All the boron trihalides except B3 may be prepared by direct reaction between the elements.
Boron trihalides consist of trigonal - planar BX3 molecules. Unlike the halides of the other elements
in the group they are monomeric in the gas, liquid and solid states. BF3 and BCl3 are gases, BBr3
is a volatile liquid and B3 is a solid. Boron trihalides are Lewis acids because they form simple
Lewis complexes with suitable bases, as in the reaction
BF3 (g) + :NH3 (g) F3B NH3 (s)
However, boron chlorides, bromides and iodides are susceptible (sensitive) to protolysis by mild
proton sources such as water, alcohols and even amines for example BCl3 undergoes rapid
hydrolysis:
BCl3 (g) + 3H2O() B (OH)3 (aq)+ 3HCl (aq)
It is supposed that the first step in the above reaction is the formation of the complex
Cl3B OH2 which then eliminates HCl and reacts further with water.
23.

Which of the following is the correct prediction about observed BX bond length, in BX3 molecules
(A) BF bond length in BF3 is found to be less than theoretical value because the electronegativity
values of B(2.04) and F(4.0) suggest the bond to be ionic and hence the attraction between
oppositely charged ions must decrease the bond length
(B) BF3 and [BF4] have equal BF bond length
(C) The decrease in the BF bond length in BF3 is due to delocalised p p bonding between
vacant 2p orbital of B and filled 2p orbital of F.
(D) The correct BX bond length order is BF > BCl > BBr > B

Paragraph for Question Nos. 25 to 26

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions.
Reaction intermediates : Reaction intermediates are short lived species and are highly reactive.
They are formed by heterolytic and homolytic bond dissociation. There are various types of
reaction intermediates in which the most important are carbocation, carbanion and free radical.
Carbocation is an organic species which has a carbon atom bearing six electron in its outermost
orbit and has a positive charge on it. The stability of carbocation can be increased by positive
inductive effect or hyperconjugation. If -atom with respect to carbocation has one or more lone
pair of electrons then lone pair of electron strongly stabilise a carbocation due to delocalisation.
Anion of carbon is called carbanion. Carbanion carries three bond pairs and one lone pair. The
stability of carbanion can be increased by negative inductive effect and negative mesomeric effect.
Free radical is a species which bears seven electrons in its outmost orbit. The stability of free
radical can be increased by hyperconjugation and resonance.
