ForWindowsMe,Windows98,andWindowsXP,32MBormoreofrandomaccessmemory(64MBor
morerecommended).ForWindowNTandWindows2000,64MBormoreofrandomaccessmemory.

Aharddiskwithatleast80MBofavailablediskspace(fortheBasesystem).

ACDROMdrive.

Agraphicsadapterwith800x600resolution(SVGA)orhigher.

ForconnectingwithanSPSSServer,anetworkadaptorrunningtheTCP/IPnetworkprotocol.

Youwillalsoneedthefollowinginformation:

Yourserialnumber,whichisincludedonyourCDROMcase.

Yourlicensecode,whichisincludedwithyoursystemonaseparatesheetofpaper.Thisenablesyouto
installtheBasesystemandanySPSSoptionsthatyouhavepurchased.Ifyourlicensenumberisall
zerosorifyoucannotfindit,callyoursalesrepresentative.

Note:YoucannotinstallthesingleuserversionofSPSSonanNToperatingsystemthatusesNTTerminalServer.

Note for Users with Previous Versions of SPSS (version 7.5 or later)
Ifyouhavecustomizedmenusortoolbarsinyoursoftwareandyouwanttokeepyourcustomizedsettings,donot
uninstalltheexistingversionofSPSSbeforeinstallingSPSS.Uninstallingtheexistingversionswillremoveany
recordofyourproductcustomizations.WhenyouinstallSPSS,installovertheexistingversionofSPSS,inthesame
directory.Thiswillpreserveyourcustomizedsettings.

Installing SPSS
ToinstallSPSS,inserttheCDROMintotheCDROMdrive.TheAutoPlayfeaturewillpresentamenu.Torunthe
Setupprogram,chooseInstallSPSS,andthenfollowtheinstructionsthatappearonthescreen.
Note:ToinstallSPSSonWindowsNTorWindows2000,youmustbeloggedontoyourcomputerwith
administratorprivileges.

Invoking the Setup Program Manually:

IntheRundialogbox,typed:\setup.(IfyouarentusingtheDdrive,entertheappropriatedrivelocation.)

Thenfollowtheinstructionsthatappearonthescreen.

Setup Type
Typical.ATypicalinstallationincludesthesampledatafiles,helpfiles,TableLooks,andtheStatisticsCoach.
Thisdoesnotincludeversionsofthesyntaxreferencemanualsinelectronic(PDF)form.
TheStatisticsCoachrequiresInternetExplorerversion4orhigher.IfyoudonthaveInternetExplorer,an
installableversionofInternetExplorer6isavailableonthisCD.
IfyoudontwanttoinstallInternetExplorer,youshouldusetheCustominstallationanddeselecttheStatistics
Coach.
Compact.ACompactinstallationincludesonlytheminimumsetoffilesnecessarytorunSPSS.
Custom.ACustominstallationallowsyoutospecifywhichcomponentsareinstalled.Ifyouwanttoinstall
electronic(PDF)versionsofthesyntaxreferencemanualsonyourharddrive,youneedtochoosetheCustom
option.
Custom Installation
Sample Data.Sampledatafiles,includingfilesusedtocreatemanyoftheexamplesthatappearinthemanuals.
Basic Scripting.InstallsSaxBasic,severalsamplescripts,andthefilesnecessarytouseOLEAutomationwith
thissoftware.
Production Mode Facility.TheProductionFacilityprovidestheabilitytorunthissoftwareinanautomated
fashion.Theprogramrunsunattendedandterminatesafterexecutingthelastcommand,soyoucanperformother
taskswhileitruns.Productionmodeisusefulifyouoftenrunthesamesetoftimeconsuminganalyses,suchas
weeklyreports.
Statistics Coach.TheStatisticsCoachisaninteractive,wizardlike'advisor'designedtohelpyouchoosethe
typeofstatisticalanalysisordisplaytousewithyourdata.TheStatisticsCoachasksyouaseriesofquestionsabout
thekindofdatayouhaveandwhatyouwanttodowithit,showingyouanillustratedexampleofeachoption.When
you'vedecidedwhatyouwant,youcanopentheappropriatedialogboxfromwithintheStatisticalCoachitself.The
StatisticsCoachrequiresInternetExplorer4orhigher.AninstallableversionofInternetExplorer6isavailableon
thisCD.
Syntax Guides.AnAdobeAcrobatversionoftheSyntaxReferenceGuideisincludedwiththeCDROM
versionofthissoftware,providingcomprehensiveonlineinstructionsforusingthecommandlanguage.Ifyou
selectthisoption,SetupwillinstalltheSyntaxGuideonyourharddisk.IfyouchoosenottoinstalltheSyntax
Guide,youcanstillrunitdirectlyfromtheCDROM.

Installing Acrobat Reader

TheelectronicversionoftheSyntaxReferenceGuiderequiresAcrobatReaderversion3orhigher.Someproduct
brochuresontheCDrequireAcrobatReader4orhigher.IfyoudontalreadyhaveAcrobatReader,thesetup
procedurewilloffertoruntheAcrobatReadersetupprogram.

Updating or Modifying Your Installation

ToaddorremoveacomponentoranSPSSoption,runsetup.exefromyourCDROM.Selectanynewcomponents
oroptionsthatyouwanttoinclude.Makesurethateveryoptionyouwanttoincludeisselected,includingany
previouslyinstalledcomponents.IfyouareaddinganSPSSoption,youmayneedtoenteryournewlicensecode,
althoughitwillnotbenecessarytoenteryouroldlicensenumber(s)again.
Toremoveacomponentoranoption,runsetup.exe.Whenyoureachthedialogboxassociatedwiththeitemyou
wanttoremove,deselectthatitem.Makesurethateveryoptionyouwanttoincludeisselected,includingany
previouslyinstalledcomponents.PleasenotethatthisisnotaneffectivewaytouninstallSPSS.(Seethe
"UninstallingSPSS"sectionforinformationonuninstallingSPSS.)

Renewing Your License

IfyouhaverenewedyourlicensefortheBaseSystemoranySPSSoption,youcanupdateitwithoutgoingthrough
theentireinstallationprocessbyrunninglicrenew.exe.Torunthisutility:

OpenanMSDOSwindow.

GototheSPSSdirectory.

Typelicrenew.exe.

Uninstalling SPSS

FromtheStartmenuchoose:

Settings

FromtheControlPanel,chooseAdd/Remove Programs.

ClicktheInstall/Uninstalltab,andchooseSPSS for Windowsfromthelist.

Running Multiple Versions of SPSS

YoucaninstallandrunmultipleversionsofSPSSonthesamecomputerforversions7.5.2andlater.
Note:AlthoughyoucanrunmultipleinstancesofSPSSsimultaneouslyandyoucaninstallmultipleversionsof
SPSSonthesamecomputer,youshouldnotrunmultipleversionsofSPSS(e.g.,SPSS10andSPSS9)
simultaneously.

Installing Database Drivers

TheDatabaseWizardusesdatasourcestoretrievedatafromdatabases.Youcanreaddatafromanydatabaseformat
forwhichyouhaveaninstalleddriver.
Before you install.Ifyouwanttoretrievedatafromdatabasesinanetworkenvironment(localareaorwide
areanetwork),contactyourSPSSsystemadministratorforinformationabouthowtoconfigureyourdesktop
computerwithdatasources.Ifthereisnosystemadministratoratyoursiteyoucaninstallandconfiguredata
sourcesyourself.InstallableversionsofdatabasedriversfromSPSSandMicrosoftareavailableontheCD.We
recommendthatyouusetheSPSSdriversunlessyouneedadriverforMicrosoftAccess.

To Install the SPSS Data Access Pack ODBC Drivers

InserttheSPSSforWindowsCDROMintotheCDROMdrive.

ChooseInstall SPSS Data Access Pack fromtheAutoplaymenu,andthenfollowtheinstructionsthat

appearonthescreen.

SeeSPSSDataAccessPackInstallationInstructionsontheproductCDROMforcompleteinstructions.

To Install the Microsoft Database Drivers (Microsoft Data Access Pack)

InserttheSPSSforWindowsCDROMintotheCDROMdrive.

ChooseBrowsetheCDROMfromtheAutoplaymenu.

DoubleclicktheMicrosoft Data Access Packfolder.

DoubleclickMicrosoft Data Access Pack.exe

ClickYestoinstalltheMicrosoftDataAccessPack.

Troubleshooting SVGA Resolution Problems

IfthesetupprogramfailswithamessagethattheapplicationrequiresSVGAdisplayresolutionorhigher,youcan
correcttheproblembyfollowingthestepsinthissection.Youcan:

Change the display settings on the computer. Thisistherecommendedsolutionif

yourcomputersupportsan800by600orhigherresolutionsetting.

Override the display requirements of the application.Usethissolutionifyour

computerdoesnotsupportan800by600orhigherresolutionsetting.Notethatthissolutionwillcause
displayproblemswhenyouviewcertainInteractiveGraphicsdialogboxes.

Changing your display settings.UsetheWindowsControlPaneltochangeyourdisplayproperties.The

applicationisdesignedtorunwithatleastan800by600pixelsdisplaysetting.

FromtheStartmenu,chooseSettings,thenControl Panel.

ChooseDisplayandclicktheSettingstab.

IntheAreagroup,dragtheslidertotheright,atleastasfarasthe800 by 600setting.

ClickOK.

Rerunthesetupprogram.

Overriding the display requirements.Ifyoudonotwanttochangeyourdisplaysettings,youcan

preventthesetupprogramfromfailingwiththefollowingsteps.

FromtheStartmenu,chooseRun.

IntheRundialogbox,typed:\setup -NOENVFAIL.(IfyouarentusingtheDdrive,entertheappropriate
CDROMdrivelocation.Putaspacebeforethe-NOENVFAILswitchandusecapitalletters.)

Thenfollowtheinstructionsthatappearonthescreen.

Note:ManyfeaturesinSPSSaredesignedfor800by600resolutionorhigher.Somedialogboxescannotbe
displayedcompletelyatlowerresolutions,andmanyonlineHelpfeaturesareoptimizedfor800by600resolutionor
higher.
