Nonfiction Literary Terms

Directions: Copy down the literary terms in your English notebook. Leave space for the
definition of the term. Copy any definitions given. Then, look up the other words in the Literary
Terms Handbook in your textbook (R6).
1. Anecdote
2. Argument- a statement, or series of statements, for or against something supported by evidence
3. Biography
4. Conclusion- an opinion or decision that is formed after a period or thought or research
5. Counterargument- an opposing point of view to another argument
6. Expository- writing that seeks to explain
7. Evidence- something that is used to support an argument (facts, statistics, quotes, anecdotes,
examples)
8. Nonfiction
9. Persuasion
10. Purpose- the reason why something is done or used
11. Summary- a statement presenting the main points
