mother, Julie passed away yesterday.

Please also remember the Burford family in your prayers as Mrs Margaret Burford

passed away last week. Margaret is a past pupil and has had a continued association
with Stella Maris.

Chess State Finals Stella Maris places third

On Monday 19th September 8 Stella students, Eden, Damian, Kye, Daniel, Shyaam,
Sharrukesh, Taso and Tyson, went to Launcestons Scoth-Oakburn College to
participate in the state chess finals.

Both primary and secondary schools were present. Of the 17 primary schools who

participated in the competition and, after each participant played a taxing 9 games of

chess, Stella came 3rd in overall points scoring 23 points. Princes Street Primary School

from Hobart came 1st, 4 points ahead of Stella. Second place was The Friends School on
25.5 and in 4th place, a point behind Stella, was Mind Moves Chess School on 22.5, so a
close competition. One point is awarded for a win, a point for a draw and zero for a
loss. Out of a possible score of nine, Damian and Tyson, scored 6 points, Eden and

Taso, Daniel and Shyaam scored 5.5 points, Kye 5 points and Sharrukesh 4.5 points.

These boys were ranked 12th, 14th and 18th 21st , 26th, 28th, 31st and 43rd respectively, out of
the 88 participants.

THANK YOU to Reg Harvey. Reg gives up his time each Thursday afternoon to provide
some chess coaching to the senior chess students.

CONGRATULATIONS on a fantastic effort from all of the boys. They all experienced
some wins and losses and there were a couple of draws. The boys displayed excellent

sportsmanship and perseverance. They were well mannered at all times and their overall
behaviour was a credit to Stella Maris.

We look forward to continuing our growth in chess in 2017.

Dare To Step Out And Make A Difference

We are very proud of our Grade 6 students. Although we have elected student leadership
positions such as the Student Representative Council (SRC), Library Monitors, Sports
Leaders and House Captains, we believe that ALL Grade 6 students are leaders.

At the recent Kinder interviews, Grade 6 students showed new Parents around our school.
I have received many positive comments from Parents about their welcoming manner, their
good manners and their obvious pride in our school.
This is an example of a letter we received:

We would like to say a huge thank you to Anabelle and Dylan for showing
us around Stella yesterday. What an amazing job they did showing us
their school and answering our questions. And, what a unique insight into
the school, from a grade 6's perspective! They were both so well spoken
and friendly, Pax now won't stop talking about the two new big friends
he made at school!

The SRC meets each week to discuss students ideas. Each year they decide on a number
of fundraisers for charity. They decided on a Crazy Hair Day this Friday for Melbourne
Childrens hospital a very worthy cause.

opportunity of the holiday break to have a spring clean

and drop any donated items into our school from 10th
October onwards.
FLOUR POWER CAKE STALL: Cakes and candy cannot
compare to the sweetness of your donations. Please help us
to make our cake stall a tasty success with donations of
baked goods, fresh produce and preserves.

We are also taking donations of baking ingredients to help us

make and bake. Please place ingredients in the box at

the front office.

SRC: Newsflash

FOOTY COLOURS and CRAZY HAIR DAY

Yes that is right, this Friday (the last day of term three), ALL students are invited to

come to school dressed in their favourite footy colours and to wear a crazy hairstyle.

During assembly we, the SRC, dressed in our favourite footy colours and wore crazy
hair to show examples of just how easy it is. Everyone that does choose to dress up is

to bring along a gold coin donation. Money raised will be going to the Royal Childrens
Hospital in Melbourne. We decided to raise money for the hospital as some of our

friends and school members have been looked after here during our Stella journey.
Kinders Footy Colour and Crazy Hair day will be held Thursday 22nd September.
