Give me something nice to eat.

Or we’ll play a trick on you! Halloween.
Halloween is celebrated on 31st October which is the day before a Christian festivity. In fact “Halloween” is
the shortened word for “All Hallows’ Eve“ (the evening before the day of All Saints).
But its origin dates back to the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain which marked the end of summer and
the last day of the year on the Celtic calendar. Samhain was the Celtic god of death and on October 31 st
people made big fires to frighten the spirits of evil and death. They stayed at home on that night because
they were afraid that the spirits of the dead returned to earth. For this reason they said that the streets
were full of ghosts, skeletons, witches, owls and black cats.
After the Roman invasion this day became a harvest festival.

The colours of Halloween are orange, which represents the harvest, and black which stands for death.

Today, in memory of these old legends, children and young people dress up in fancy costumes and masks.
American children play “Trick or Treat?” and many British kids have started to play the same game. In the
evening they go from door to door asking for a treat (sweets, biscuits, fruit or money) and if they do not
receive one they play a trick.
The Jack-o’-lantern.
The symbol of Halloween is the Jack-o’-lantern. It is a
pumpkin with a face and a candle inside.
Jack, an Irish ghost, was sent away from Heaven because
he was too spiteful.
That is why he walks the streets with a lantern.

Halloween si celebra il 31 ottobre che è il giorno prima di una Da’ qualcosa anche al mio amico
O ti faremo uno scherzetto!

Ma la sua origine risale all’ antica festa Celtica chiamata Samhain che segnava la fine dell’ estate e l’ ultimo
giorno dell’anno del calendario Celtico. Samhain era il dio Celtico della morte e il 31 ottobre la gente faceva
grandi fuochi per spaventare gli spiriti del male e della morte. Stava in casa quella notte perché aveva
paura che gli spiriti dei morti ritornassero sulla terra. Per questa ragione diceva che le strade erano piene di
fantasmi, scheletri, streghe, gufi e gatti neri.
Dopo l’invasione Romana questo giorno divenne la festa del raccolto.

I colori di Halloween sono arancione, che rappresenta il raccolto, e nero che sta per la morte.

Oggi, in memoria di queste vecchie leggende, i bambini e i giovani si travestono con costumi e maschere.
I bambini Americani giocano a “dolcetto o scherzetto?” e molti bimbi Britannici hanno iniziato a giocare
allo stesso gioco. Alla sera vanno di porta in porta chiedendo un dolcetto (caramelle,biscotti, frutta o
denaro) e se non ne ricevono uno fanno uno scherzetto.
