Present Perfect Tense and Past Simple
The present perfect tense is used to talk about events that are related to now. We
dont know exactly when this events happened but they are usually recent
events.
We have developed a problem which we are working on that moment.
The Past Simple is used to talk about events which are finished. It is often marked
with words such as yesterday, in 1982, last month, twenty minutes ago.
I tried to contact the Coastguard about an hour ago but there was no response.
Read these sentences. Circle the most appropriate tense, Present Perfect or Past
Simple.
1. I have studied/I studied Spanish at school but I have forgotten/I forgot all of it
now.
2. The rain has stopped/The rain stopped half an hour ago but the crew hasnt
started/the crew didnt start loading yet.

The Present perfect is often used with the words yet, already, just, still, and
always. Choose the correct word to complete the definition below.
1. .has two meaning. It means before now and is usually
used in positive sentences.
He has checked the fire fighting equipment.
The ship has left the port.
2. .. means a very short time ago.

3. .. means until now and is usually used in questions and
negative sentences.

5. means up to and including now and expresses the
speakers surprise or annoyance. It is most often used in negative sentences.

Cause and Effects can be described in a number of ways, using different verbs or
