Welcome to the Design Systems Module

Welcome to the Design

Systems Module
What is the Design Systems Module
PROCADs Design Systems module is one of four modules within the Component Designer.
It is a convenient interface for creating and editing custom component faces and defining
allowed connections for use within PROCAD 3DSMART or PROCAD 3DSMART+s
Modeler application.
The Design Systems Module is used to:

Create new mating face types

Define allowable connections within a single design system
Define allowable connections between design systems

Getting Started
When you install PROCAD 3DSMART or PROCAD 3DSMART+, the software create a
shortcut icon on your desktop or Start menu.

Activating Design Systems Module

In order to enter the Design Systems module from the main Component Designer module,
the Library Design module, you need to select Design Systems from the Tools menu.

It is also possible to dock any or all of the five Component Designer tools. These tools may
be docked on top of each other, creating a tabbed pane, or may be docked separately. These
tools include:

The Navigation pane opens when you open the Design Systems Module. It contains a list
of Design System Groups and their related Design System objects.
The Data pane opens when you open the Design Systems Module. It displays information

Definitions
Design System Objects
Design System Groups

Design Systems

Design Systems are defined groups of components that have specific catalogues of
dimensional information available. These are standards that are recognized within various
industries. Examples of individual Design Systems are ANSI piping, Swagelok piping, and
Cable Tray systems. These systems represent real world objects that have norms for
behaviour such as connections.
Design System Groups are a set of Design Systems that all of similar type objects that have
similar types of behaviour. For example, while ANSI and Plastic piping have differences,
they have similar component types such as elbows, tees, and pipe, which have similar
connecting behaviours.
Generic Mating Faces These are connection types that have been defined by PROCAD
Software. This information resides in the Master database, and can therefore be
used within all libraries that use the Design System Group where the mating face
resides.
Custom Mating Faces Connection types that are defined by the user. In order to ensure
that libraries may be transferable, custom mating faces are stored within each
library.

Database Definitions
Database Management System (DBMS) This is the software itself that is hosting the
databases. For PROCAD 3DSMARTs Component Designer, this must be
Microsofts SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE), SQL Server Express 2008, SQL Server
2008, SQL Server Express 2012 or SQL Server 2012.
Page 5

PROCAD 3DSMART Design Systems Module User Guide

Navigation

In the Navigation pane, the DBMS is represented at the top of the hierarchy
as PROCAD 3DSMART Installations on SQL Server.

SQL Server (Instance) The term SQL Server is used to describe a complete

database environment, including the data structure, libraries, procedures and

other functionality. It is most commonly used when administrators describe
multiple instances of the same database.
For example, an organization might have three different instances: production
(used to contain live data that is actively being used to produce PROCAD
3DSMART Models), pre-production (used to test new components created in
the Component Designer prior to release into production) and development
(used by component creators to create new libraries and components to
expand upon PROCAD 3DSMARTs current list of objects).
In the Navigation pane, the SQL Servers will always be at the second level of
the hierarchy, directly under the PROCAD 3DSMART Installations on SQL
Server. The
SQL Server is listed by its Instance name.

Library (Database) The term library is synonymous with the term database, and
refers to a collection of related records. For example, the ANSI Piping Library is a
collection of information such as dimensions, properties, and relationships that all
pertain to ANSI piping objects.

In the Navigation pane, Libraries are one level below SQL Servers.

Component Library Object Definitions

Component library objects are arranged in a hierarchical manner, with objects lower down
the object tree inheriting information from the object above. This can also be thought of as a
parent-child relationship between the hierarchy levels.

Component Type (Root Level)

Component Type (Intermediate Level)
Component Type (Leaf Level)
Component Groups

Individual components that may be placed within a model and selected within a specification
are defined within a Component Group.

Each object in the hierarchy has associated information, which is then automatically also
associated with any child objects.

Component Property and Table Objects

Component Properties are measurable or descriptive characteristics that are used to fully
describe various components. Height, length, width, diameter and depths are all examples of
properties that may be used to describe a component.
There are three different types of properties: key, dependant and place holders. Key
properties are considered to be independent properties and are used to determine other
component dimensions. For example, the nominal pipe size of ANSI Piping components
does not rely on any other characteristic of the component. Key property values are also
referred to as Sizes.
Dependent properties correspond to key properties. For example, the outside diameter of a
pipe, or the outside diameter of a flange is dependant and corresponds to the nominal pipe
size. Dependent property values are referred to generically as Dimensions.
To reflect the relationship between key and dependant properties, they are displayed in a tree
structure, as shown below.

Key Property
Organizational Folders

Dependent Properties
Place holder properties are characteristics that will change for every single component,
component group and component type. Therefore, these properties will be used to create
place holders for users to enter their own custom dimensions for the characteristic. For
example, the projection of each nozzle is unique and therefore, a reusable table based on
Nominal Pipe Size is not possible.

Key Component Properties must always have an associated table of values, referred to as a
Key Property Table.
Dependent Component Properties may be associated with a table of values, referred to as a
Dependent Property Table. Place Holder Properties cannot have any association with any
tables.
Dependent Property Tables are associated to the Key Property Table, with each value in the
dependent table matching directly up to a key table value. There may be an unlimited
number of dependent tables related to one key property table.

Size assemblies are built from up to four key properties along with a parallel number of key
property tables. For example, reducing branched components such as a reducing tee or a
concentric reducer have two key sizes: a main and a branch nominal pipe size. Therefore, in
the ASME Piping Library, a size assembly named ASME Main and Branch Sizes has been
created by combining two key properties and their tables together.
Each unique set of the key property values is
identified uniquely within the database.

Design System Procedures

Introduction
The Design System module of the Component Designer allows the user to do the following:

Create new mating face types

Define allowable connections within a single design system
Define allowable connections between design systems

Design Procedures
Creating a New Mating Face Type
Mating faces, also known as connection types, may be defined by the user. These custom
connections are stored in individual libraries.

To create a custom connection type...

1. Select the Design System Group object that requires a new mating face.
2. Move to the Mating Face tab in the Data Pane.

Page 44

Design System Procedures

3. Change the Radio button to Custom.

4. Select the Library that will use both the selected Design System Group
and the new mating face type.
5. Select one of the Undefined entries and right-click. Select Define from
the context menu.
6. The Define new Mating Face dialog box appears.

Page 45

Supply a unique Mating Face name and a key word. They Key Word is
used in the Metadata Editor to describe the connection points.
7. Click the Finish button to complete the creation of the new mating
face.
8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 for all other libraries that require the selected
Design System Group and mating face.

Deleting Mating Face Type

Only custom mating faces, or those defined by the user, may be deleted.

To delete a custom connection type...

1. Select the Design System Group object where the mating face to be
deleted resides.
2. Move to the Mating Face tab in the Data Pane.
3. Change the Radio button to Custom.

6. Type in the new name for the custom mating face and hit the
<ENTER> key.

Allowing and Disallowing Connections

PROCAD 3DSMART Modeler checks the mating faces of components when they are
attached together using the connection cones in the model. It is possible to allow or disallow
different connections based on the mating faces.

To create a custom connection type...

1. Decide which mating faces connections you need to allow or disallow.
2. Determine if the mating faces are generic or custom faces.
3. Use the decision making chart to determine which dialog box you need
to move to in order to allow or disallow a connection between the two
mating faces.
