11400 TEU

Container ships are used worldwide for transporting cargo that can
be fitted inside different containers. Usually smaller container ships are
called feeders and are used to carry containers between ports that are
close to each other. Bigger container ships are used in longer voyages
due to their efficiency. It is proven that the bigger the ship the higher the
efficiency as long as the ship is carrying at full capacity or almost full.
The ship we are going to talk about is 11400 TEU which means that
it can carry 11400 twenty foot equivalent unit standard containers. Of
course there are different type of containers but the most common
containers that are in use are TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) and FEU
(forty foot equivalent unit).
The ship has around 135000 DWT and the container are loaded
inside the cargo holds and on top of the deck up to 6-7 stacks of
containers. The containers are loaded and unloaded during the berthing
of the ship according to a cargo plan received from the shore and
checked by the officers on board to avoid any faulty loading or unloading
that can affect the ships stability or worse, breaking of the ship.
This ship is powered by 5 diesel generators of which three have a
power of 2300 KW and the other two 2800 KW. The main engine is a
slow speed engine with a long stroke of the piston, 12 pistons in line and
a power of 72200 KW with a fixed pitch propeller.
Most container ships that are undergoing in long voyages have a
fixed line and have a very strict schedule. Usually there is a time delay
between ships which is settled according to the request on the market.
Working hours on board differ according to the department you are
working for. Usually the deck department officers have fixed watch
keeping hours form 8-12; 12-16; 16-20; 20-24; 24-04; 04-08. The engine
room officers work form 8-12 have one or two hours lunch break and
after that will go back to work from 14-18. Every day one engineer will be
on duty, this means he will have to respond to any alarms during the
unattended period of the machinery space. In case any alarms occur
during the night he will intervene and fix the problem if possible. If the

problem is critical to the safety of the ship all engineers will be called and
assist to solve the problem.
Before arrival or departure of the ship the engine room must be
informed to make the necessary preparations. In case the ship arrives or
departs at a time when the machinery space is unattended the deck
department will inform the duty engineer one hour before the start of the
maneuver.
During the port calls seafarers that are not during the working
schedule can go visit the city near the port or the seamans club.
