This SUBJECT ISAT requires integrated application of competence and is executed under strict
assessment conditions. This ISAT is in line with the Trade Test used in artisan assessments that
is undertaken in the world of work. A student who will be deemed competent in this ISAT will be
able to do electrical work at a construction site where house wiring is done under the supervision
of an accredited person.
His / her duties will be among others to:
Draw up or interpret plans, drawings and circuit diagrams.
Wire and commission a single phase domestic installation.
2.

Scope of the ISAT

The following topics are covered in this ISAT:

Wire and commission a single phase domestic installation.
Test and inspect a single phase domestic installation.
Operate on low voltage networks.
Understand and maintain lighting systems.
The following competencies will be assessed:
An understanding of Technical (Electro-mechanical) principles.

SECTION 2: INSTRUCTIONS TO LECTURERS

1.

Study the ISAT task described in SECTION 1.

2.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS must be given to each student and sufficiently in

advance for preparations and fulfilment of the ISAT task.

3.

This ISAT task is an individual task and no help from any person outside is allowed.

4.

All the equipment of this ISAT must be given to the student.

5.

Carefully note the requirements of the Assessment Tools provided in SECTION 3.

6.

All arrangements for ordering of consumables, preparation of workshops and simulation

areas, staff deployment, added facilities and requirements, record sheets, answer sheets,
etc. must be made in advance to ensure the successful conduct of the ISAT.

7.

Student performance in the ISAT must conclude with a record of the students
performance as provided in SECTION 4.

8.

Ensure that the student understands the evaluation criteria.

9.

Ensure that the student understands the competence descriptors of the assessment
rubrics (attached).

10.

This ISAT assesses the various skills attained in the optional vocational subject. Each
lecturer is to ensure that during the year, students have sufficient practice to master the
skills and knowledge required to complete the ISAT.

11.

A judgement of competent or higher will only be achieved if the students project is

functional.

12.

The lecturer must assess the project in stages as indicated in paragraph (Instructions to
students) to ensure that valid and authentic assessment that measures the skills,
knowledge, attitude and values (SKAV) required by the task, takes place.

13.

The ISAT forms part of the students promotional mark and therefore must be conducted
under examination conditions in a simulated or structured environment.

-2SUBJECT: Electrical Systems & Construction, Level 3

2011 2013

BACKGROUND
This practical application task tests your ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the
Electrical Infrastructure and Construction Level 3. The work required of you in this Integrated
Summative Assessment Task (ISAT) is an important and compulsory component of your studies.
You are required to:
Study the task carefully.
Note the time allocations per task.
Pay careful attention to the mark allocated per section and the total.
Study the resources required.
Note the elements of the Assessment Tools that will be used to evaluate your
performance in each subtask.

This is to ensure that you prepare sufficiently for the

conduct of the ISAT.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK
Carry out the installation work on the surface of the wooden panel, according to FIGURE 1
below. The ISAT consists of four subtasks.
SUBTASK 1: Planning and dimensioning
SUBTASK 2: Conduit work
SUBTASK 3: Wiring work
SUBTASK 4: Cable ends made off

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TASK

SUBTASK 1: Planning and dimensioning

1.

Measure the dimensions as indicated on FIGURE 1 and mark off on the panel.

2.

Use the installation work diagram (FIGURE 1) and draw the line circuit of the conduit
pipes.

3.

Check whether conductors of different circuits will reach a common destination.

4.

Mount the components on to the wooden panel.

5.

Call your lecturer to assess this stage.

-3SUBJECT: Electrical Systems & Construction, Level 3

2011 2013

SUBTASK 2: Conduit work

Refer to the labelling on FIGURE 1.
1.

L1, L2, P1 and S1 must be wired in PVC conduit.

2.

S2 must be wired in steel conduit.

3.

Pipes must not be damaged when bent.

4.

When secured, conduit pipes must be vertical and horizontal throughout.

5.

All sections must be saddled.

6.

Call your lecturer to assess this stage.

SUBTASK 3: Wiring work

1.

The circuit must be wired such that S1 and S2 must independently control L1 (e.g. twoway switching).

2.

L2 to be controlled by a photocell switch.

3.

SO denotes the position of a 16-amp socket outlet which must be wired using a surfix
cable.

4.

The outer insulation of the surfix cable must not extend for more than 8mm inside the plug
box.

5.

The installation layout must be so arranged that the conduits do not cross each other.

6.

Do not secure switches, plugs and lights to the metal or PVC boxes.

7.

Call your lecturer to assess this stage

SUBTASK 4: Cable ends made off

1.

Carefully remove the insulation on armoured cable.

2.

Using a hacksaw cut the armouring all around the cable.

3.

Remove the inner insulation to expose the conductors.

4.

Remove the insulation around each conductor.

5.

Secure the armouring in the gland and tighten the gland.

6.

Fasten the armoured cable to the bottom of the distribution board for the supply.

7.

Call your lecturer to assess this stage.
