Nili Brosh Biography

Nili Brosh is a world-renowned guitarist who is at the forefront of leading a new generation of passionate
and gifted musicians. With two solo albums released and a resume boasting performances with some
of the greatest musicians in the world, Nili sets an incredibly high standard for musicianship and
professionalism in the world of guitar.
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Nili moved to Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 12. Later, Nili attended
Berklee College of Music, where she founded the Nili Brosh Band. Even with a loaded class and gig
schedule, she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2009 and subsequently became one of the youngest
faculty members in the Berklee Summer Guitar Programs.
In 2010, Nili released her debut instrumental album entitled "Through The Looking Glass", which
featured members of her band along with a guest appearance by famed guitarist Andy Timmons. In the
following few years, she joined The Iron Maidens for countless performances in the US, and became a
member of Tony MacAlpine (Steve Vai, Planet X, CAB)'s band, touring the US, Europe, and Mexico. She
has also made guest appearances with Andy Timmons, Stu Hamm, Guthrie Govan, The Aristocrats,
and has opened for Yngwie Malmsteen on his 2013 "Spellbound" US tour. In 2014, Nili (as a band
member of the Tony MacAlpine Band) made EMGtv history by recording the first full live EMGtv DVDa
full performance of Tonys latest release Concrete Gardens. During this recording, she also shared the
stage with Jeff Loomis (Nevermore, Arch Enemy) on the song Square Circles. In addition to the widely
successful performances, Nili also recorded her own solo material live with the network. Currently, her
solo performances on EMGtv have achieved a viral success of popularity and attention. She recently
released her second album entitled "A Matter of Perception", featuring a heavyweight rhythm section
including Virgil Donati, Bryan Beller, Marco Minnemann, Stu Hamm, Aquiles Priester, and others.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Nili continues to perform her original material with her Nili Brosh Band
while maintaining a touring schedule of shows and clinics. In 2015 alone, she has performed shows and
conducted guitar clinics in the United States, Mexico, and Colombia as well as became a regular
contributor for the popular Premier Guitar Magazine. In a world of guitar players, Nili has solidified
herself as a powerhouse leader among the greatest guitarists ever.
Nili endorses Ibanez guitars, EMG pickups, Dunlop/MXR products, Xotic effects, and Dean
Markley strings.

Thats what took time to get the mental

space from it for awhile, or get out of the haze
long enough to be objective. That was tough. It
had to be over a long period of time. Once you
get into that head space, it colors everything
else. I think I did a good job of picking out
what needed work. Im happy with it now, but
it took a long time.
When you perform, you seem to always
be at the top of your game.

I can never let myself go below a certain

standard. Theres an idea of me out there, and
if I tank at a show, thats going to be really bad
(laughs)! Im not really a practice-regimen
kind of person, but, after playing with Tony for
two years, I figured out how to get cleaner on
the stuff I wasnt nailing. It was a lot of using
a metronome in a specific way. Once I figured
out how to do it, it became a strong thing to
fall back on. I relied on it working for every
show. You cant be sloppy in Tony MacAlpines
band, because he never is.

There arent many women playing progressive metal. How did you come to it?

It first came through my brother, Ethan, both

for early influences, being around someone
who was doing that, and seeing what it takes
to practice that kind of thing. Thats how I
learned it early on. I always took to learning
things by ear. Once I was able to do that, I tried
to learn everything I could get my hands on.
Thats where that obsessive component of
my personality comes in. If Im working on
something that I really like, I will not be able
to stop playing it. I will overplay it, so when
the next week comes around, I will not want
to play it any more (laughs). Thats where the
practice never becomes an issue, because I get
excited about something and want to get it right.

NILI BROSH

Youre a fan of the Peavey JSX Joe Satriani head.

f you saw Tony MacAlpine on his most

recent tour, you probably noticed a young
woman accompanying him on a seven-string
guitar. Berklee grad Nili Brosh effortlessly
harmonized with MacAlpine, and when asked,
played some wicked solos. She recently finished
her second solo album, A Matter Of Perception,
an inspiring work full of volcanic soloing,
brutal time signatures, and a top-tier rhythm
section. When Brosh takes the spotlight, the
results are impressive.
A Matter Of Perception has some of the
best progressive metal to come along in
years. But, you filmed your documentary
while making it wherein you mention undergoing a psychological catharsis.

The JSX is my rig for this project. With

Tony, it made more sense to use a Hughes &
Kettner head. Im working on getting a tour
together for A Matter Of Perception, and Im
most likely going to use the JSX. Live, it behaves
differently than it has in the studio. Its a great
head, I just havent had enough opportunities
yet to dial it in, live.

It was. Thats why I did the documentary.

I never get the chance to tell people what its
all about and what inspired the title. I realized
that it would be important for me to have my
moment to tell people. I created a platform for
myself to do that if people were interested in
watching it. I went through all of that. I know
I took it too seriously, and it drove me crazy.

Now that this psychological catharsis has

come to a close, can you take a deep breath?

Once it started being a problem, I had to ask

myself, Do I not like this because I really dont
like it? Or do I not like this because another
section in another song I didnt like colored
everything? Thats when it got difficult. I would
find one thing I didnt like, and it was coloring
the way I was feeling about every other thing
I wrote. Getting out of that was really tough.

Yeah, but there are other things to obsess

about (laughs). It never ends, but you just have
to let it go, which Ive been working on. The
writing stuff has come to an end for now. Ive
been cool with that for a while. When I started
recording it, I was done writing. I knew this
was it. Im going to be pushing the record as
much as I can, doing some shows, and seeing
where it takes me. Oscar Jordan

Eight years ago, guitarist Nili Brosh, a teenager
attending the Berklee College of Music,
uploaded one minute and 25 seconds of herself
performing a Guthrie Govan solo. She did it
without ego or lofty dreams of stardom, but soon
became an Internet sensation.

Justin Bieber isnt the only musician who knows how to

harness the power of YouTube. When she was 18, Nili
Brosh posted a video called Guthrie Govan solo played
by 18 year old girl. Her dexterity and ability stunned
viewers, and her video went viral, landing her an
endorsement with Inspire Guitars.
Four years and 178,000 video views later, Brosh has
matured into a pro player and instructor. In fact, shes one
of youngest faculty members in the Berklee College of
Music summer guitar programs, where she has been
teaching since age 19.
In 2010 Brosh released her self-titled debut instrumental
album, which features guitar legend Andy Timmons as a
guest soloist, and the rhythm section of her own Nili Brosh
Band. Today Brosh is poised to head out with guitar
monster Tony MacAlpine as a member of his touring band.

Today, Brosh is an internationally recognized

and respected guitarist. She is a touring
member of the Tony MacAlpine band, performs
with own group, and often plays with popular
tribute band The Iron Maidens. She released
her debut album, Through The Looking Glass,
in 2010, and followed it four years later with
A Matter of Perception, on which she is joined
by A-list musicians such as Bryan Beller, Marco
Minnemann, and Virgil Donati.
Nili Brosh was born in Rishon Le Zion, Israel,
and relocated to Newton, Mass., with her family
when she was 12. At age 19, she became one
of the youngest summer program instructors at
Berklee, and graduated with honors from the
internationally acclaimed school. Her brother
Ethan is also a guitarist; she joined him on tour
when his instrumental band opened for
Yngwie Malmsteen. -Guitar Girl Magazine

But training, hard work and perseverance aside, Brosh

just has the gift. Maybe its genetics. Maybe its just that
this woman really loves the guitar. Or maybe its a little bit
of both. -Guitar World Magazine

I met this 12 year old Extreme fan a few years back, and
watched her mature into this incredibly gifted guitar player.
More than anything else, her fluidity and sense of melody
is impressive. Its reassuring to know that the next
generation of guitar is in good hands. What is it with guitar
players whose names have four letters, and begin with N?
Im a fan.
-Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen)

Nili has an incredible feel in her playing. She is a

phenomenal musician of great maturity, and such a cool
person. -Jason Becker
(Solo artist, Cacophony, David Lee Roth)

I had the pleasure of playing with Nili at a

show in Boston. She showed up and had my
tunes down cold with a great tone and brought
her own mojo to my tunesdefinitely a
guitarist to keep and eye and ear on!
-Stu Hamm (Bassist Joe Satriani,
Frank Gambale)

Odds are pretty good that you havent heard of
Nili Brosh. After youve watched and listened to
her, youll never forget her. Before I review her
debut CD, Through The Looking Glass, I think I
should give you a rundown of Nilis attributes
that make her the complete package:

Nili Brosh takes the phrase playing like a girl and turns it
on its ear. This new album weaves the kind of muscular
soloing, graceful melodies, and strenuous time signatures
that would send most men running to the woodshed. The
genre is instrumental prog-metal, and performing in Tony
MacAlpines band for two years has made Brosh
dangerous.
Fat single-note lines support wide interval licks that
seamlessly blend fluid legato, speedy alternate picking,
and compositional two-handed tapping. The title track along
with The Spring Tune is a transcendental voyage that
swoops and careens though rhythmic peaks and valleys.
She gets support from the prodigious talents of Stu Hamm,
Bryan Beller, Anthony Crawford, Marco Minnemann, and
Virgil Donati to name a few.
Smooth overdriven tones give way to clean jazz soloing on
Double Entendre, while the anthemic Silence Of
Saturday showcases angelic chord voicings and close
harmony.
The album conjures sci-fi and fantasy dreamscapes, but
within its theatricality, Brosh infuses a sense of beauty and
lyricism. Her cover of Virgil Donatis Alien Hip Hop is
sheer perfection. Broshs CD is the best instrumental progmetal record of the year. -Vintage Guitar Magazine

With blazing technique, killer tone and serious onstage

attitude, Nili Brosh blew me away the first time I saw her
play, keeping up note-for-note with Tony MacAlpine and
hardly breaking a sweat doing it. Her talent is only matched
by her dedication, and I cant wait to see what she does
next. -Bryan Beller (Bassist Steve Vai, Joe Satriani
Dethklok, The Aristocrats)

Brains: You could say that shes the female

Doogie Houser of music with a B.M.,
Professional Music, from Berklee College of
Music as well as the youngest summer faculty
member to teach there, having started teaching
at the tender age of 19.
Talent: There is no question that this girl can
blow almost anyone off the stage with her
incredible talent on the guitar. Catch one of her
shows or videos on YouTube and youll be quick
to agree with me.
Beauty: While she is brimming with intellect and
talent, Ms. Broshs beauty will captivate her
audience while giving them an audio lobotomy.
Have I piqued your interest? Good. Now Ill
tell you about her disc.
If youll first read the liner notes of the disc,
youll be given some handy info that Ive never
seen on a disc before: counter indicators for
who is doing which solos within a tune
(i.e., Andy Timmons Guitar Solo on track
7 (2:48 3:42)). I love it!
Youll want to order this CD now! In fact, this
would be a great stocking stuffer or gift for the
music nuts in your life. If I didnt already own
this gem, I would be dropping heavy hints to my
family to make sure that Santa Claus dropped
this CD down our chimney.
In addition to purchasing Through The Looking
Glass at www.nilibrosh.com and by downloading
it from iTunes (click on the icon, above), the CD
can also be purchased at CD Baby, Guitar Nine
and AbstractLogix. While youre at Nili's website,
check out her blog and see if shes going to be
appearing somewhere near you. Trust me:
shell be a real treat to watch and listen to.
