Dear Alisa,
Hi' My name is Joanne. I live in Seattle Washington. I have brown eyes, dark
brown hair and I am 5 feet tall. My hobbies are shoppin g at the mall , going out
to dinner with my mom, anc. visiting my grandma. Oh yes, I love to play

Do you have malls? Here in Seattle, malls are big covered places with
hundreds of stores. I meet my friends there sometimes. The malls also have
big movie theatres. You can go inside a mall and not know that it is rainy or
snowy or sunny outside.
We have 4 seasons: summer, fall, winter and spring . In summer, it's hot and
dry. In fall, it's cool and it rains. In winter, it is very cold an d it rains for days.
Sometimes it snows . In spring, it gets warmer (60 degrees F.) and it rains .
The major businesses here are Boeing, Microsoft and Nintendo America.
People are crazy about coffee and bagels he re. There are stores for them
everywhere! I would like to hear what a typical day is like for you as well as
your likes and dislikes.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Question 4

T here was a time when playin g outdoors was normal for ch ildren growing up in the evenings.
Children would be out run ning and playing . Basketball, football , badminton, ping pong, tag, police
an d thief were some of 1he sports and games we played .
Nowadays , it see ms like it is not so common for children to be out playing, especially in the cities .
A survey carri ed out by a local unive rsity and a multi-national company on about 11,400 children
fo und that more than 50% of them were not interested in sports . Only 25% of the chil dren prefer
physical activities during their leisure time, whereas 38% prefe r sedentary activ ities su ch as
watching tel evision and digital activities
Besides television s and computers. parents today also worry about th eir children bei ng distracted
by smart phones and tablets. 11 is common these days to see children with their eyes and fingers
glued to these gadgets everywhere, even at the dinner tab le.
Children who were born afte r th e coming of internet prefer spending time indoors with a computer
rather than stepping outdoors for real physical actions. These children had never known a world
without the intern et. Ch ildren nowadays seem to be born with the ability to swipe and double click
before they even learn to read and Write.
Unfortunately, this lack of physical activity along with poor eating habits has led to childh ood obesity,
wh ich is linked to chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart problems and cancer. Th is has also led
to poor academic performance and social problems.
To overcome th e unhealthy lifestyle among our youth s, we need to brin g the "sport play" factor
back into their lives. According to Dr. Farah Hani, a former national gymnast, for children to be
healthy, they must not only eat right but they must have physical activity. She also be lieves th at
playing sports helps children learn important life values.

Question 5

Read the poem below carefully. Then, answer questions (a) - (d).
Leisure
By Wi lliam Henry Davies

What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like stars at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began .

A poor life this is if, full of care ,

We have no time to stand and stare .

thinking skills to reflect depth and maturity of thinking by giving ideas, reasons and

The emphasis is on how well the response fulfils the set task and the level of language used.
Accuracy of language in terms of grammar, sentence structures and mechanics of

Award '0' mark when there is

no response or response written in language other than
English; or
mindless lifting of irrelevant chunks from other sources including rubric

When awarding marks, apply the 'best fit' principle. No script will fit neatly into any one of the
bands. To determine the appropriate mark, identify the band the response belongs to and refer
to the criteria in the band. Examiners should assess the script holistically and always refer
to the coordinated scripts for consistency.
