh networks. A robust consolidated application library intended for resource-constrained nodes will become even more valuable as Qualcomm,
Google, Apple, Intel and others begin to realize that Wi-Fi is not
appropriate for every application.
The other major technical change in ZigBee 3.0 is the addition
of Green Power. Previously an optional feature, Green Power
will be standard in ZigBee 3.0, enabling extreme power savings for energy harvesting devices, such as light switches that
use the physical motion of the switch to generate the power
needed to transmit ZigBee packets on the network. Green
Power enables these devices to use only 1 percent of the power
normally used by a ZigBee device by creating proxy nodes,
usually line powered, that act on behalf of the Green Power
node. Green Power will further strengthen ZigBees ability to
address applications in lighting and building automation, in
particular. These markets have already begun to use energy
harvesting in light switches, occupancy sensors, and other
devices to reduce maintenance, enable flexible room layouts,
and avoid the use of expensive, heavy-gauge copper cable for
applications where only low-power signaling is necessary,
not high current carrying capacity. Up until the introduction
of Green Power, the EnOcean wireless protocol was the only
wireless technology designed for energy harvesting applications. Adding Green Power to the ZigBee 3.0 specification allows ZigBee to add further value to its already compelling
value proposition in lighting, in particular.
While the technical changes in ZigBee 3.0 are substantial, the
new specification will also come with a marketing rollout,
new certification, new branding, and a new go-to-market strategy a much-needed fresh start for a mature technology. The
ZigBee Alliance has said that it is targeting the International
Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2015 for the public unveiling of ZigBee 3.0.

MARKET DEVELOPMENT
IP Support

Companies involved in IoT connectivity are split and polarized

when it comes to the question of IP support in IoT devices. IP
detractors say that the protocol is unnecessarily burdensome to
many IoT devices that have limited resources and bandwidth. For
example, a temperature sensor has a very limited interaction, often needing to report just a few bytes of data on a periodic basis.
Requiring this device to support IP multiplies the complexity and
cost of the device, while increasing power consumption. Also,
IP support potentially increases the burden on the network by an
order of magnitude or more due to the extra overhead that is required even by lightweight header compression schemes such as
6LoWPAN. On the other hand, proponents of IP support say that
those disadvantages are far outweighed by the ability of end-toend IP networks to leverage existing IP solutions while maintaining cross-platform compatibility.
While non-IP solutions currently dominate the low-power wireless market and will have a significant share for years to come,
its clear that the demand for IP support cant be ignored by standards wishing to address the IoT. The Bluetooth SIG added IP
support to the 4.2 version of the specification in December, 2014
and the Thread Group announced the all-IP Thread standard in
mid-2014 and released the version 1.0 specification in July of
this year. Z-Wave has an IP implementation that was ratified in
late 2014, but its limited bandwidth makes robust end-to-end IP
support difficult. Still, Z-Wave has long supported IP to the networks edge through the use of a Z-Wave IP (Z/IP) gateway.

ZigBee is very well positioned to address the opportunities enabled by the IoT. ZigBee already has strong positions in smart
energy, consumer electronics, lighting, the smart home, and
other applications. By streamlining and improving the standard
with ZigBee 3.0, as well as exploring the options for lightweight
IP support, the ZigBee Alliance is making the most of 2015 to
prepare the standard for the opportunities of the next 10 years
and beyond.

The ZigBee Alliance has acknowledged the need for lightweight

IP support in addition to the non-IP ZigBee PRO protocol. The
Alliance has already developed ZigBee 2030.5 (formerly known
as ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0) which supports IP, but as a fullfeatured IP implementation developed specifically for smart
energy applications, it is not ideal for resource-constrained devices that are found in many other IoT applications. To meet the
needs of device manufacturers that require end-to-end IP support
in resource-constrained applications, a lightweight IP version of
ZigBee is needed in the market.
The ZigBee Alliance has already taken a significant step in that
direction. In April, the ZigBee Alliance and the Thread Group
announced a joint effort to enable the ZigBee cluster library over
Thread networks. The cluster library is a set of primitives that describe device behaviors. It is not a turnkey application library, but
it is the building blocks for such a library. This joint effort does
not guarantee that ZigBee applications will operate on a Thread
network. Further collaboration is required to define the application library based on the cluster library. However, this is a good
first step for two organizations that have very complementary
needs ZigBee needs lightweight IP support and Thread needs
a robust application profile library. This relationship could eventually result in both organizations achieving their goals with an
added benefit of increasing industry cooperation and avoiding a
head-to-head standards battle.

PRODUCT PROFILE
Choosing Between Consumer and
Industrial Batteries
By Sol Jacobs Tadiran Batteries

To maximize the performance of a remote

wireless device, design engineers need to choose the ideal power supply based on
application-specific requirements, typically trying to achieve the
following goals:
Lower total cost of ownership taking into account the
cost of future battery replacements over time
Longer operating life battery-powered industrial devices may have to operate for decades without battery
replacement, and the annual self-discharge of the battery
can far exceed the energy consumed by the battery, demanding a high capacity battery
Maximum reliability so data integrity and communications cannot be compromised by dead batteries
Smaller size battery-powered instruments often have to
be miniaturized, demanding a battery that offers the highest energy density
Higher Voltage the higher the voltage, the fewer cells
are needed, which saves space and expense
Wider temperature range industrial devices are often
situated in extremely hot or cold places where ordinary
alkaline batteries may fail or prematurely self-discharge.
Where a battery is deployed greatly influences the choice of
power supply. For example, if the battery is easily accessible and
short life expectancy is acceptable, then consumer alkaline batteries may suffice despite their low voltage (1.5 V), narrow temperature range (-0C to 60C), high self-discharge rate, and crimped
seals. Having to replace alkaline batteries every few months also
increases the total cost of ownership.
Long-life applications generally demand lithium primary (nonrechargeable) batteries. Lithium is the lightest non-gaseous metal,
with a negative potential that exceeds all other metals, offering the
Primary cell

highest specific energy (energy per unit weight) and energy density (energy per unit volume) of all commercially available battery chemistries. Lithium cells have normal OCVs ranging from
2.7 to 3.6V. The electrolyte is also non-aqueous, which extends the
temperature range. The most common primary lithium chemistries
include: iron disulfate (LiFeS2); lithium manganese dioxide (LiMNO2); and bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCL2).
Bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCL2) batteries deliver the highest capacity and highest energy density of any lithium chemistry, with an annual self-discharge rate of less than 1
percent per year, the widest temperature range (-55C to 125C,
modifiable to -80C for the cold chain), and a glass-to-metal
hermetic seal.
Bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride batteries can be modified
to deliver high pulses to power advanced communications using
protocols such as ZigBee by combining a standard bobbin-type
LiSOCl2 cell with a patented Hybrid Layer Capacitor (HLC). The
battery and HLC work in parallel: the battery supplies long-term
low-current power in the 3.6 to 3.9 V nominal range, while the
single-unit HLC delivers high pulses, thus avoiding the balancing
and current leakage problems associated with supercapacitors.
How a lithium battery is manufactured greatly affects its performance. For example, a superior-grade bobbi-type LiSOCL2
battery can feature a self-discharge rate of just 0.7 percent per
year, enabling 40-year operating life. By contrast, an inferior
quality LiSOCL2 battery may only provide 10-year operating life
with an annual self-discharge rate of 2 to 3 percent per year.
Specifying a superior grade battery can reduce your total
cost of ownership by eliminating the expense for future
battery replacements.

make smart lighting as popular as normal LED lighting today. To
bring more products into general lighting market and to support
reasonable price to users are one of the best ways to create booming market in a short time. LEEDARSON would like to support
our partners to catch the potential business opportunity based on
the three stages of approaching method.

Leedarson, a World Class Provider of Lighting Solutions

For the stage one Good implementation, it is easy to sell and

tell users how to build their entry level application. With basic
connected products, users can use switch (remote control) to control those smart bulbs brightness and color temperature as their
like. Also can add a gateway and some bulbs and sensors to work
together with router to control those smart devices through app
installed at mobile phone or PAD for local control at the stage two
Better implementation. Leedarson would like to recommend
users to create several scenes or scenarios achieving manual control free application.

PRODUCT PROFILE
ZigBee Home Automation
Home Automation is a hot topic right now, with numerous
standards being proposed to provide connectivity to devices
in order that the residential environment can be more efficient
and more enjoyable.
ZigBee Home Automation is the preferred wireless connectivity
standard and uses the ZigBee PRO mesh networking stack, ensuring that hundreds of devices can connect reliably. The Home Automation profile provides functionality that allows home devices
to be controlled or monitored. This can be broken down into three
areas; 1) Securely commissioning devices into the network, 2)
providing data connectivity between devices and 3) Providing a
common language for communication between devices.
Security within the ZigBee network is handled by encrypting data
using the AES algorithm, seeded by a network security key. This
is chosen randomly by the network coordinator and is therefore
unique, protecting against casual interception of data. To make
commissioning simple and secure, NXPs nTAG NFC connected
tags can transfer the network information such as network key,
PANID, radio channel directly into the device before it is connected. Any Internet connection to the system can also be secured
using the A70x range of Secure elements to manage security
keys, encryption etc.

The common language that defines the interface to devices comes

from the ZigBee clusters. These are sets of commands that enable the device to be controlled according to its functionality. For
example, a monochrome dimmable light uses clusters for on/off,
Level control, and behaviour in scenes and groups, as well as
those allowing it to manage its membership of the network.
The JN5169 is a state-of-the-art wireless microcontroller, which
can implement both ZigBee and the end application. It combines
a 32 bit RISC microcontroller with a powerful radio with +10
dBm output power. Power consumption is just 13.5 mA in receive
mode. The flash memory is 512 kB, allowing over the air updates
without the need for expensive external flash memory.
The functionality offered by ZigBee Home Automation, enabled
by the NXP range of products gives ease of use, security and high
performance reliable networking and provides the bedrock of an
Internet of Things installation for the home.

MARKET NEWS
ZigBee Standards Will Be Used in More Than 80
Percent of 802.15.4 Unit Shipments in 2020
ZigBee continues to increase its share of the IEEE 802.15.4
and smart home markets, according to global technology research
firm ON World. In 2020, ZigBee standards will be used in 8 out
of 10 of the 802.15.4 chipset shipments.
ZigBee has always provided flexibility for developers and
now ZigBee is rapidly becoming the consumer technology of
choice for emerging smart home products, says Mareca Hatler,
ON Worlds research director. This trend is expected to accelerate as ZigBee 3.0 unifies its application profiles and the Thread
Group provides a standards based IP addressable wireless mesh
network layer.
Annual unit shipments for ZigBee/802.15.4 nearly doubled last
year and will increase by 550 percent during the next five years.
In addition to ZigBee PRO, the most widely adopted wireless
mesh network protocol, the ZigBee Alliance also certifies ZigBee RF4CE devices for simple, ultra-low power remote controls
and the ZigBee Alliance is also working on a new specification
for outdoor wireless mesh networking using IEEE 802.15.4g and

Combo ICs to Take 12 Percent of the 802.15.4
Market by 2019
The 802.15.4 wireless connectivity market is set to continue its
transition towards IP-enabled solutions, increasing from 6 percent of the market in 2015 to more than 30 percent by 2019, finds
ABI Research. Alongside this, the market share of combo ICs
from the total shipments of 802.15.4 chips is set to grow from 1
percent to more than 12 percent.
Emerging IP-enabled networking technologies such as Thread
are expected to take a significant proportion of the 802.15.4 market, most notably in the smart home, while the recent collaboration to enable the ZigBee Cluster Library to run over Thread
networks will bring about a more rapid development process and

ZigBee Resource Guide 2015-2016 Edition

With significant market opportunities for both ZigBee and

Thread, there is a growing incentive for suppliers to provide
a futureproof multi-protocol solution able to support the varied IoT device types down the line. It is becoming increasingly clear that the market for the connected home and other
low-power wireless networking environments will continue to
adopt multiple connectivity solutions based on different needs
and priorities. Although there is a clear trend towards IPv6 solutions, not every end device will need to support IP, and there
will be room for both IP and non-IP solutions across the various
IoT markets, said Malik Saadi, VP, Strategic Technology.
While it will take some time for 802.15.4 chipsets paired with
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to gain traction, in the short term there will
be significant opportunities for soft combos that integrate multiple 802.15.4 protocols on the same chip and use the same radio
layer. Notable products with this technology include GreenPeaks
GP712, a multi-protocol chipset supporting both ZigBee and
Thread packets.
In order to drive demand, reduce costs, and improve time to
market, suppliers need to have a connectivity portfolio large
enough to allow customers to support numerous protocols. In
the past, the majority of key Wi-Fi and Bluetooth IC suppliers have not provided an 802.15.4 solution, while 802.15.4
suppliers have not been aggressively pursuing Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, Saadi adds. Vendors with diversified connectivity portfolios encompassing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 802.15.4, and other
low-power wireless solutions, such as TI, Silicon Labs, STM,
Freescale, Nordic, Marvell and Microchip, will be able to take
advantage of these opportunities. These combo solutions will
become vital in providing the scalability and flexibility needed
to drive the smart home and other IoT vertical markets in the
near future.
