Trailing the
fall colors
When it comes to fall color tours, theres no place quite
like northern Michigan. There are a variety of nature
trails around the greater Cadillac area that can be done
either as a multi-day hike or as an easy walk after dinner
all of which provide a beautiful variety of fall colors.
Local outdoorsman Dave Foley said he expects the best
time for color tours will be from Oct. 5 through Oct. 15
this year.
For those looking for a picturesque hike, Foley said one
of the best places to go is the Manistee River Trail.
If I were going to pick one great hike, Id drive to Red
Bridge on the Manistee River, park there and walk on
the Manistee river trail for an out-and-back, Foley said.
Youve got the the trees reflected in the water and its really something.
Foley said you can walk for as long as you wish along
this trail, then walk back. However, the Manistee River
Trail connects with the North Country National Scenic
Trail to form a 23-mile loop trail that can be traveled on
for a couple days as well. According to the United States
Forest Service, the best places to access the loop are from
the Marilla and Upper River Road Trailheads for the
North Country National Scenic Trail and the Red Bridge
and Seaton Creek accesses for the Manistee River Trail.
The Manistee River Trail also features a waterfall near
the northern end of the trail is very popular with hikers;
and, according to the Forest Service, the Manistee River
Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail connector is also the site of the largest wooden suspension
bridge in Lower Michigan.
Foley said those looking for an easy after-dinner color
walk around Cadillac may enjoy visiting Waldeck Island,
an 11-acre preserve located on Stone Ledge Lake, just
south of Cadillac off M-115.
Another easy trail is the Heritage Nature Trail, which
starts at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center
and is about 2.5 miles long.
Thats a very easy trail to walk, very flat, Foley said.
They have these nature boards that talk about the area
right in front of you and it has a beautiful viewing stand
you can climb up on.
Foley also said time of day can play a role in ensuring

Leaves are starting to change, weather is getting crisp
and Halloween is just around the corner. That means
that local businesses like Geers Farm Pumpkin Patch
near McBain, Pahls Pumpkin Patch near Buckley, and
Norman Farms in Tustin are gearing up for some fall
fun.
What better time to head out and enjoy the season as
well as pick up a pumpkin and other fall decorations?
You can get lost in a corn maze or sample some delectable doughnuts and apple cider. For those who think that
sounds like a perfect weekend afternoon, youre in luck,
because the Cadillac area has four pumpkin patches
from which to choose.

The weekend of Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, Geers Farm will

dressed in costume will receive a prize.

Veterans Day is one federal holiday that stands for
something a little more in the Cadillac area.
Communities throughout the area will pause to recognize veterans on Friday, Nov. 11 originally Armistice
Day.
Cadillac
The Cadillac Area Honor Guard observes Veterans Day
at each of three sites within Cadillac.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., Veterans Memorial Stadium on Linden Street is the first stop. Once there, veterans
sing the national anthem, perform a 21-gun salute, play
Taps, lay a wreath, say a prayer and lower the flag to
half-staff.
At approximately 11 a.m. the ceremony is repeated at
the nearby Veterans Memorial on the shore of Lake Cadillac near the Keith McKellop Walkway. Following that,
a final stop is made at the flagpole and World War I gun
across from the Wexford County Courthouse, 437 E. Division St.

In April, the Footliters will perform Five Tellers Dancing in the Rain.
Southern sass, tears and charm engage as five bank tellers speak their hearts and brew lots of coffee in the break
room of a small bank in Mississippi.
This play eavesdrops on the conversations of women
about the men in their lives. Its a play about broken arms
and broken hearts and about finding strength and selfrespect through friendships with those who have been
down that road before.
Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on April 7, 8, 14, and
15. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. on April 15.
To round out the season, Footliters will delight audiences with a rendition of Little Shop of Horrors in June.
A Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi musical, the meek
floral assistant Seymour stumbles across a new breed of
plant he names Audrey II a foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who promises Seymour fame and fortune
to as long as he keeps feeding it blood.
Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on June 16, 17, 23,
and 24. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 24.
For more information, go to cadillacfootliters.com/ticket.html. Tickets are available at The UPS Store, Brinks
Custom Framing, Peebles, Majestic Hair Design in Lake
City, and After 26 Cafe.
All of the shows are scheduled to take place at the Cadillac High School Auditorium.

Christmas in the
Park kicks off
holiday
happenings
After a day of shopping or work, many
people in Cadillac will again come out
to the city park to sing carols, drink hot
chocolate and see Santa Claus.
On Friday, Nov. 25 Cadillac is scheduled
to kick off the holiday season with the
annual Christmas in the Park event. As in
past years, carols will be sung, the Salvation Army will sell hot chocolate and, of
course, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus make
their annual appearance.
First Baptist Church of Cadillac Rev.
Dave McMahon said things will be very
similar to events from years past.
This years festivities are scheduled
to begin at 5:30 p.m. The event also will
feature the lighting of the community
Christmas tree. The City Park and the
Keith McKellop Walkway will also be illuminated.
The event is free and will take place
rain, shine or snow. This year, kids who
visit with Santa will receive a goody bag.
In addition to Christmas in the Park,
Cadillac will be a great place for shopping
and other events on Thanksgiving weekend.
The first event Saturday is the third annual Toy Town Toy Trot. During the last
four years the 5K event raised more than
$25,000 for Toys for Tots. The 5K run/
walk will start on Lake Street between
the Rotary Pavilion and the City Park and
will head north around Lake Cadillac.
Cost to participate is $25.
Downtown merchants also will be open
and participating in Small Business Saturday. In years past, many downtown Cadillac businesses offered an open housetype atmosphere that could include musicians playing in some of the stores.
For more information about these
events go to www.cadillacmichigan.com.

ter months, Houk said since the ice is made out of a synthetic material, it could be used year-round, if desired.
Wallace said the synthetic material has a very similar
feeling to ice when being skated upon, but with slightly
more resistance.
You might notice being tired out a little sooner than
you normally would skating on ice, Wallace said.
Visitors will have to bring their own skates and equipment when using the ice rink but Wallace said the city
may eventually start a rental program.
The fireplace will emit about 250 BTUs of energy. It will
be pretty hot, Houk said. Which is why we needed to
build a barrier between those outside and the fire.
There are benches placed several feet away from the
structure so people can sit down and enjoy the warmth on
a cold day.
While it will not burn wood, Wallace said there likely
will be a visible flame inside the fireplaces hearth. Separating the flame from the outside is glass on all sides.

He added that those looking to ride for a little bit then stop
for a bite to eat or to rest may like trail 37 as well.
Richard said those looking for a longer ride may enjoy the
White Pine Trail since it goes down through Tustin and LeRoy toward the southern part of the state.
The Tustin area is also very scenic and beautiful, he said.
Richard also said the various trails that are maintained by
Cadillac Winter Promotions have confidence signs on them
to indicate you are still on the trail as well as You Are Here
maps in various locations.
We do have signs out there that point for gas, food and
lodging as well, Richard said.
Trail maps can also be purchased at a variety of hotels
and restaurants locally, including Pilgrim Village and Boon
Store. For a complete list of where to purchase a map or for
further details about the trails, visit www.cadillacwinterpromotions.org.
Arjay Schopieray, deputy for Wexford County Sheriffs Department, said another trail that is very easy to get to locally
is the Trailhead for Trail 5, which is just south of Lake Cadillac off of Hector Road. He said to get there, take M-155 to 44
Road; then go east o 44 Road.
Judy Wing, treasurer for Cadillac Winter Warriors Snowmobile Club, said The Cadillac trails are some of the best
trails in the northern lower peninsula and they are all very
easy, very enjoyable. You set your own speed. You just need to
be careful to not exceed your own capability. Theyre all beautiful and theyre all fun.
Maps of other trails can by found on a county-by-county
basis at www.michigan.gov/dnr.

Missaukee Mountain
For a free and fun sledding excursion, Missaukee Mountain is the place to be.
There is one hill at the Missaukee County location dedicated to sledding. There is no charge to use the hill, but
there are no equipment rentals, either.
Missaukee Mountain, 6500 W. Walker Road (M-66), offers
downhill and cross-country skiing as well as sledding. It
is open weekends and school holidays. For more information, call (231) 839-7575.
Diggins Hill
For many years, Diggins Hill has been a winter destination for locals.
While it has changed over the years, one thing has re-
46
SpringHill Camps
Beginning in January people will be able to take advantage of a weekly sledding opportunity in Evart.
Every winter SpringHill Camps hosts weekly events. The
weekly events are weather-dependent and usually begin
after Christmas. Once they begin, the events are 2 to 5 p.m.
every Sunday.
The Evart camp, located at 7717 95th Avenue, is a nonprofit Christian camp and retreat ministry that offers multiple outdoor opportunities. Sledding is a big draw during
the winter.
The hill used is 150 feet wide and 400 feet long. There also
is a magic carpet that takes sledders to the top of the hill.
